Jim Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Hi all- Not sure if anyone wants them but I do have 2 Light Bluish Gray Mast Riggings available. Can provide a picture if needed. If anyone is interested PM me Obviously, I am interested as well. Quote
SheepEater Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 (edited) Congratulations! Interesting verb, 'Bricklinking'... I have done that for a few sets back in late 2002, when I got back into the hobby, because at that time I couldn't get any of those two sets for a decent price on eBay or BL, and they were made of very basic bricks. Obviously this was far less work than you but I still remember that it was quite addicting. And I had to do it all manually, at that time there was no feature to import a set into a wanted list - heck, there were hardly any Bricklink inventories at all, it was only peeron. So I have "bricklinked" these two sets entirely from scratch. Ordered the 3-2 finger hinges instead of the old 2-1 finger hinges. Eventually got the original instructions and original boxes, more than 2 years later. (In the meantime, to build them I used crappy inkjet printouts of downloaded instructions). For my 856, I actually have the 856 box, but 951 instructions And when I bought this set on eBay a bit later, 3/4 of the bricks were wrong, so I ended up 'Bricklinking' it as well. I remember that it was a PAIN to get decent transparent 1x4 bricks that actually stuck together. This was also when I started to create my own black Lego string (ie: from fabric store, and tainted black), identical to the original Lego string. Edited July 16, 2012 by SheepEater Quote
Nickylarson13 Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Hi, I read this forum about a week ago and it was all the inspiration that I needed to get started on building one myself. So naturally the next night I started out making the orders on bricklink. I decided to purchase all the parts, rather than use existing parts. That night was oh so long and resulted in me staying up until.... 5am :S making all the orders that I would need for all the 5 million (5000+) parts. This was a mission as I was determined to get the ordering finished in one night and some sly people were buying things that were in my shopping cart before I could! Especially on the chrome bricks store!!! I ended up having to go through a checklist the next day to find out which parts I had lost which was a massive task in itself. I live in Australia... So shipping was expensive... Although I am quite proud of being able to buy all the parts- including shipping for: $796.60 AUD (approx 650.00 EUR) which I don't think was too bad!) I found that having two or so predominant large stores is really important in shipping costs as I ended up purchasing 4000 of the parts between two stores, which cost approx $20AUD/kg shipping Total of 28 orders on bricklink. If you like I can email you the 28 orders from the bricklink stores that I purchased the parts from :) Now all that is left is the wait for all the parts to arrive in Australia. The poor postman on the day when they all arrive together.... Hahaha Hi Jcandmeirality im leaving in australia too and obviously trying to make my own MF. Im interrested in those transaction but unfortunately i cant PM you :s dont know why can you let me know how i can contact you for those orders thanks Quote

deanorth Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Thanks man, I'm sorry I didn't double checked the FAQ really.. my fault here. Quote
Jcandmeirality Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Ok so now I am verified, if anyone would like the PDF's of the bricklink orders I used to build a 10179 UCS Falcon you can either PM me or reply to this forum and I can get in contact with you and email them to you :) its great to see others who are keen to tackle this awesome project! It has been soo much fun, and I have only just begun actually physically building the set. Most of the fun so far has been receiving the packages I'm like a kid a christmas hahaha. Quote
Nickylarson13 Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 thank you Brickdoctor im going to do my parts then Jcandmeirality dont forget me, i will be back Quote
Jim Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 (edited) My tip on Bricklinking the Falcon: Using BrickStore is the way to go. You can import part lists from sets. You can edit the lists and export the wanted parts to Bricklink. The easiest thing about Brickstore is that you can import Bricklink orders and deduct the parts from your wanted list. After that, clear your Bricklink wanted list and export again. In my humble opinion this is way better than using Excel or something. Brickstore is your friend! http://www.brickforg...are/brickstore/ Another great thing is that Brickstore can lookup the average price of the parts you need. So you can see instantly which parts will set you back the most. Or which parts are rare, because of the high price. And my experience is that you can also order used parts. I used to order only new parts, but most used parts are perfectly acceptable. Will save you a lot of money, on parts and maybe on the number of orders, thus shipping costs. Fuppylodders Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 Second hand parts are definitely a money saver! Although it is good to check the stores splash/policy on the way they describe the condition of their used parts. I used to be a 'used part-aphobic' but realised that I was wasting sooo much money on new parts where second hand were (usually) perfectly acceptable and similar quality. I did recently get stung though =/ Forgot to check the store's splash (turns out there was no sort of quality control on their second hand parts) and of a 50 euro order, received a load of light gray parts that were severely yellowed and/or had teeth marks in them (even in the bricks! I mean how can it be possible to need teeth on bricks?!). So be careful, and if you're not sure, send them a mail ^_^ Quote
Jim Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 I used to be a 'used part-aphobic' but realised that I was wasting sooo much money on new parts where second hand were (usually) perfectly acceptable and similar quality. Totally agree with you, especially on the 'used part-aphobic' I overcame my phobia by ordering parts which where getting rare (so I had to). I noticed that used parts not necessarily means "damaged, colored or defective". Since then, I have ordered so many used parts, which aren't even distinguishable from new parts. Checking the store splash screen and terms is indeed the way to go. Quote
deanorth Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 For some parts, I have changed the color, some parts are really too expensive, and are invisible, so. But I agree with you, used parts are not at all a failure. Quote
Nickylarson13 Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 i guess im like Jfox im not a used part-aphobic but ive got a bit of OCD and i wont be abble to look at something else out of 5000pc but i will try to do a test with both used and new and see how much money I can save, i will let you know Quote

