July 24, 201212 yr Bought 9398 yesterday. Finished building it tonight. It's not wrong to drive it over your five month old daughter as she lies on her play-mat is it? I drove it over my boys' feet. They're 7 and 2, both thought it was hilarious.
July 24, 201212 yr Okay been playing with this beasty for a day or so now & I have some observations that I would like some of you to confirm or blow away please I bought some of the Ansman RC Tyres that efferman had found fitted these rims well, so I put them on my Crawler, it looks much better with them on but i have noticed something interesting. Due to the larger diameter of the tyres it makes the crawler drive slightly faster and with the softer grippier tyres it can grip better.... but it does not have the same hill climbing power as before obviously due to the gearing effect of the larger tyres. Lego seem to have got a perfect balance between gearing and the size of the tyres/wheels to provide just enough forward speed with plenty of "UMPHH" to climb obsticals whilst giving plenty of fun out of a set of heavy duty AA cells. With the Ansman tyres fitted the hill climb capability is actually reduced slightly and it eats a set of AA Cells much quicker than with the stock Lego tyres fitted. Not sure if it will damage the motors either so I have personally returned back to the lego original tyres and am having much fun finding obstacles to climb in my living room.... my basset hound dog was not impressed when i drove over him earlier. So, in conclusion, if anyone has the Ansman tyres and the 9398 crawler please do some of your own testing and let us know what you think?
July 24, 201212 yr Maybe if you replace the 12/20 reduction at the portal hubs to 8/24 you'll get the speed back to normal while maintaining the Ansmann tyres' grip.
July 24, 201212 yr I agree ill be using the stock tires and not non Lego parts, Lego designed this to run on specific size wheels and I trust them :) Also them after market tires just don't lOok rite I think.

Yes, I have been considering that, I also noticed it could be done at the motors aswell not sure which would be best place to do it, on all four wheel hubs or on 2 motor sections?
July 24, 201212 yr Generally, it is best to make the most reduction as near the wheels as possible to avoid having the low speed/high strain on the rest of the drivetrain. But the Truck Trial specialists should be able to advise better.
July 24, 201212 yr Yes, I have been considering that, I also noticed it could be done at the motors aswell not sure which would be best place to do it, on all four wheel hubs or on 2 motor sections? The closer to the wheels the better as this will prevent the extra torque affecting the rest of the drive train. So yeah, 8:24 in the wheel hubs would be best.

But the Truck Trial specialists should be able to advise better. Okay makes sense... The closer to the wheels the better as this will prevent the extra torque affecting the rest of the drive train. So yeah, 8:24 in the wheel hubs would be best. Sounds like a plan

So yeah, 8:24 in the wheel hubs would be best.My crawler comes friday and I will do 8/24 in hubs, but also replace 20t/diff with 12t/20t-sariel's mods didnt seem to have enough torque for me, but if it's too slow, I'll just redo it.And nice red truck, I made a black and lime accents for fun, and it looks great Edited July 24, 201212 yr by z3_2drive
July 25, 201212 yr I'm waiting for my 9398 I already ordered it and it will arrive sometime next week, because the set is availabe here since july 30th. I also ordered the bigger Ansmann tires (see pictures in rodeown's post one page 50) and the tires will arrive tomorrow.
July 25, 201212 yr Where did you order the Asmann tiers from, and do you think they will ship to Norway?
July 25, 201212 yr in this thread you find every information what you need to order some crawler tires Edited July 25, 201212 yr by efferman
July 25, 201212 yr I went to the local RC/model shop and the could order the tires for me. I had the data of those tires with me, got them out of the 3rd party tires thread.
July 26, 201212 yr @ vwpint: The Lego 44772 wheels are used on both the 9398 4x4 Crawler and the 8297 Off-Roader II. The Lego 54120 "Tires 94.8 x 44R Balloon" are the same for both sets too. There is no tire-to-wheel slipping problem with using 3rd-party, RC-type 1.9" (48mm Inside Diameter) tires on the Lego 44772 wheels, since the 3rd-party tires' rubber is VERY SOFT and GRIPPY. One does not need to use CA adhesive (Superglue), because the fit is nice and tight. As efferman indicated, see the Eurobricks topic on "Third Party Tires for Lego Technic Rims" to see many pictures of various tires. Any 1.9" (48mm) RC tire that is 37mm-48mm wide will fit just fine on the Lego 44772 wheel.
July 26, 201212 yr Still dont understand(bad english), just say do they slip or not??? No, they do not slip.
