A Lego Products Specialist provided this Dropbox link to download the single 203.5-MB PDF Building Instructions for the 9397 Lego Technic Logging Truck Alternate B-MODEL INSTRUCTIONS (9397-2): http://dl.dropbox.com/u/65195366/9397B.pdf . Hopefully, when TLG posts the B-Model instructions on their regular TLG webpages, they will be split up into smaller files. [NOTE: The Dropbox link has had its bandwidth exceeded.]

UPDATE: The Lego Group provided this link to download the PDF Building Instructions: http://bit.ly/yvNqjx .

Using Adobe Acrobat Professional, I split the original, high-resolution Lego Technic Logging Truck 9397B/ 9397-2 ("B-Model") PDF Building Instructions into these three pieces that folks can download via SkyDrive:

High-Resolution Lego 9397B Part 1 PDF (pages 1-107) -- 56.8 MB: https://skydrive.live.com/redir.aspx?cid=5641cce2a1cc0886&resid=5641CCE2A1CC0886!273&parid=5641CCE2A1CC0886!272 .

High-Resolution Lego 9397B Part 2 PDF (pages 108-199) -- 62.6 MB: https://skydrive.live.com/redir.aspx?cid=5641cce2a1cc0886&resid=5641CCE2A1CC0886!274&parid=5641CCE2A1CC0886!272 .

High-Resolution Lego 9397B Part 3 (pages 200-308) -- 84.5 MB: https://skydrive.live.com/redir.aspx?cid=5641cce2a1cc0886&resid=5641CCE2A1CC0886!275&parid=5641CCE2A1CC0886!272 .

NOTE: The page-breaks occur at logical points in the build. They may (or may not) coincide with The Lego Group's page breaks when they post the PDF files on TLG's websites. Also, there is no "Cover Page" on Parts 2 and 3; I just divided the single PDF file into three pieces small enough for SkyDrive to handle (i.e., less than 100 MB per file).

For those who would prefer SMALLER file sizes (for faster downloads and ease of printing, but still with adequate pixel resolution), I used Adobe Acrobat Professional's "Reduce File Size" option. These smaller PDF files are approximately the same size as TLG's 3-part instructions for larger Lego Technic sets:

Lego 9397B Part 1 PDF (pages 1-107) -- 15.0 MB: https://skydrive.live.com/redir.aspx?cid=5641cce2a1cc0886&resid=5641CCE2A1CC0886!278&parid=5641CCE2A1CC0886!272 .

Lego 9397B Part 2 PDF (pages 108-199) -- 12.3 MB: https://skydrive.live.com/redir.aspx?cid=5641cce2a1cc0886&resid=5641CCE2A1CC0886!276&parid=5641CCE2A1CC0886!272 .

Lego 9397B Part 3 PDF (pages 200-308) -- 14.0 MB: https://skydrive.live.com/redir.aspx?cid=5641cce2a1cc0886&resid=5641CCE2A1CC0886!277&parid=5641CCE2A1CC0886!272 .

Great News. :sweet: I’ve just downloaded it. Will start on it Monday. But i have to say i don’t like the cab. I’ve seen better truck cabs from Lego. So may have to make a few MODS :classic:

Thank for the link. :classic:

I think I prefer a single book to 2 or 3 small books

Hi David, et al.

I've been a bit absent from this forum for various reasons, but fortunately David sent me an email regarding this matter. I have started a discussion on the Ambassador forum, not just because of this particular case but to draw attention to the fact that if LEGO promises/sells something they have to make good on that promise. The dorpbox solution is a nice temporary patch, but it does not address the root of the problem nor the fact that any non AFOL who has bought the set still has no access to the building instructions he/she is entitled to.

If and when I get any kind of answer I'll report back here.

This B-model is awesome IMO.

The features are IMO very innovative for an official set (rear axle, cabin, mini LA for the blade).

Wow that animation is really cool. I wonder what program they use?

Could be one of the Adobe Creative Suite flash products. It doesn't play on my iPad.

DLuder, thanks for the 199MB pdf file. :classic: It appears to be a high res graphics one. High res is definitely much nicer to read. The ones on Lego.com are usually smaller in size with lower res graphics.

We are making so much traffic, that the server cut me off. I get this message:

Error (509)

This account's public links are generating too much traffic and have been temporarily disabled!

Yes, that's what happen, when the file size is 200 MB big. O well, I'll wait a little, ....... until 2am. default_laugh_new.gif

Just talked with Lego Tech Support and they said the drop box file is permanently disabled by the TLG, it was a mistake that they sent them out to a single person, and they will not be available for some time after speaking with her. So no point in continuing to try linking to this drop box file, Lego has no link between their pdf files and the drop box, apparently it is a separate service not associated with them.

For those who do not want to wait for the file to be again available, it is still possible to see the instruction on SeTechnic : http://www.setechnic.com/notice-9397-S.html

edit : oops, there is a mistake...

I fix that quickly.

edit : Fixed for the main pics. So it's ok.

