December 14, 201212 yr This would definitely update it, but I guess I haven't paid enough attention to notice the subforum titles. I just know which forums to go to look at the topics I want to. But I guess since I look at it every day I have that knowledge. If I was a new user, I would probably be a little lost with some of the topics. But the Mods know what they are doing and they are very busy, so I will leave them in control. Thanks for the suggestions though. That does seem to smooth things over a bit.
July 19, 201311 yr Author It's been almost a year since I made the last post, and nothing has happened yet. Did we just forget? Ok, so opting against an all-encompassing "Disney" in favor of discrete mentions of "Cars," "Toy Story" and "Prince of Persia" (on the grounds that each is likely either a long-lived theme, one based on a particularly acclaimed and beloved franchise, or a particularly fruitful theme as far as LEGO parts and sets go), and selecting a variety of the most current and/or popular themes, a proposal: "Cars, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, Prince of Persia, Spongebob Squarepants, Superheroes, Toy Story and more" - how does that sound to you folks? This is still my choice for forum description, but other possibilities are good, too. If nothing else, though, could we please at least change "Toy Story 3" to "Toy Story" (since the LEGO theme covered the series in general) and "Spiderman" to "Spider-Man" (since that's the correct spelling... although if "Spiderman" is changed at all, it might as well be to "Superheroes," so that it covers everything from both Marvel and DC)? It's now been fully a year and a half since I started this thread, and the forum descriptor is unchanged - still no particular order to the list, still the weird emphasis on Toy Story 3 instead of the overall series, still the misspelling of "Spider-Man," and all. I know the descriptions do get changed every once in a while; is there something going on with this forum that prevents it from getting a better description for now? (Actually, I have been wondering about that forum lately, but the thing I was going to ask really deserves its own thread rather than going here...).
December 9, 201410 yr Author It's now been close to three years since I started this thread, and there's still been no action on it. I wouldn't bother bringing it up, were it not for not merely the description but the actual forum name of LEGO Action Themes having been recently changed to LEGO Action and Adventure Themes. If an actual forum title can be changed so quickly, just to provide a slightly more fitting title to accommodate a single new theme, then surely the nearly three years of careful consideration the mods have put in on the description for LEGO Licensed must be about to pay off in a big way... right? ;) *ahem* So, anyway... how about, "Disney Princesses, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, SpongeBob Squarepants, Superheroes, Toy Story, and more"? It's relatively short, and hits what I think are the high points, for these reasons: Disney Princesses - a broad licensed theme that actually encompasses several different fictional universes under one broad licensing banner; also likely a long-running theme as it already has a substantial catalog upon which to draw with additional material regularly in production, and addressing a distinct market niche Harry Potter - the second-biggest licensed theme ever as of the end of its run, with well over half a hundred sets released over roughly a decade (off and on again); a popular theme based on a well-regarded and beloved franchise; some likelihood of theme resurrection with forthcoming "Fantastic Beasts" films added to franchise Indiana Jones - one of the larger and more successful licensed themes, with four waves of sets covering four movies, plus lots of ancillary stuff (videogames, etc.); likely to return whenever the franchise is either continued or rebooted SpongeBob Squarepants - one of the longest-running licensed themes Superheroes - likely to emerge as one of the biggest licensed themes ever, with essentially limitless potential; broadly encompasses two major subthemes, Marvel and DC (which in turn encompass / supplant / expand upon previous Spider-Man and Batman themes); highly popular Toy Story - mid-sized, fairly substantial licensed theme (two waves of boxed "System" sets, plus various promo polybags, plus a line of DUPLO sets); based upon particularly acclaimed and beloved franchise; likely to return with forthcoming Toy Story 4; personal favorite of forum regulator ;) So, that's my current proposal - "Disney Princesses, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, SpongeBob Squarepants, Superheroes, Toy Story, and more". I'm tempted to add Minecraft, which I think belongs here and which I think may prove to be one of the more substantial licensed themes, having already gone from a single CUUSOO micro-world set to a whole series of such micro-worlds, and then expanding into minifigure scale sets, as well as being based upon source material uniquely synergistic with LEGO. The only reason I haven't is that for whatever reason, all the Minecraft discussion seems to be elsewhere, and the mods appear as unperturbed by this as by the woeful inadequacy of the LEGO Licensed forum description. But anyway... So, what do you all think? Edited December 9, 201410 yr by Blondie-Wan
December 9, 201410 yr Author I'd avoid saying "Disney," since it encompasses licensed themes that don't go here (Pirates of the Caribbean and, now, Star Wars), and because it's too broad - it could cover Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Pirates of the Caribbean, Toy Story, Cars & Planes, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, The Lone Ranger, Mickey Mouse & Friends, Peter Pan / Jake & the Pirates, Winnie the Pooh, the Marvel Comics Universe (and adaptations / offshoots thereof), and Disney Princesses (which itself encompasses Brave, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, The Princess and the Frog, Tangled, and Frozen), all of which have been / will be LEGO sets and themes. If we listed it with any of those it'd be redundant, and if we listed it without them, people wouldn't know where to look for some of those.
December 9, 201410 yr Author There isn't room in the description for the name of everything that goes in this forum, so I'd argue it should hit the high points. Alternately, it could show just whatever licensed themes are current (so, for example, right now we could have The Simpsons, Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, The Big Bang Theory and / or Jurassic Park instead of Harry Potter, Indiana Jones or Toy Story. However, that would mean constantly changing the description to keep up with every theme discontinuation, every single-wave thing like Speed Racer or one-and-done set like Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, and I'm sure nobody wants to change it that frequently. I think it's better to use the "major" licensed themes. Perhaps, if The Simpsons and / or Jurassic Park stick(s) around a while and / or produces a lot of material, adding them to the description would be a good idea. I think we'd need a little more for either of those themes than what we currently have or know we're getting, though.
December 10, 201410 yr Actually, I think at this point the description should just be: Movies, TV shows, and video games that have been recreated in official LEGO sets (excluding Star Wars, Pirates of the Carribean, and Lord of the Rings) ...or something like that.
December 11, 201410 yr Actually, I think at this point the description should just be: Movies, TV shows, and video games that have been recreated in official LEGO sets (excluding Star Wars, Pirates of the Carribean, and Lord of the Rings) ...or something like that. Not sure if you're joking, but that's actually very accurate. Let's face it, at the rate at which Lego releases new licensed themes nowadays, it's hard to keep up with what's current or popular, so even if the description does finally get updated, it will be obsolete again in a few months or at least years. And who knows how long it would then take to get it updated again. So yeah, I'd say the new description should be something along the lines of "Disney, Harry Potter, Super Heroes, Nickelodeon, and other themes based on movies, TV shows, and videogames." It may be very vague, but this way it would be broad enough so it can be kept for a long time. I don't have a problem with saying Disney because the only two exceptions are SW and PotC and it's pretty clear by the descriptions of the other forums that those don't belong in Licensed. Honestly, anything would be better than the current description at this point, so whatever the admins decide on, I just hope they change it soon. Pretty please!
December 13, 201410 yr "LEGO Licensed: All Speed Racer, all the time" Well, at least that would be humorous. I'd prefer that over a bunch of random specific themes, so I'm sticking to my statement. (But obviously that's not the ideal description.)
December 14, 201410 yr How about: All LEGO based on real franchises. Included but not limited to Superheroes, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter. If there isn't one have a pinned thread showing what themes are welcomed topost about in the licensed sub-forum.