Some parts are simply not available as new anymore. I can assure you; when you overcome your used-parts-aphobia you will be glad you can order used parts as well Quote
deanorth Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 considering the price, I've ordered 90 light gray lever, instead of the one from the UCS set, because the price difference is...huge. I hope the color won't be too different, but it cost me 11€, instead of more than 120€... Quote

I think most of the latest collectors ordered light bluish grey with a black lever. So did I. The color difference will be noticable, but it won't look ridiculous. After all, they are just greebles. jFox Posted July 17, 2012 Author Posted July 17, 2012 Wow, looks like a lot of others have gone this route as well. Nothing wrong with more Millennium Falcons! ... I can assure you; when you overcome your used-parts-aphobia you will be glad you can order used parts as well I've finally started to overcome my phobia, and since then have ordered some used parts! Some have been perfect, others... not so much. Had a used minifig head show up with several bite marks all over... poor bastard never stood a chance against whatever beast or child attacked him! Unless you've built it (or are building it) and know they should be a different color, you won't notice it (or care). I think the same goes for the rigging pieces in the back. I know they should be grey, but the black works just fine for me. Keep at it, guys! The end result is definitely worth it. Quote

I originally ordered the light bluish grey with black handle just to complete the MF, but have been slowly incorporating in the correct ones because I want my MF to be correct. I won't pay a couple bucks for one, but when I buy lots or something like that, if I find some light bley handles I throw them on the MF and have replaced probably half of them so far pretty cheaply. Yes, I ordered the crazy expensive parts because I wanted it to be right. I tried to order new on parts that I knew got beat up easy and used on parts, like bricks, that SHOULD stand the test of time because they are easily removed from other bricks. Plates I generally went new. Some parts the difference from new and used is only a couple pennies, so might as well get the shiny new part was my thinking. Since I knew I was getting nailed on the instructions, stickers, and radar dish, I wasn't too worried about a couple cents on new vs. used. Quote

Axtell Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 Long time lego builder, new poster here and this idea got me finally motivated to start working towards attaining this massive set. I ordered my first two bundles last night, totally 1,600 pieces, and looks like that unique dish is now selling on bricklink for over $80 USD. Going to have to keep my eyes peeled for that. As far as the original manual goes, calling lego and spending the $50 is all you need to do to get an original one? Just got off the phone with the lego shop at home folks and they no longer have the manual available to order. Blech. Only one I see on ebay they're asking over $400 for. /sigh Quote
deanorth Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 You can download on lego site the manual, but I would like to have it on paper, it's much easier that way, I might call them after I got all the parts. So far, I've swaped some places for other colors, and for some other shapes (the cone especially). I've received the first packages (long trip, 15000km:)), I've ordered around 4000 pieces, only the more expensive are not cover yet, and all the wegdes part. I'll try to finish that before christmas, but what trully saved me, cost wise, was changing some color for invisible stuff, or for some visibile stuff (like the lever, I ordered them in light gray insteal of the original color, saved around 100€ I think). Just by changing colors, I saved around 300€ I guess. I'll only have to buy the expensive dish (70€ or so), and...start building I hope. Quote
juzo Posted July 21, 2012 Posted July 21, 2012 Wow, keep at it guys, i truly admire your dedication! I'm still considering this, but a guy has contacted me with a secondhand set for sale at $1200 AU with all the parts and original manual in mint condition so i'll probably be taking that route, just doesn't have the box but i can live with that! jamesuniverse Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 On the topic on Bricklinking sets.... Has anyone experienced Bricklinking 10143? (Death Star Figless version) I was thinking of doing 2 of these sets, but I don't know how complicated it may be or if there are any uber expensive parts, besides the sticker. Quote

There's a detailed topic on that by Lobot. Quote
Buzzetta Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 I just want to offer a thanks. If not for this thread I would not have been able to get my Batman Tumbler. I order the bricks over bricklink along with some other odds and ends and it was still cheaper than buying the set used. Again thank you... OK ... back to lurking. Quote
yosemitesam Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Hey guys, I'm new to this site but I love this thread (just found it with google) I am in the middle of collecting my third and fourth Falcon. The first one was the most expensive one (750 Euro) cause I also had to get used to Bricklink and the Legoshop. The second one was cheaper (650 Euro, 700 with instructions) I Have 2400 pieces now including the LBG boath rigging things, dish and 20 LBG levers for the third one And dono how much for the fourth yet but the LBG rigging things and dish I have As for that bricklinking a 10143. I also did that and it cost me about 450 Euro. There are no realy hard to find parts but the shear quantity of some is difficult. And FYI, the "Tan Hinge Brick 1 x 2 Base" doesn't come in that color anymore, so use white ones (that's the color Lego shipped me) Quote
