I agree with this approach - I also replaced the 1x9 piece in the center with a 1x11 piece and connected to the 10th hole. Works perfect and you can easily fix by taking off the cover behind the wings.

We should suggest LEGO to deliver that piece instead of the 1x9 which is crap - no idea how they got it to work for their videos though.

Only problem might be that you have no 1x11 piece left - I took mine from Mindstorms set.

I have an extra 1x11 technic liftarm, so I wanted to try this out. Which ball end do you put into the 10th hole? Is it the one that connects to the bar, or the one that goes inside the rubber band?

Thanks,

Kevin

My son's 11'th birthday today and this was his present. Apparently lego still ships these with a 1x9. He asked me to find his mistake when the elevators wouldn't go down, but I couldn't. So he replaced that 1x9 on his own with a 1x11 before I found this thread. Glad to know that's an acceptable fix. He used the 9th hole for the rubberband and the 10th for the string. Had to add an extra piece to have those attach to different points. That mechanism is a bit weak, but definately not a bad model. It's taken him over 3 hours so far and he's having a lot of fun with it.
