I just started LEGO again and i have a fascination for classic space. I own a 40 dollar gift card for amazon.com I was wondering if i should get some small alien conquest sets to build my collection, like 3 7050 Alien Defenders. I was also thinking of getting a space police III set, like 5971 gold heist. Finally, I also found some classic set on amazon for cheap, like the LEGO Exploriens 6854 Alien Fossilizer and the Lego blacktron Sub Orbital Guardian. I was also thinking about getting some small UFO sets. What should I buy?

Also, do you have any building techniques I could use in a space moc? I am just out of my dark ages, so I'm a beginner.

Good to hear you're out of your dark ages. :sweet:

There's actually a pretty wide variety of opinions on what LEGO Space themes are the most worth the money, so it will boil down to what appeals to you. If you can afford it, I would highly recommend the 7066 Earth Defense HQ. It's a great set, and since Alien Conquest is being discontinued this year, it won't be around for very long. You don't have to like Alien Conquest to appreciate 7066.

Space Police III is also worth your time. For $40, the 5984 Lunar Limo is a decent purchase. It's not very "classic", really, but it was still a hit with the AFOLs. Most of the Space Police III sets had a nice consistent level of quality, so it's a good investment.

If you're going for the classic stuff, anything from the 90s is generally gold. Everybody likes M-Tron, Blacktron I and II, Space Police I and II, and Ice Planet 2002. Just about every single set from these themes is available on Ebay for varying prices. Be prepared to bid competitively, though. Discontinued sets are always in high demand.

But of course, I have to reiterate that it all depends on what your tastes are. UFO and Insectoids aren't known as LEGO Space greats, but I know that a handful of people love those themes. Of course, nostalgia has something to do with it too, which affects the perceived value. Here's a link for you:

That might help you catch up on all the LEGO Space you may have missed, and where to buy them. Happy hunting!

Thanks. I think I will go over my budget and get classic space sets, and 7066 Earth Defense HQ. Are there any major building tips or techniques I should know? I plan to build some star fighters, a moon base, and maybe even a SHIP later on.

When you are buying the sets, think about the color scheme you want to go with and pick up some elements you think will be useful in those colors. You might want to pay homage to an existing theme (like I did with IP:2002 and exploriens) or make something entirely new. But bricklink will be your friend when it comes to building your collection

Depends on what you want to build and if you still have your old Lego. I'd go for some small SP3 sets and small AQ sets.

And technique wise I would just look around on the lego community over at Flickr, Brickshelf, and this messageboard. You'll pick up some tips and tricks from that.

Some techniques I just read> SNOT, offsetting etc.

I really like this set:

These space hot rods are really cool. The lunar limo is a similar style and comes with one of the coolest space minifigs:

If you can find a deal on this set, this is my #1 of all time. Lots of fun building/modding this kit:

Nice!

Glad to see you're coming back to the community.

The Alien HQ is a good set, and you'll find that even the LEGO sets today are slightly more advanced than you may have remembered.

As alluded to by others - float around here, and flickr etc and look at some of the stuff that's out there. If there's something cool you've seen that you don't know how the builder did it - ASK! We're all nice and most us would be more than happy to share how we did something :classic:

And don't forget to share it with us here!

Welcome back and welcome to Eurobricks!

I would recommend visiting BrickLink, which is a large online LEGO marketplace that has virtually almost every LEGO related item produced. It is fairly easy to navigate and is a great database, but the best part is the overall selection of sets and parts available for purchase. You will find minifigs, sets and anything else you need.

As for sets, I too loved Classic Space and if you are looking at picking up some of those sets, then BrickLink is great for finding and purchasing those. Galaxy Explorer is probably my favorite set of that line. Some other space themes that I liked were Black-Tron and M-Tron which have some cool sets. And not to mention the two official space monorails produced by LEGO. The recent space themes are getting really good such as Space Police III and Alien Conquest which have some brilliant set designs and minifigs.

Also if you haven't seen them yet, there is the Collectible Minifigure Series. Among them are many sci-fi minifigs, all of them are completely new designs not seen before. You can browse them here. I love using them to compliment existing and past themes.
