Hi,

I read this forum about a week ago and it was all the inspiration that I needed to get started on building one myself. So naturally the next night I started out making the orders on bricklink. I decided to purchase all the parts, rather than use existing parts. That night was oh so long and resulted in me staying up until.... 5am :S making all the orders that I would need for all the 5 million (5000+) parts. This was a mission as I was determined to get the ordering finished in one night and some sly people were buying things that were in my shopping cart before I could! Especially on the chrome bricks store!!! I ended up having to go through a checklist the next day to find out which parts I had lost which was a massive task in itself.

I live in Australia... So shipping was expensive... Although I am quite proud of being able to buy all the parts- including shipping for:

$796.60 AUD (approx 650.00 EUR) which I don't think was too bad!) I found that having two or so predominant large stores is really important in shipping costs as I ended up purchasing 4000 of the parts between two stores, which cost approx $20AUD/kg shipping

Total of 28 orders on bricklink

Now all that is left is the wait for all the parts to arrive in Australia. The poor postman on the day when they all arrive together.... Hahaha

You bricklinked all the parts for this model for 650 euro? That's quite impressive! I have to admit i'm a bit jealous, i would have loved to enjoy the building experience of this epic set myself. But i wouldn't know where to begin trying to explain spending 650 euro on LEGO to my wife

I hope your parts will arrive soon, so you can start building. Have fun!

Hahaha I can see your problem, it work for me because I'm only 21 and single :p although I do agree it was still quite a bit of money, but seeing the prices on eBay around $2500.00 USD making it myself was the only option and the buying do far has been fun. $2500.00 for a Lego set?!?!... I'd be better of buying a small car an putting a millennium falcon sticker on it hahaha.

I am considering selling it once I have built it if I feel that I can't live with myself for spending so much on it... But I think il may become attached to it.

Hope you get to build one soon :)

really like the stand, it make the falcon shines, bravo:)

Just a quick question though... I have ordered most of the "cheap" parts for the falcon, I've already decided to go for black lever instead of grey (it's way too costly), same for the parts that covers the reactor, I'll buy it in black instead of grey.

Only expense i'm willing to do, is the satellite dish (60€ or so), but then... I don't know what to do with the dark bluish grey cone. 98 of them, at nearly 2€, I simple can't do it.

I fail to see if those 98 cone are visible, if I take them in grey, to save money... anyone could tell me if all those 98 are truyl visible like nose in the middle of a face?:)

Would anyone be interested if I started another forum for my 10179 project? It has been so great and well worth it :)

If you're going to be taking a lot of pictures detailing everything you do and writing a lot about the project, then it would be okay to start a new topic.

Why don't you buy these instead? They're the updated versions of the cone. The only difference is the top groove.

Has anyone considered taking an image of the printed dish into photoshop, transforming it to the correct shape and size, cutting out all the negative space, and then printing the image on a clear sticker?!?!?

I definitely think that starting a new thread for my project would be very valid. First of all I am living in Australia and there are some users who have been put off the project because of where they live, I am showing that you can do the project cheaper even than other users are making it in the States and Europe!

Secondly i am going to try techniques, such as the sticker idea I mentioned above, and painting/ dying pieces to save on pieces that are very rare, and ridiculously expensive!! I don't think other forums about bricklinking this set have included things like that. I want people to see that it is very possible that you can make this set with great results and at a reasonable price :D

And the whole process so far has been so much fun, I can't help but rave about it!!

Sorry for bumping my thread,

but I want to show you the paint job of the rigging parts.

The painting was still ok, until the temperatures are rising during the last days.

I used a primer and a very good flexible paint. Right now I think I´ve to test grinding of the parts and repaint them.

It´s not so easy as I thought, but I don´t want to buy the expensive original parts.

I hope this will help anyone, in the desicion of using black or brown rigging parts.

Thanks for posting those pics.

I orderd 6 rigging parts in black (got 2 free in fact, form LEGO directly).

I'll use my CITADEL primming white paint, and then the citadel colors I use for my painting (also got some vallejo). Just need to find the right gray.

It look good on your falcon Bob', and like you, I don't want to spend too much.

I changed my order for the lever (light gray instead of the original), same for the cone, only that saved me for than 200€..

only part left to order is the...satellite dish, that, I can't avoid at all.

I'm SO looking forward to build the falcon, it's terrible (not all my briklink orders have arrived, so can't start at all)

Your paint job looks very nice! Hope to get my results on par with yours! default_thumbup.gif

Why not use a blank dish?!

Enjoy building!!

I started building it today, 4 hours work, I really enjoyed it, the way it's built, for me, returning to lego world, it's really full of things to learn about how you can strengthen things.

Really, building that thing is totally funny and enjoyable:)

maybe a few different shades of gray, due to oldness of bricks can help creating a more natural look for the millenium falcon.. :)

Excellent point. Mixing greys/grays is a nice way to show age.

Now I am also running into my ruin...

I began bricklinking the falcon 5 weeks ago. Still must somehow tell my wife about it, before I start bulding. And it looks as if I'll be able to start soon!

I started with almost 3000 parts own inventory. Was quite fun to go through the complete lego collection, putting everything I dug out into a growing Excel table. Now the bricklink boxes are piling high, only a few parts are still missing. I'm planning to build the falcon during christmas holidays, can't wait for it. Will keep you informed if anybody might be interested...

As I see I am not the only one who started to BL this huge set.

Well, I started my project in february 2010 and I still missing around 1700+ pieces. I was checking through a BL store, and found the radar dish and thought it would be great to build 10179 from BL as I never will have enough money to buy the actual set.

So I bought the dish (for 5$!) and some other parts and started my project. I wanted to finish it for that Christmas, but I wasn't able to afford so many BL orders, so I've decided to finish it in 2011. But then I had to move to another flat (due to health issues) which I had to renovate. Since I do sometimes orders but only arond 100-150 parts for once. I wanted to finish it for this Christmas aswell, but I failed again. :D

I hope next year I can put it finally under the tree.

Sorry for resume a so old post, but i'm trying to replicate this stand for the Falcon: what are "stabilizer" under the feet?

Because I´m still waiting for the rigging parts, it was time to build a stand.

Warning! Don´t do this without stabilizers attached to the feet!

The angle to watch the falcon is now much better for me.
