Adam the Ant Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 Hi everyone. I have just started my final project for 3rd year at uni and I am focusing on Lego. If any of you could answer a few questions it would really help with my research. The first two you don't have to answer, but it would help with categorising the results. 1. Are you male or female? 2. How old are you? 3. How old were you when you got your first Lego set and what was it? 4. What is your favourite theme (past or present) and why? 5. Why do you like Lego? You can be as brief or detailed as you like. If any of you have children that could answer the questions it would help vary the results from different age groups. Thanks in advance. Quote
fyrmedhatt Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 (edited) 1. Male 2. 24 3. 2.5 years old or so, and I believe this could have been the set: 6675 4. My favorite theme right now is probably Star Wars, although as a kid I was really into castle. 5. I simply love the creative nature of the hobby and I have a blast putting the sets together. -zenn Posted February 14, 2012 Posted February 14, 2012 1. Male 2. 27 3. Not counting Duplo, at age 4 I got > 6450. That's the set I most vividly remember getting as a kid. 4. As a kid Town & Space; building my own town with all kinds of vehicles and houses. Nowadays I build mostly Scifi, but I buy different themes for parts. 5. For me it's just to materialise and visualise the idea I got in my head with Lego being the medium. Almost like how a sculpture or architect would do it. Quote
woolie Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 1. Hard to know for sure 2. Cannot be measured with a linear concept of time 3. Records lost to the ages 4. Modular buildings. They remind of me of human cities. 5. Crunchy, good with milk. Quote
LEGO Guy Bri Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 1. Male 2. 24ish 3. 3 or 4; 1638 Basic Blue Bucket 4. Favorite theme has and always will be City and all of it's subthemes. 5. It's a quality product and I love it's endless possibilities and wide range of products to create a thriving city. Quote
Sid Sidious Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 1. Are you male or female? Male 2. How old are you? 16 3. How old were you when you got your first Lego set and what was it? 4 years old. This McDonald's promo was my first set. 4. What is your favourite theme (past or present) and why? Bionicle because I like the extensive storyline, and Monster Fighters and Studio Horror because I really love the classic monsters and sets that go with them. 5. Why do you like Lego? I like that I can build anything I want. It is better than something virtual because I am not limited by the program. I also like that the bricks are really high quality and I don't have to worry about two pieces not fitting together. Minifigures are also really cool. Quote
Vindicare Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 1. Male 2. 30 3. Oh, my memory isn't that good. 4. Modulars. I like the builds and the resulting set(s). Making a detailed street. 5. I like LEGO because it distracts me from the other crap in my life. It keeps me happy. Quote

Hi Adam the ant Have you thought about using something like surveymonkey for this? It's easy to use and makes collation of results much easier. That and some old people here would like to help you out and give full data but don't feel like saying how old they are on a public forum. Not me of course, I'm only 7 years old... (now I'm awaiting my ban for being too young, or maybe I just left a digit off that age figure). Cheers Hewman Edited February 15, 2012 by hewman Quote
travisco_nabisco Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 1. Male 2. 28 3. Around 10 or so, first official set I remember getting either 6425 or 62263 4. Past - Blacktron II Present - Modular Buildings - I love the detailing 5. It is a good creative outlet that doesn't involve sitting in front of a screen and uses fine motor skills. Quote
just2good Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 (edited) 1. Male 2. I was born in 199X. 3. My first set was one of the McDonald promos, and that was a WHILE ago. 4. My favorite theme is either Toy Story, Studios, or Adventurers, as they are all Nostalgic to me. 5. I like LEGO as it was a part of my childhood, and is a great hobby. I found that my true creativity skills show when I play with LEGOs, and some of my best memories include LEGOs. My collection display is a marvel to look at, and is also a great conversation piece. Cheers Hewman You've been on here since you were 3...(or 4, depending on when your birthday is)? You must be some super genius, cause I didn't know how to use a computer or type or many other things associated with a computer at that age. Assuming 7 is your real age and you didn't leave off a digit 1. Male 2. I was born in 199X. 3. My first set was one of the McDonald promos, and that was a WHILE ago. 4. JackJonespaw Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 3. How old were you when you got your first Lego set and what was it? This McDonald's promo was my first set. Wow! That was the earliest set I got, too! 1. Male 2. Sorry, not saying. 3. Can't remember the age, but it was 2025. 4. My favorite is Star Wars, but with LOTR coming, who knows? 5. It's great, imaginative, and there are endless possibilities. Quote
brickmack Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 (edited) 1. Male 2. Prefer not to say. (Not terribly old though) 3. 7658 y wing 4. Space 5. Endless design possibilities, and the only major engineering challenge that I get most days. Edited February 16, 2012 by brickmack Quote
just2good Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 (edited) Toy Story isn't even old enough to be considered nostalgic. I really meant that the movies were nostalgic to me, so I brought the sets to recreate the nostalgic scenes. Sorry, I should of been more specific. Edited February 16, 2012 by just2good Quote
spacefan6901 Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 1) Male 2) 43 (keep down the noise ya whippersnappers!) 3) I was 6 years old, and it was set 540 Swiss Villa 4) I would have to say Space, especially Classic Space when I was a child 5) I was an extremely detail-oriented and procedure-oriented child, and LEGO just seemed to keep me endlessly interested by the possibilities of all the different combinations of parts as I built my visions of moonbases and spaceships. At present it is mostly nostalgia I suppose as I'm only 2 years out of my Dark Age and barely building at all. Quote
