WetWired Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 Some of you might remember these guys from a few years back, I've posted each of them individually on CUUSOO now, there's also full galleries with more picks on the respective flickr pages Job Bot #1 MA-X: Medical Android Version 10 Accident by Brent Waller, on Flickr Job Bot #2 EARL: Enforcement & Apprehension Robotic Lieutenant EARL: Enforcement and Apprehension Robotic Lieutenant by Brent Waller, on Flickr Job Bot #3 FRANK: Fire & Rescue Android Revision NK Frank Profile Left by Brent Waller, on Flickr Job Bot #4 ALA-N: Astronautical Lunar Android 9 ALA-N Exploring by Brent Waller, on Flickr Quote
Ceroknight Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 Those look absolutely fantastic! The astronaut is just brilliant and that tear on the first one is a nice touch Quote
Flint Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 Lovely, Wetwired. All of them are full of character. I find the fireman the most inspiring one, but the rest is great too. Good job on making bricks into robots, and robots into characters. Quote
ZORK64 Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 These guys are fantastic! EARL and ALAN are probably my favourites, but the other two are also great. Quote
Masked Builder Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 So cool! My favorite is EARL! Such nice heads on all of them though. The shaping is amazing. Quote
zinfinion Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 Awesome bots! I saw your posts over on the GAF and was hoping you and they would show up here so I could give your awesome works the applause they deserve. Do you have any plans for either photographic instructions or making them in LEGO Digital Designer? I'm betting most everyone here would be interested in either option. On the other hand, if you wish to keep us in reverent awe of the mysteries of your creations, I can understand that. Quote

Do you have any plans for either photographic instructions or making them in LEGO Digital Designer? I'm betting most everyone here would be interested in either option. On the other hand, if you wish to keep us in reverent awe of the mysteries of your creations, I can understand that. I wasn't planning on it to be honest, takes so long to do instructions. I could possibly recreate them in LDD but it's time consuming. I don't actually have any of them assembled anymore, I could recreate them pretty easily though (and possibly even improve them as I have more pieces now than what I had when I made them), I've got a bucketload of photos for them to look at to deconstruct again. I actually have some funny early photos of FRANK when I was attempting to make him in a red colour scheme, he ended up looking more like santa claus so I abandoned that idea. Quote
zinfinion Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 I just now noticed the dates on the photos on flickr, over 3 years since you took those. And as far as LDD, it is indeed a bit of a hassle when it comes to robots/mecha. Getting any sort of pose, especially with all the joints your bots have, is a nightmare. Regardless, I look forward to any future bots you may dream up. I'll be getting the MBA Robot Kit in the next week or so and if I add in Lex's Power Armor and the Creator Rescue Robot, I should have enough joints and bits to whip up some mecha of my own. Quote

Yeah I ended up doing an order aaages ago of just a ton of ball joints, must have about 30 full sets of male and female connectors for it. The females are actually prone to breaking over time, I've got about 3-4 broken ones so far. Quote
Aanchir Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 I love these designs! They are very imaginative, the way they take inspiration not only from the uniforms a human in these roles would wear but also (especially in the cases of MA-X and EARL) from the vehicles and equipment used by individuals performing these jobs. I also love the cute names you gave them. My favorite of these is FRANK, whose rotund shape and attractive firefighting uniform make him extremely endearing. The scene you've photographed MA-X in is grimly amusing as well. A part of me kind of thinks that EARL would be cool with a pair of the handcuffs from this year's Hero Factory, but on the other hand I like how these guys rely on brick-built detail rather than designated "action figure parts". Great work on all of these! They have a lot of personality and charm. Regarding breaking ball joints, the newest style of female joint is not prone to breaking. It was introduced last year and is magnificently sturdy. It can be found on Pick-A-Brick or Bricklink under the Design ID/part number 92013. Quote
Poison Ivy Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 The scene you've photographed MA-X in is grimly amusing as well. Despite it looking somewhat like the robot ripped the man in half. Gotta love the clever acronyms to give them more human attributes. Quote
WetWired Posted February 26, 2012 Author Posted February 26, 2012 Despite it looking somewhat like the robot ripped the man in half. Gotta love the clever acronyms to give them more human attributes. People have asked me a few times what the actual story behind that photo is. I like to leave it up to interpretation, did he accidentally tear the guy in half while trying to fix him?, unaware of his own strength? or did he arrive too late to the scene of an accident and after trying in vain to piece him back together lets out a desperate cry to the heavens. Who knows? Quote
zinfinion Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 did he accidentally tear the guy in half while trying to fix him?, unaware of his own strength? I've always assumed this is what happened. And LEGO asking you to change the dismembered photo on CUUSOO was rather humorous. Quote
KimT Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 I come here too seldomly these days. Awesome MOCs - I really like the amount of detail in them. Keep up the good work Quote
