What's the difference between the Technic Turntable TYPE 1 and Technic Turntable TYPE 2?

Here are the pictures:

As you see, they have different color, but aren't different at all.

But i don't see a point in creating other types just for other color of the part.

Well as you can see, one of them has the holes running horizontally, whilst the other has them running vertically

They are the same, just the colour is different a far as I can tell. Type 1 is actually the older version with studs.

I think the only difference is colour, which I think they did to make it easier to differentiate between the two sides... it's possible that some builders might have confused the two sides with the older one as it can sometimes be hard to distinguish between dark grey and black in the instruction booklets, and with some sets (e.g. 8043) the turntable needs to be specifically orientated.

How old do they think we are? i am pretty sure most set builders can distinguish between colors. I have notice recently that the instructions have been getting more and more basic.

Well, to us it does feel a bit of an insult to our intelligence, but most of us are probably reasonably experienced with building Technic sets... but for those very new to Technic, especially if they take the plunge with a set like 8043, I can sort of understand if they accidentally build a section wrong by not paying as much attention to the instructions as they should, particularly if they are younger builders...

And yeah, there has definitely been a noticeable increase in the simplicity of the instructions in modern Technic sets, even as they seem to be as complex as ever... :sceptic:

Perhaps the newer studless one is a bit more smooth to rotate?

Actually the studded ones rotate the most smoothly due to the material used (the usual ABS). Modern studless ones are usually fine, but the one that came in my 8421 some years ago has quite a bit of friction in it.

Why is it that my turntable for 8053 is smoother than my turntable for 6752? And yeah, the turntable for 8421 is pretty stiff, especially the one in 8419.

Sounds like a good theory to me! Dk gray and black CAN be a big problem, heck I've even had problems with tan vs. yellow (in 8043 no less, the three tan axle connectors in the gear box accidentally got yellow)...

It is possible to prise apart the two halves of the turntables and also to "mix and match" types 1 & 2 turntables.

They are only a snap fit.

ie studded bottom male half with studless top female half or vica verca if desired, so you could also mix and match top & bottom colours as well.

That said it can be fitting with a warning: Taking the new mini turntable apart might damage the bricks (at least that's what happened to me when I just pulled them apart).