brickie Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 1} Male 2} The average age of the population of Australia is 45. I am well, well above average. The good thing is that these days I can get a discount on most purchases. 3} I bought the red train set in my signature for my children 4} It would have to be a tie between castle and train. 5} I love the stuff because we can build what we like from our imaginations. The best part is that whatever we build is correct; there is no 'wrong' when you are building with LEGO. Quote

helikopteros Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 1. Are you male or female? Male 2. How old are you? Thirty-one. 3. How old were you when you got your first Lego set and what was it? Maybe three or four years old. First Legos were hand-me-down toys from an older cousin, first real set I remember getting was the Space monorail when I was six or seven, though I'm sure there must have been something before that. 4. What is your favourite theme (past or present) and why? The Forestmen (from Castle Lego, late 80s-early 90s) 5. Why do you like Lego? I think the one thing that made Lego special for me back was that I could build whatever it was on the cover of the box, but I could always break it down (in pieces, or even entirely) and build something that worked better for what I wanted to do. That was freeing as a child, and I think that's a lot of why I ended up as an AFOL. You can be as brief or detailed as you like. If any of you have children that could answer the questions it would help vary the results from different age groups. Thanks in advance. Quote
Hive Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 1. Are you male or female? Male. 2. How old are you? 29 (for another 3 weeks). 3. How old were you when you got your first Lego set and what was it? Sadly, I do not have the slightest idea. All I know is that it was in the 80's, and that it was most likely a Town set. 4. What is your favourite theme (past or present) and why? Castle, both past and present (with Pirates close second). Why? Probably because I've always been interested in history and (this only applied when I was a kid) there was high potential for conflicts when playing. 5. Why do you like Lego? It let's you create and use your imagination and it carries a great deal of nostalgia because of the countles of hours I spent enjoying LEGOs as a kid. Quote
Lyichir Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 1. Male 2. 20 3. Don't remember exactly, but around four or five (unless you count Duplo, in which case it'd be earlier). 4. Tough question. I'll go with Ninjago. 5. It's a great outlet for my creativity, and fun to boot. I also aspire to be a set designer for The LEGO Group, which based on what I've read is a very good company to work for. Quote
TheLegoDr Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 1. Are you male or female? Male 2. How old are you? just turned 28 not long ago 3. How old were you when you got your first Lego set and what was it? I would assume less than age 5 since I have soooo many of the mid-late 80's sets. 4. What is your favourite theme (past or present) and why? I was always in love with Castle and Pirates growing up. Then the Dark Ages happened and when I returned I came back to the new Castle and Pirates. But now Harry Potter is also an option in the mix. 5. Why do you like Lego? It allows creativity and imagination and you have something to show for it when you are done. I continue to like it because I loved it so much as a kid. I like having that feeling again. Quote
Dakar A Posted February 23, 2012 Posted February 23, 2012 1. Male 2. 3. Not sure the age. Probably 5, but surprising, because I rember getting it! It was set 6477, Fire fighter's lift truck. 4. My favourite theme is town. I like architecture (The actual thing, not the sets{But those are nice, too]), and the ability to make a tiny town! Plus, I've always loved cars and trucks. 5. I like Lego because of the ease of building, the fact that it is colourfull, and other reasons I myself don't know. I do have an overactive imagination, though! Dakar Quote
Adam the Ant Posted February 25, 2012 Author Posted February 25, 2012 Thanks for the replies everyone. They've been really helpful, I've got a nice amount of results, but I'll check back in to see if anyone else adds anything. Quote
SilvaShado Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 1. Are you male or female? Female 2. How old are you? 31 3. How old were you when you got your first Lego set and what was it? I don't remember exactly, but most of my sets date back to the early 90's so I was probably between 10 and 12. I don't know which set was first, sorry. 4. What is your favourite theme (past or present) and why? As a kid, my favorite theme was a toss-up between Castle and Paradisa. Paradisa really reached the girly side of me with the whimiscal sets. And I loved dolphins! Castle touched the side of me that loved fantasy. I grew up reading and watching a lot of fantasy books and movies. Today, the fantasy LEGO sets are definitely my favorite and that includes Castle, Pirates, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, Pharaoh's Quest, Prince of Persia... and I'm definitely looking forward to Lord of the Rings and the Monster Fighters. I would be 100% behind the Friends line if it had minifigures instead of the mini-dolls, but I will give the line credit as it does appeal to the little girl inside me who still loves Paradisa. The tree-house is one of my favs and I'll be buying the Friends sets for parts and tossing the bald minidolls aside (I'll keep their hair, of course). 5. Why do you like Lego? As an adult, I like LEGO for many reasons. It's fun, for one. It's challenging too. It helps me relieve the daily stresses. It's a hobby that my husband and I do together - we build almost everything together and it's been the greatest experience of my life, bringing us so much closer to each other. We compliment each other in our building styles. My husband likes to build big things and I love to do the detailing. It just works out so well. Oh, and I love the social aspects of belonging to a club. Quote
Hrw-Amen Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 1. Male. 2. 44. 3. Don't know, I had from before the point of my earliest memory which would be arounf three years old so before then. 4. Blacktron and Classic Space. Because it is grim and dark and space. (I also like Warhammer 40K so it is like a LEGO version, or Travellor/Laser Burn as things were when those themes were released.) 5. Because I can build what I like with as little or much effort as I feel i want to put into it without having to wait for paint or glue to dry. Quote
