Blakbird Posted June 10, 2012 Posted June 10, 2012 I built this model this weekend and thought I would share the results. The amount of work put into the design and instructions is really quite remarkable. Here is a lovely view of all of the parts, ready to go. And this shows a closeup of all the Power Functions and wiring. We have 5 PF medium motors, 1 PF large motor, 3 LEDs, 2 PF extension wires, 1 Battery Pack, 3 IR receivers, 3 IR transmitters, and 4 PF linear actuators. This is an incredibly fun model to build and to play with. By far the hardest part is routing all the wires and finding a way to hide them, but the model is well provisioned with places for the connectors and LED diodes. Here is the final result. It is very easy to control with the 6-way IR controller that Jurgen has designed. The main controls are provided by the two thumbsticks, and then there are additional controls for the skid steer. The XL motor for the boom linear actuators makes all the difference compared with 8043. The 7.2V rechargeable battery seems to have no trouble driving everything, and it is very convenient that you can charge it without even removing it from the model. Obviously the model is great looking and that orange color really makes it stand out. If any of you have thought about building it and have taken a look at the parts list, you may have found that a few of the orange parts are VERY rare. Chief among these are the 1x11 liftarms (you need two of them). These only came in one unusual model. I've actually ordered this model just for those parts (no one on Bricklink has the parts any more), but in the interim I have substituted black. What I discovered is that black works just as well and you can't even tell the difference. In the image below, these parts are the second row of the black stripe along the bottom. If they were orange, the black stripe would be thinner. I point this out so that you won't feel intimidated to try to get the parts for this set. Of course, you could also just build it in a more common color. Here are some views of the model next to 8043 and Jennifer Clark's JCB JS220. Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted June 10, 2012 Posted June 10, 2012 I made it for the afol show in Manchester if Sam42 could get off his back side he might show you some pictures. Quote
Jurgen Krooshoop Posted June 11, 2012 Author Posted June 11, 2012 Wow, thaks for posting, Blakbird. I feel honoured to have my model in the same picture as the iconic JS220 by Jennifer. Quote
GuiliuG Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 (edited) Nice excavator, it really reminds me the one I built last year. There is just one thing I do not understand : why have you placed the motor which controls the bucket in the second section boom? As you know, the farther of the arm pivot weight is, the harder LA will have to lift the whole arm. Edited June 11, 2012 by GuiliuG Quote

Hahahahahahah... right... because needing two is hard to find! I actually parted out 4 of the 8473 (Nitro Race Team) that Eric is referring two. I needed 16 of the 1x11 liftarms for a project I am working on. Since building the Zorex is on my "eventually" list I also made sure to grab an extra 2 in the process. Its taken me 6 months to collect those liftarms. I was going to post a picture in a new thread showing my collection of these unbelievably rare orange parts. If you are wondering...the 1x4 thin liftarms in orange are almost as hard to find and 1x9 thick orange are even harder. Random side point... the other nice part about those 8473's is that they also have the second most qty of the black axle pins (21). Nice to have extras of those since some builders models have started demanding they be used...haha...I am looking at you Paul! Quote
Brewc Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 Blakbird I notice you used the large bucket on the far one on the right what's the mod to use on Jurgens MOC? Quote
Blakbird Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 Blakbird I notice you used the large bucket on the far one on the right what's the mod to use on Jurgens MOC? There are no mods here, everything is built per instructions. Jurgen uses the small 8 x 10 bucket on his, and the official LEGO 8043 set uses the big 10 x 18 bucket. The large bucket is quite unrealistic for an excavator, so I like the small one much better. The ideal bucket would be the old narrow yellow one, but it would not look good on this orange model. Brewc Posted June 11, 2012 Posted June 11, 2012 (edited) Yes I built his 8043 MOC, I just glanced quick at your pic of the three side by side. I see that's the original not jurgens Edited June 11, 2012 by Brewc Quote

As you know, the farther of the arm pivot weight is, the harder LA will have to lift the whole arm. Yes, it makes the dipper heavier, but not too heavy for the XL-motor lifting the arm. Everything works smoothly. The main reason that the motor is in that section is to prevent the drivetrain for the bucket to go through the rotation point of the dipper. This way the dipper has more freedom of movement in & out. Quote
Theo van Vroenhoven Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 The Zorex is a really fun build! Personally I built a Zyellex and that looks really well too! The build was quite challenging (for me at least) but everything worked correctly from the beginning. To neatly organize all those wires is not easy but the body is quite large and leaves enough room. I have plans to build it in red and orange as well, since it is such a nice build. Jurgen thanks again for your great instructions. I am looking forward to the instructions for the Backhoe Loader! Quote
sapo117 Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 Hi guys, I tried to figure out what it the expense to build it from zero parts ( because I am building the Ultimate 8043 as well so I need my 8043 parts ) . I also would like to make it in RED ( for those who needs I can share the xml parts for orange switched to red ) , only for the orange switched to red. After a quick check seems the expense is damn huge... I feel something like 450€... is there anything wrong with me? Do you suggest to buy any other set can lower my expense? That should not be the Unimog, because I don't make it Orange btw... Ant suggestion is appreciated Quote
750ACE Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 I like how the boom actually looks proper and proportionate. Its not ugly or overpowering with the rest of the model. It just looks right. Quote
Sam42 Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 I made it for the afol show in Manchester if Sam42 could get off his back side he might show you some pictures. IMAG0118 by sam2442, on Flickr I played with it! It was awesome! Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 I think I spent about 200 uk pounds, but I did have a lot of the parts myself. Making this in red should be easy enough I would guess that 350 euro's should be enough to by the parts if you use the power function parts from the 8043. Quote

Blakbird Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 (edited) Do you suggest me to buy any set wich you think it's good for that, maybe not for saving, but because of a lot of parts might go in that one? I bought an extra copy of 8110 as a starting point. It comes with some of the PF components, lots of parts and lots of orange. I was able to take the extra 5x11 panels from it and make the snow plow for my existing 8110 at the same time. I was able to sell the tires and the pneumatics and make a lot of the money back. sapo117 Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 As I said I would like to make it red, not orange. I am thinking if I should buy 8110 and sell those unnecessary parts.... Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted January 16, 2013 Posted January 16, 2013 I would get another 8043 excavator and the 8070 super car, those two sets would get most of it done,I wonder if I could build it it red for you? Quote
sapo117 Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 Hi Ryan thanks for the suggestion, once finished the Ultimate 8043 I will se what to do. But if you build it form me I am loosing the best part of the game :D Quote

I now possess the modified 8043 that is in this discussion, perhaps in futuo if you can I would also do the Zorex! thank you very much Quote
Alasdair Ryan Posted May 19, 2013 Posted May 19, 2013 Hello Legomania94,welcome to the forum. You can see a parts list here. Quote
