SheepEater Posted July 21, 2012 Posted July 21, 2012 Since I won't get mine until quite some time, how does it compare to this little devil of a set from a decade ago, for those of you who own both? Quote
DLuders Posted July 21, 2012 Posted July 21, 2012 @ SheepEater: Without straying too far off-topic, the FAST 8475 RC Buggy is not even the same kind of vehicle as the slow 9398 4x4 CRAWLER: Quote
mostlytechnic Posted July 21, 2012 Posted July 21, 2012 Woo, bought one yesterday at my local Lego store (Columbus, Ohio). Built the chassis (ie all the #1 bags) today and hopefully can finish the body tonight. Did take it for a little drive though - it's slow but powerful. I like it :) Quote

DLuders Posted July 21, 2012 Posted July 21, 2012 Here are some color scheme changes to Lego 9398 4x4 Crawler set. Using the Lego Digital Designer (LDD) .lxf file prepared by P4trickvH and refined by Zblj ( http://www.brickshelf.com/gallery/zblj/LDDparts/9398.lxf ), I could see how new colors would look. The original set's body has Black/Orange/White, and the new color scheme has Black/Yellow/Orange/Blue/White. Either way, the 9398's stickers will provide a transition from the black doors to the white rear quarter panels. Your opinions and recommended changes are welcome. Quote
timslegos Posted July 21, 2012 Posted July 21, 2012 I dont think that the blue and yellow go too nicely with the orange and black, just my opinion though. tim Quote

Technic Gearhead Posted July 21, 2012 Posted July 21, 2012 Those color studies are interesting. I think orange and blue would be nice if there was enough pieces to make it work. I don't think yellow goes very well. Maybe we can have a solid orange one ten years from now - stay tuned! Quote

DLuders Posted July 21, 2012 Posted July 21, 2012 OK, I got rid of the orange parts entirely, and now have a Black/Yellow/Blue/White body shell. Better or worse? I don't want to color panels that don't exist in real life (or which are rare and expensive to buy). I think that the stock 9398 has too much black in it (to perhaps hide scuff marks and scrapes?).... Quote

We need to see all 3 side by side with stickers! But seriously, your actual models will definitely look better then stock once the stickers are applied. And I like the black/yellow a lot, hadn't thought of that option--much more do-able then black/orange! (...oh shoot...need more yellow 1x5x11 panels ) Quote
mostlytechnic Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 Well, finished mine. Great vehicle - totally amazed at what it can drive over. This is Lego, not specialty RC off road vehicles! I did notice that the suspension is a little wobbly - my body tends to lean to one side or the other, even when sitting still. Oh well. And seriously Lego, the B-model? Changing just part (the smaller part!) of the set was bad enough on the 8421 Crane, but at least there you converted it from a crane to a (weirdly out of scale) lift truck. Here, you just change cosmetic stuff. And you show the B-model truck without stickers, but most people will have applied them all over the panels making the main body, so if you decide to try the B-model it'll look lame. A little disappointed there, but I'll get over it. Probably by just never building the alternate body style :) Quote
mostlytechnic Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 Also, loving all the little details they worked in. The way a couple pieces that seemed to have no reason to be there turn into latches for the doors. The use of the 3x3 T parts near the front of the hood to make it line up just right when it closes. etc. However, it would have been nice to have some better cable management in there. There's a ton of slack cords and they tend to get in the way when closing the body down. Quote

z3_2drive Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 just wondering if body of 8081 will fit on 8081 is a mid size vehicle-so no, but you could use the 9398's black panels to try to 'extend' the current dimensions of the 8081 body. Quote

Why not 8081 - it would be a real monster truck. You also can try to mount 9395, cabin from 8110, or 8043 (iam serious) on chassis As for new colors : black, yellow, orange, white and blue with red chassis looks like rainbow. Gay's crawler You,ve better be careful with colouring 9398 , it was born to be brutal and climb any obstacle Edited July 22, 2012 by rm8 Quote
davidmull Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 (edited) 9398 now available in Argos Ireland :) I'll have to wait a week tho for Smyths to get it as I have a voucher :) Price is €167.99 Edited July 22, 2012 by davidmull Quote
DLuders Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 Since rm8 liked the revised color scheme for the 9398 so much , here is another attempt to recolor the set's body shell. I replaced the orange parts with yellow, swapped the tailgate Technic Panel with the roof panel, blackened the rear portion of the rollcage, and added yellow accents to the rear mudguards, cargo bed, and rollcage buttresses. I am attempting to have the yellow "racing stripe" accents carry through the entire model, end-to-end. I believe that The Lego Group intended for the "wild" color scheme of this set to be changed by AFOLs, to make the 9398s unique in appearance. Real rock crawlers often have "loud" colors (to help rescue helicopters find them when they are upside-down in a ravine!). Is this recoloring to your taste? Suggestions? When I receive my 9398 in a few days, I intend to build it with some alternate colors. Quote

Everyone wants to leave the new white panels on. Unless you add more white up front, take them off and use them for another project. I really like the black and yellow... DLuders Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 OK, I "lost" the white and now have a black 9398 with yellow accents. The front racing stripe (on the hood/bonnet) has been extended onto the 1x2 Technic Liftarm. The colors are like the Pittsburgh Steelers NFL (American Football) team, similar to the Lego supercar shown above. I know that the red chassis underneath clashes with the black/yellow, but I'm just trying to change the body shell. Any suggestions? Quote

Hi D I have built mine replacing all the Red chassis parts with Grey or Black, it looks far better and changed any Orange parts for Black. Quote