The thumbs are still wrong...

I will fix that during the next days.

I just got this e-mail from the Lego Product Specialist again:

"Hello David,

...I just checked on the thread while out of office to make sure everything is going well, and it looks like the dropbox account I set up to host the file has exceeded bandwidth limitations. I was hoping you could update your post to reflect that, as we did not take the link down or block traffic to it. I am the only one with access to block that link, and I made sure it was public so anyone could download it. I will seek an alternative download link in the meantime, but please don't think we were trying to shut anyone off, we WANT people to have the B-Side instructions.

TechnicFreak mentioned that we took it down and it was a mistake, (this is not true, I very purposefully put this download link up for the fan community,) and we are not associated with DropBox. While we don't own/work with DropBox, I created an account solely for this PDF so you guys could get it, and I have kept the link open.

Additionally you mentioned using Skydrive, if that's something you are still interested in doing, it would certainly help while I get something else worked out in the meantime.

Thank you,

Jacob S.

I really like the 9397 B model. I have never built the B model for any set I have purchased, but I think I will for this set. The liftable wheel is a nice addition to the set.

On a side note, I've been very impressed with LEGO customer support. The fact that they are reading this thread and have gone through the trouble of creating a dropbox account for us is fantastic. More companies need to follow their example.

I, among many others I am sure, would like to extend a very well deserved thank-you to DLuders for taking his time and effort to make the 9397 'b' model instructions available to us all. He has gone above and beyond on a weekend no doubt.

Thanks very much, Eric

Oh my Lord - 308 pages!!! I don't think one hi-cap printer cartridge is going to do. Do believe this is the largest alternate instruction pdf I've ever printed. Got enough paper, but the color cart I had in only had a bit left in it, went up and bought another one, but think it is for sure going to take 2 at least. BTW, the low-res pdf seems to print quite clearly. Wishing I had a color laserjet about now...I have a good Canon Inkjet, but man I started almost an hour ago and only through about 2/3 of the first pdf...well 5/6th of the way through my first 107 pages (first pdf) and I do think it will take 3 hi-cap carts to do it, the one I put in at the beginning of the print job is gone down to about half.

As I sit here and look at the progress of the build, it looks already to be the length of the main model, possibly even the 8285 Tow Truck, looks really long...

I would have loved to see a review of the set on the forum! There's been a falling curve on that section on the forum the last year :sceptic:

Any opinions on this part though? I still think it's got to be the stupidest technic part ever designed (Bionicle not included).

@DLuders -

I did not know that you yourself had created that link, I thought it was something TLG had put up temporarily, and the woman I talked to Sat afternoon said they had no such link, and it was a mistake sending those instructions to you directly, it wasn't their company policy (however I did NOT mention your name in our conversation), evidently though you were in touch with a nicer, more willing to help employee of TLG. She simply looked at the link and said they were surprised something like this would happen and did not condone it, apparently they did not want the instructions released before an intended date, similar to their products being sold at TRU and Argo's before their official launch date of March 1. Apparently, their were some delays in the pdf files that were being sorted out by their technical support group and hence they didn't post them right away, like they normally would with any model released. I wasn't trying to bash you at all, my friend, she found the link and said it was inappropriate (just quoting her) and I thought it was TLG's Drop box link and not yours. She did say it was disabled due to a huge amount of users trying to access it. No hard feelings I hope, you and I worked hard to get those 'b' model instructions, you had more luck, I had much less, and this woman wasn't very kind at all and though I thanked her for looking, she just hung up on me, I didn't get hot or anything with her, but she must have been having one of those 'days', and was extremely unprofessional at customer service. Just let it be known, I thank you sincerely for your efforts to bring the model alive.

Thats quite a lot better than TLG then. They have used it to solve a problem which they didn't have, as it is completely unecessary in the log loaders gearbox.

It just seems like a waste to design a new part for such a marginal use. There's so many other parts they could put into production instead.

Well I just finished building the B model.... had to demolish my Logging truck first but have had a great afternoon playing.... done a modification to the tipper section by adding a bed in it as the original design is open.

Will get the pictures on soon and do a video.

The fact that this is the first set this new part appears in does not mean it was designed with this set in mind. As a matter of fact parts are (almost) always designed to be used in multiple sets. It is very likely we will see better examples of the use of this part in the near future.

Povratnik reports that "The instructions for the B-model are now available on Lego web site. 9397 B - part 1 and 9397 - B part 2."

HOWEVER, the "Part 2" booklet stops at Page 300 -- it omits the last eight pages (301-308). I'll report this problem to TLG yet again.... (sigh) :sceptic:

The 9397's B-MODEL PDF Instructions are not yet posted on the LEGO.com Customer Service Building Instructions website. The Technic.Lego.com website is the one with the two-part PDF building instructions available; Pages 301-308 are missing!

Not only that, but apparently the file was split into two parts with some unregistered shareware because there is an annoying warning link on the cover page to go buy the software. This is not really acceptable for a file published by a multinational company.
