First of all I'd like to say hello to all the forum members and express my deepest congratulations for the incredible accomplishments that can be witnessed among these pages. You have all been of great inspiration for me!

I have been lurking around these pages for some time, and now I felt it was my time to try to contribute. (Please observe: "try" is a keyword here...)

A little bit of history.

I was a huge LEGO fan during my whole childhood (35 now... ) but it was a long time ago me and my brother got our last LEGO at Christmas: the (at the time at least) incredible 8865 Test Car. Moving very fast forward, one and a half years ago, almost out of the blue (I had been chatting with a friend of mine about this amazing new LEGO set and she overheard us), my wife bought to me the 8258 Crane Truck. Well, never having build stud-less and not having touched LEGO bricks for many year, the build was a great challenge. And a new learning of building techniques...Not many months later, in our usual store they happened to display a limited number of 8043 Excavators at almost 50% off. What should I have done? I bought it!!! :pir-tongue:

And little by little, the LEGO bug had me on the hook! But since last time, now I had MY money and no parents to ask permission to. And my wife's got to be the best in the whole world. In her recent trip to the USA I asked her to keep an eye on possible sales of the 8110 Unimog. It ended up with her coming home with the 8110+8052+8109. The was a 3x2 sale she said! I finally bought the 8049: looked like good pneumatics for the money...

I wish I could show some pictures, but the systems doesn't seem to allow me yet.

I will divide the original post into separate pieces, until I have posted 5 times. So keep up with me, please.

/Kristian

A good way to increase your count is to look at other peoples post and make comments/ask questions etc. Can't wait to see your work

Ok, let's try again with pictures this time...

What I want to do is modify the crane truck into something like this:

But I want to add a 5th single wheel axis in front of the boogie. Also I want it to have a crane and a tow-bar.

So what I have done so far is starting from Han's modifications, I raised the XL motor to free space for a transmission axis to the last axis.

Then I "let me inspire" from the 8285 Tow Truck for the tow bar that you can see here:

Finally a view of the things in becoming:

I'm having a hard time with the 5th axis that I want to be liftable. I don't want to use pneumatics, but the best mechanism I could fit so far is shown here:

It works, but it's far from good. Moreover, I think that fitting a motor there will be a challenge...Any tips here are MORE than welcome!!!

Well, I hope I'll keep you updated with progresses. Please don't hesitate to comment: I feel that I have much to learn!

Update time: I've got good news and bad news.

The good news is that I managed to put together a rather acceptable mechanism for raising and lowering the 3rd axis and also to fit a motor within the frame above it. It works quite ok and compared to the version in the first set of pictures, this one have a much longer vertical stroke.

I hope you can see something in the pictures above...

The bad news is I don't like the end result when I start to put together things. Tow trucks a beefy, compact but powerful. The fifth axis outstretches the vehicle too much I think, and it ends having way too much empty spaces... :hmpf_bad:

I'd better get rid of that fifth axis, don't you think?

Another feature I want to have on this machine is "swinging" fwd outriggers, as you can observe on the picture of the Scania truck I posted previously. That is next on my list of things to tackle. If the result should be pleasing, I'd like to try redoing the cabin as well...
