Crtlego Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 Way too slow. I've discussed this a little over a technicbricks so appologies if i'm beginning to bore anyone . If you have read technic bricks feel free to skip this post! In summary, right now we have a choice between a slow as hell motor with the gearing down done for you and an even slower motor with even more gearing down for you. I've been bored of that since 1997. The L motor now gives us more of the same regaurdless of torque. I was hoping for an ungeared motor, tho I guessed from the gearing of the crawler that it was gonna be yet another geared one. Don't care that it's space saving. Don't like that it's easier. I want speed and and noise!!! Sets like the bulldozer from 2007 and 8043 would have been far more interesting (to me at least) and epic if you had to do all that gearing down yourself. Sets like 8064 (with its awesome gear trains) would have been really boring with an m-motor. Gear trains consisting of a few dozen 16t gears are just really boring to me now. Better performance maybe, but if I wanted preassembled geartrains and great performance then I would would be far better off buying something not made by lego. or spell names correctly In my experience, I don't think many of the current technic parts can handle such high rpm's. Already, some parts have trouble when used in conjunction with the Black RC Buggy Motors.. (this obviously depends on how they are used..) Maybe its the torque and not the speed but there are limits to the pressure most pieces can be put under. Personally, I like the new L-Motor because not only does it give us more torque for the same speed but it's design allows it to be attached in many different places -I find this just as -if not more- important as the torque and speed of the motor.. But we all have our preferences and opinions.. Quote
Stevee Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 Just my two cents about the L-Motor when i saw it today: Same speed as the M-motor, more power but not much larger, many holes to fit (wich is a great advantage imho) and less noise, a very smooth sound. Btw we tested two other motors too: With the old 4x5 the little Sticker on the tire for the Laser of the tachometer flew away - but first it took seconds to reach the max rpm Quote
AVCampos Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 Wow, that cutaway image of the Crawler's chassis is... epic. And, Alasdair, you forgot a 2x4 electric plate there. Quote
Stevee Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 (edited) ^ Thanks for doing these tests. Your welcome :) Tbh it was great fun and very interesting ;) Take care, stevee Edited June 27, 2012 by Stevee Quote
matias bendtsen Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 did they change the tyre to take more weight, looks like there are some reinforcements inside? Quote
davidmull Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 This is turning into an other parts tread, who cares how fast the motor goes, all we want in model info and I'm still eager to see how capable this is at climbing obstacle s :) Quote
Meatman Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 I see Blakbird has a picture review up at Brickshelf. I guess one made it here in the states. Quote
Zerobricks Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 I remember something about Lego telling they are making new tyres simillar to 8297 ones some months ago when someone aneted to roder those... They do look differently from inside, hope the rubber is softer, CAN SOMEONE PLEASE COMPARE TO 8297 ONES? Quote
timslegos Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 Why so many people with the set and so little information. Do the tires have the same part number? tim Quote
freakwave Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 I see Blakbird has a picture review up at Brickshelf. I guess one made it here in the states. From what Blakbird has posted, the IR Receiver has a very prominent "V2" marking. Looking forward to the IR-Specs for that... The latest one I can find around the net is V1.2, anybody V2? Thanks Quote
Crtlego Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 (edited) Thanks Stevee for the speed testing! we have a vid from the underside Great video. The servo seems to be very responsive -which is good. And the L-motors perform well.. and those PP wheels fit well too. What a combination we have here! did they change the tyre to take more weight, looks like there are some reinforcements inside? It would seem so.. Nice eye. Now I have to buy 8 of those too (I wish..) I see Blakbird has a picture review up at Brickshelf. I guess one made it here in the states. Totally jealous.. and nice review Blakbird!! Its great to see all those new pieces and the build process! and it looks good standing next to the Offroaders, Grazi's Big Foot, and Nathanael's Hurricane! Now if only I could get one standing next to me.. From what Blakbird has posted, the IR Receiver has a very prominent "V2" marking. Looking forward to the IR-Specs for that... The latest one I can find around the net is V1.2, anybody V2? Thanks It might be a sticker he put on himself to differentiate between other receivers? It would be nice if Lego did it though.. I tried my best, The Mind did also. Travelled some hundred kilometers to check some details together while you guys waiting for the important answers and vids. Yepp, you are right - we failed. Shame on me - but i learned: Whenever i´ll be the first to get an important lego set everybodys waiting for: Gonna rent a Van, will put my lego stuff in it, travel to a small island and check it by my self and never tell anybody about it... ;) Mate, we all got a job, a family, ways to travel to check things and so on and so on... Can´t speak for all of the Ladies and Gentlemen of Doktor Brick but i like to point out: Seems to be, some of us had the first sets. Proudly postet it and where ready to check the main questions - in this case about the servo. Answered first questions so fast, within minutes. Second issue was the new motor... Tonight i typed a lot with efferman. Not about the crawler. Imho about a much more important issue: a young guy, who´s doing amazing things with lego but maybe he does not have enough bricks for the "big stuff" he is dreaming about. How can we help him to get that young man (very friendly guy btw) motivated? We don´t know him really, we don´t know his parents and the circumstances and so on - but: I like to help every kid who is so creative and motivated in Lego - better than see them buying crack at the bus-station. Sorry for beeing pathetic, but maybe this explains a little bit: The very small german AFOL community (Moreless 40 active members) of "Doktor Brick" stands for taking care about each other in a nice way, and have fun with those little bricks. No matter if somebody is creating nice stuff, collecting or Technic. No matter about "Who got the most". So i have got to apologize, i was not able to deliver perfect Vids within hours, perfect three point lighting while a crawler climbs Pretzels, whatever :( But i like the way The Mind was ready when i told him: some guys at Eurobricks asked me questions: "No Problem mate, come over and lets see what we can do!" spirit... no more words to say ;o) Edited June 27, 2012 by Stevee Quote
DLuders Posted June 27, 2012 Posted June 27, 2012 @ Stevee: You, The Mind, GBCPeter, and efferman have been most generous of your time and effort to tell the world about the new 9398 set. Forgive us for being impatient. In an ideal world, The Lego Group itself would be providing details about THEIR PRODUCT that they sold. We are envious that you got the set, but realize that it is awkward to have to answer numerous quetions from around the world, via different languages. We THANK YOU for your work! Quote

