Conchas Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 I remember something about Lego telling they are making new tyres simillar to 8297 ones some months ago when someone aneted to roder those... They do look differently from inside, hope the rubber is softer, CAN SOMEONE PLEASE COMPARE TO 8297 ONES? The tires are not reinforced on the inner side. They are identical to the previous models. Yes there is a V2 sign printed on the IR Receiver. Quote
DLuders Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 (edited) Here is a made by Fernando Correia (Conchas) during last night's LIVE build of the 9398 4x4 Crawler set on TechnicBRICKS. The end shows the completed model rolling around on his desk; use the video's slider bar to see when he does that (roughly at the 1:11:00 to 1:14:00 point): Edited June 29, 2012 by DLuders Quote
davidmull Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 Great video thanks luder,it really does perform fairly well I think :) Quote

Can you test new crawler with old IR receiver? Just wanna know what is the difference: control/signal system or just increased amperage? May be it will be possible to use v2 IR receiver with RC buggy motors with better perfomance than v1..?! Quote

It seems obvious the new reciever works way better as it still picked up the signal even when the crawler was upside down. Quote
DLuders Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 (edited) A YouTube video of the new Lego Technic 9398 4x4 Crawler operating OUTDOORS to demonstrate: 1) It's offroad crawling/climbing abilities in uneven terrain. 2) The power of the new Power Functions L-motors. 3) The (possibly improved) infrared reception capabilities of the V2 Power Functions Receiver. efferman Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 (edited) i have ordered one 9398. when i have built it, i will test it on my crawling track, which i have used in my videos. and i will compare what is possible with my crawler tires and the tires with the old and new part number. we will see if there is a difference on the trail. Jetro Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 3) The (possibly improved) infrared reception capabilities of the V2 Power Functions Receiver. I very much doubt the V2 IR-Receiver has a better reception that the previous version. Reception depends largely on the strength of the signal (hence the "bad" results with the HiTechnic IR-Link sensor which broadcasts a very weak signal and so needs to be placed very near the receiver to work). I've had the very same bad reception with the new receiver as with the old one when using it in a room with fluorescent lighting or with big windows. I also doubt (but this needs to be confirmed - I'll ask and let you know when I get a response) that this receiver is in fact different from the latest ones we've had (including the ones from 2 years ago). Some time ago LEGO announced they had updated the receiver chip and I remember the only way to distinguish an "old" receiver from a "new" one was to check the blinking of the led at power up. The receiver that comes with this set also does the blink at power up. I strongly suspect LEGO has simply decided to mark this very same 2nd generation receiver V2. This might indicate that at some point in the not too distant future they may actually start using the function that didn't work on the first version... Quote
davidmull Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 I think ur wrong jetro, in the video concas made it clearly showed the new one picks up the remote even upside down. Quote
AVCampos Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 That's not surprising even for the old receiver: I remember from numerous TechBall matches that the receivers work even when obstructed by parts of the models, or when the transmitters aren't directly pointing at them. At least as long as the batteries on the transmitter are well charged. Quote
Jetro Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 I think ur wrong jetro, in the video concas made it clearly showed the new one picks up the remote even upside down. I'm afraid not. Fernando tested his at night in a relatively small space with what appears to be walls that reflect the IR signal well. I tested mine during the day, in a large office with big windows and fluorescent lighting and got no response when the Crawler was upside down. Quote

DLuders Posted June 30, 2012 Posted June 30, 2012 There are several more 9398 4x4 Crawler sets available now in Germany. Quote
daniele Posted June 30, 2012 Posted June 30, 2012 u can get it chaeper at this shop How it's possible if the release date is August? D. Quote
DLuders Posted June 30, 2012 Posted June 30, 2012 On this Eurobricks post, it was noted that The LEGO Shop in Oberhausen, Germany sold the 9398 4x4 Crawler set "early", and a few others in Germany are reselling it. It appears that since The Lego Group realized that the set was "out", they arranged for a near-simultaneous set of reviews by Conchas, Blakbird, and Anio. The supply chain of 9398s has not been filled worldwide, so the set will become generally available in early August (first in Europe, then westward across the globe). Quote

Reviews were agreed to be released simultaneously by the end of July. Once the sets were found selling at Oberhausen much earlier we got clearance to show them immediately. On my side I've been preparing the review in "slow cooking" mode (as Jetro called it), trying show all at once... :P So far I've taken hundreds of photos and tenths of small videos (should take some outdoors tomorrow). Now I'm in the process of selecting the best photos and the videos taken so far to compose the material for the review. Meanwhile, tomorrow morning you will have the interview about the PF elements, in the usual place. Quote
Jetro Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 Ah I see,u have the crawler so? What's ur opinion on the crawler? It's hard to give an opinion in just a few words, but I'm quite excited about the set. I'm not particularly charmed by the colour scheme, but the power of the L-motors and possibilities of the proportional servo motor are very interesting. The design is very sturdy and it's a great set. You'll be able to read a more complete assessment in HispaBrick Magazine 014 in about a month. Quote
daniele Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 I prefer the model B. Am I the only one here with this preference?? :D Quote
nicjasno Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 The crawler has the same sucky steering geometry as the unimog with even bigger tires. I am so dissapointed. :( Quote
daniele Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 this 4x4 has 4 wheels steering. I think it's good enough :) Quote
allanp Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 The crawler has the same sucky steering geometry as the unimog with even bigger tires. I am so dissapointed. :( I think the tyres are the same size aren't they? But yeah, I agree. Despite my ranting on about the way too slow L-motor (should have left out the internal gearing or spent the money developing stronger/larger/frictionless CV joints for better steering geometry) overall i'm very happy with the other new parts. I will be buying some servos (which are awesome) and some V2 recievers. It's slightly worrying that they have gone more for playability (knowing they can't compete playability or performance wise with much cheaper rival RC toys) with this set rather than mechanicle realism (something technic can do better than anything). Now we have a set that is vastly mechanicly unrealistic and does not perform as well as much cheaper RC toys which can also be used outdoors, so I can't really see the point of paying it's high price tag. However I remain very grateful for the new servos and, tho they are expensive, i'll be buying many of them. Quote
DLuders Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 (edited) From The Scooter Guy's Flickr photostream, there are these images showing how the "flip-up" body shell can be easily removed and replaced with your own (custom) body shell. This is similar to the Lexan body shells that are sold for RC Monster Trucks -- you can easily change the "look" of your model by simply exchanging the shell: Edited July 1, 2012 by DLuders Quote
