Posted March 13, 201212 yr What is the usual timeframe Lego keeps a set alive? Is there any minimum and maximum timeframe? Does Lego ever reduce price for Technic sets? Is there any special policy for Technic sets or Lego treats all sets as equal?
March 13, 201212 yr Faster...Than...David....WOW! Umm usually about two years for the flagships and even the smaller items. Additionally, you can usually get sets from Lego Shop at Home for about 50% or maybe 40% off when they are at the end of their production run.
March 13, 201212 yr nychase is right, it normally is around 18 months to 2 years for Technic... Some system sets seem to go on forever, like the Death Star

March 14, 201212 yr I was thinking the same thing, I just picked up another 8043 on Ebay pretty cheap last week. My luck the,ll have a clearence on them and be 50% off next week, LOL. Dan

Is there any special policy for Technic sets or Lego treats all sets as equal? An even better question is, "How long will the unimog be kept on shop, and will it go on a huge sale?"
March 17, 201212 yr Well, since the 8110 Unimog U400 set went on sale at Shop.Lego.com in August 2011, it SHOULD be available until ~August 2013. It MAY go on sale in late Spring 2013. But, why wait? It's a great set: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMEQZ6R22nc

I really like the set but I try to be patient and wait for some stuff to go on sale. I think the sets I'll buy this year will be: 8063 Tractor with trailer (thought it'd go well with the unimog, to make mods and stuff) 8110 Unimog (of course) 9396 Helicopter (love it already) 9398 Crawler (simply could not resist)
March 19, 201212 yr Author I asked Lego about their policy about this. They said bigger sets are usually kept for 2 years and sometimes 3 years max. Smaller sets are replaced sooner. The licensed sets (usually non Technic) may be replaced much sooner based on legalities of the agreements.
March 19, 201212 yr Just a question, are all the Technic sets on the website available at the Lego Store. I am asking because I thought of going to the new Lego Store that opened up in Toronto and picking up an excavator by August, maybe for 50% off (Are the sales present on the website also present in the stores?).
March 20, 201212 yr @ Sama: Yes, the deals on the official Shop.Lego.com website are honored at the Lego stores too. I have visited several Lego stores throughout the USA, and you must devote at least an hour to appreciate all the goods there! Bring lots of cash, and they'll fill up big yellow bags full of goodies!

Oh I luv goodies. Hahahahaha!! Oh...but will the large sets (such as the excavator and the supercar) be available at the Lego Store? Edited March 20, 201212 yr by sama
March 20, 201212 yr Yes, they have all of the Technic sets that are available (at the same time) on Shop.Lego.com. Their selection is far better than one would find at any bricks-and-mortar store in Canada or the USA.
March 20, 201212 yr Hi, I am not sure that the 2 year policy sticks to "everything", I was recently able to buy from a LEGO shop this set: http://rebrickable.com/sets/8258-1/crane-truck It came out in 2009, and was considered rare for the past year. Then suddenly last Christmas it made a comeback in the UK I bought mine 2 weeks ago in Denmark When I asked the guy at the store why is this set back, he says it is a popular set, doesn't have unique parts that requires LEGO to keep special molds for it, and its price is attractive to people BTW: They had in the store the Unimog as well, but this set was costing 15% less Go figure... I guess what sells they keep, what doesn't sell they move on If the Unimog will continue selling even after the new flagship comes on, they will keep it
March 20, 201212 yr Aw man, your lucky. 8258 is not even available in Canada and apparently the Unimog is disappearing from Canada too. People say it is too expensive and there is not enough demand in Canada too, but, I was able to pick one of the few remaining (like 8) from TRU.

I actually envy you, unlike you, you have a LEGO shop, where I live there isn't a virtual or a real one :] Also you can, in an hour+- jump the border and go buy it in the USA, and probably you can also quite cheaply order it from the USA to Canada (via regular post), unlike me that needs to airmail everything. Lastly, I was looking for 8258 for 2 years now, with last year desperately tried to buy it in the UK, I was fortunate to find in Denmark, and when I saw it, I said I wasn't planning on passing the opportunity.| BTW Is it true that Denmark has the most expensive lego cost in the whole EU - for no reason beside the fact that their currency is strong?
March 26, 201212 yr @skylinedan - they had 2 on the shelf at a local TRU complete with a shelf tag last night, $199 so MSRP, no notorious TRU upcharges, guess they got more in or maybe had a bunch in the warehouse, wonder though if they were some of the original with the bad LA's though. Frankly I'm quite surprised that the 8043 is still being sold on S@H and TRU, it is a quite aged set in Lego's terms, usually its been about 1.5 years average before retirement, then the prices shoot up on BL and Amazon. Some sets are quite mysterious though, the 8275 Bulldozer only had a run of less than 3 months in 2007 and there were no quirks or problems as there has been with recent large sets, the 8043 comes to mind, that was a mess when it was first released in July 2010. Some of us had to wait until October to get replacement LA's, I put my order in on 9/5, didn't get them until second week of October as they came overseas I guess. Some other sets last better than 2-3 years, usually the smaller ones though as they aren't as popular as the bigger, more in demand sets. One would think Lego would keep producing high demand sets for more profit, or re-releasing certain sets, the original 8459 Front End Loader was first released in 1995 or 97, can't recall which year and was released again as 8464 in 2001, then again as 8439 in 2004. Since 2004 I haven't seen a re-release of any set, the 8455 or 8421 would go like hotcakes if they released them again. However, prior to model year 2004 the grey colors changed too, my 8459 and 8464 both have the old grey and old dk grey pieces and the old blocky pneumatic cylinders, but my 8439 has the light bluish gray and new color dk grey and the newer style pneumatic cylinders, and the old 3L and 5L axles are light bluish grey instead of black which was the norm prior to 2004, but that would be a small thing for Lego to repackage. Kind of wonder what the MSRP would be on these 3 old sets if they were re-released, guarantee they would sell hard and fast though... I was thinking the same thing, I just picked up another 8043 on Ebay pretty cheap last week. My luck the,ll have a clearence on them and be 50% off next week, LOL. Dan @dolittle - never even saw the Unimog at any retail TRU stores in Michigan since its release last summer, but it is still available online at TRU and S@H, and I assume at the Lego stores, I live halfway between Chicago and Detroit area, so closest Lego store is about 150 miles either direction, not worth it with cost of fuel in my area at $4.00/gallon or higher, almost cheaper to pay the shipping, plus those cities are busy, too much traffic, etc. Oh btw - never saw the 8258 at TRU either, retail anyway. Its been gone from S@H and TRU online for some time now too in the US.