I'm a collector so waiting for new parts or motor speeds do not interest me and this topic is about the crawler after all not the parts. I just like to know some of the main features of any new model, there's lots of info since yesterday thanks too u but not one person commented on the main or only feature of this model and that's HOW IT DRIVEs as a crawler! Thanks again stevee for all ur info tho so far :) Quote

Stevee Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 thx gentlemen - keeps my head up. You know, sometimes it not so easy. Today i had so many good and also bad news in my life. Walked out of my office rooms, thought: Lets go to The Mind and get the brain free, no chance to do anything for today. So concentrate on your hobby-mates all over the world. They are waiting for answers... will be fun to meet The Mind. A bitch rammed into my tiny little Porsche, she had to give me way but i had luck, only some scratches - but you´ll never know if there is serious damage at suspension system or whatever. Had to change to my "winter car" and realized: got to fill up some fuel, 10 minutes more and still 100 Kilometers - The Mind (never saw him before) is waiting. When i entered the Autobahn, i felt: even in a BMW - winter-tires in june, ratteling car was not be moved since four months: DANGER! No 240km/h, better 160km/h -.- I was three minutes late, took me some time to find his office cuz they are doing some rebuilding things there and was lucky to see him. He is a very friendly guy, was glad to meet him. Well, don´t get me wrong please. Another day in paradise with some trouble. Will not complain, never! Hope you are cool with the stuff we found out and thank you very mutch for your comprehension ;) Quote
DLuders Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 @ Stevee: Sorry to hear about your trouble on the way to see The Mind. Again, we thank you for your efforts. When the sun rises there in beautiful Germany, you can look forward to a better day! Quote

Cheers mate but it was not real trouble - it was kind of John Wayne speakin: A man has got to do what a man has got to do ;) And every day i wake up and i´m not in hospital with a box by my side with a "jump cable" is a good day ;) Sun rises every day - if there are some clouds and i can´t see the sun: I know she is there and likes to shine on me - i like her ;) Quote
