As tempting as it is to simply echo the recommendation of using "a big honking rocket" as the town's center -- and DrNightmare is right, everyone does love rockets -- can I ask how large of a town you're thinking of creating?

If the town is going to be of a substantial size, developing a park (complete with fountains, flowers, statues, etc.) could be a really nice way to draw the viewer's eyes right to the center of town. For ideas, I'd recommend you do a simple internet search for the re-creation of the Beijing Olympics that a group in Hong Kong (I think it was Hong Kong, I could be mis-remembering) put together. In addition to the stadiums and arenas, they created a lovely park with a fun little fountain and lots of flowers -- something like that might be a nice anchor to your town.

If you're going for something on a smaller scale, maybe a traffic circle with a statue or fountain in the middle would suit your purposes. If you're thinking of doing more of a wintry scene, maybe an ice skating rink would work.

Either that, or a ginormous red star, if you want a more commie feel to it

Or a Fabuland statue. I personally would totally go for the Fabuland critter. It tends to appease the gods, for some reason... You could even give it a vacuum cleaner in one hand, that would totally look like Freddie breaking free. Et voila, your town will be Montreux number two!

A market place would be nice, too, with stands selling fish, meat, flowers, veggies and fruit.

A park sounds great, but you can also have a park, and a place with an nice looking pavement pattern, a monument in its middle and a few souvenir sellers.

The difficulty now, will be to choose from all these ideas! :sweet:

 But then you'd need a lake in front of it, oriented such that you can make beautiful photos at sunset ;)

(But leave out this... frying-pan-shaped not-really-a-dock thing on the left.)

Well, another idea would be a big old tree – which is what I'll probably put on the square in front of my town hall, with a small market around it.

Well in that case, might as well ditch the whole LEGO town idea and just put a Fabuland fig with a vacuum cleaner in one hand pretending to be Freddy in the center of a lawn. Or forest. It may defy the purpose a bit, but it sure would make for awesome photos

Sorry for steering off-topic Logwyn... At least now you do have a plethora of options to choose from! Just so that we can get back to where you wanted us to be in the first place - personally, I don't think anything big is really needed for the town centre to actually work as such. A nice clean roundabout with some grenery around it, as suggested by Legocrazy81, could be just as nice. In any case, I definitely feel that having plants (and plenty of them) is crucial. Which sort of brings us back to the whole lawn idea

For the centre of my town, I built a Cathedral, with a small cementery around it... just my 2cents...

If I were building, I would also choose a cathedral.

Perhaps the OP could think about what caused the town to develop in the first place. Often they are centered on higher ground, which is easier to defend. Or the bend of a river. An Old West town might be centered around stage coach stop or train station...

I think a clock tower would be cool or an open square with little cafe's along the edge of it. You could even have events, like a traveling circus or Shakespeare festival come and visit your town on occasion.

Alternatively, you could have some sort of glowing space rock that crash landed there and mysteriously draws all your citizens.

A big honking memorial OF a rocket. It could be the next Cape Canaveral!

I agree on the park, or at least a paved town square with a fountain and/or memorial. It should be an open space, to contrast with the buildings in the town itself.

I love your Pshyco-Fabuland ideas  Maybe I'll incorporate that

I'd say go for a paved square of some sort. You can always add as many or as few statues, fountains, etc as you want. I think a square is more versatile than a park plus I always imagine a park to be at the edge of a city centre rather than right in it.

You can always have patches of grass and plants in a quare too.

Cheers
