im currently planning of motorizing a 8070 (i know there is a detailed video how to do so, but that would spoil the challenge ;) )

Since its currently my only of the new studless sets, i will have to buy plenty of parts.

I was pleased that I found the motors, IR remotes and receivers on shop.lego.com to order them one by one, without having to buy a whole set...

I plan to use an XL motor to drive, which i figured tend to "slip" weakly constructed gears due to high torque.

I thought maybe starting it at slower speed with the 8879 remote might be a workaround for some of those problems, and being able to drive slower for maneuvering might be convinient as well.

So the questions: is that possible, did anyone do that already?

I do not have have this set,but what you are hoping to do should work ok.

The fellow who runs The Plastic Brick Blog recently motorized his Lego Technic 8070 Super Car set with a Power Functions XL motor, and provided these eight pictures. I agree that using the 8879 PF Speed Control Remote Controller should help with driving the car.

so the 8879 works fine with the normal IR receivers and XL/M motors, and basically enables the motors to be operated at different speeds?

I found that hard to believe from and "electric" point of view, unless the normal remote has different speed settings as well...

I dont have any IR receiver or remote yet, thats why I am asking, since speculating could end up somewhat expensive ;)

Yes using the speed controller enables you to set/change the speed of any of the motors that are connected to a receiver.

it works with both types of controllers but not as well with the non speed control type. If anyone does attempt to build it I recommend removing the parts that motorize the doors, boot and spoiler to lighten the car then use a taller gear ratio for the drive to make it faster.

so a last question about the speed control remote, do I change the direction of the motor with the "turntables" as well?

or only the speed, and the direction with the small black switch?

if it would be done by the switch, it would make it quite hard to steer with the same remote...

the blocks stop the motors and the turn tables control the direction and speed
