I want to enter the contest under Category 3: Classic Modular and in the rules it states "Entries should be 32x32" but not must be. So I feel the rule is flexible.

I am just putting the finishing touches on to a modular building in LDD that will be 32px wide. The building has the correct paving at the front of the building and is every way a modular building, except one issue. The building is more that 32px in length (depth). This is because of what the building is, other buildings will still click together and it won't look out of place in the line up and was wondering would my entry be accepted or not? I am willing to send some images of the building to a staff member via pm if it helps them to decided.

Sorry for the rambling but like to be 100% sure first.

We don't want you to spend your time counting bricks and we definitely don't want you to neglect the interior. A MOC is naturally going to be less 'efficient' in terms of piece usage than an official set. So, piece count certainly isn't the most important criterion, but making it fit in with the rest of the Modular Buildings line in terms of scale is.

I like this contest more and more :)

They must be then (I have updated the rules accordingly). I'm sorry, but we have to draw the line somewhere.

Just to be clear, all configurations that have appeared as an official set are acceptable: a 32 x 32 building, a 32 x 32 corner building, or two 16 x 32 buildings clearly presented as one 'set' of buildings.

Hello everyone.. Long time lurker, new member here. I'm looking forward to seeing the entries for this contest. I'd love to participate as well, but I registered a few days after the announcement. The contest rules indicated I better get off my butt and register if I want to participate in future contests! At least I'll be ready for the next one.

I think I know the answer already, but can we make brick-built doors and windows? I know things like skylights can be brick-built, but what about the regular facade windows and doors? Do they need to be lego pieces so our entries match the offical sets better?

I was going to be sneaky  and pm this question, but I figured everyone should know.

I have to say that I'm quite enjoying this contest.

Town Hall has brick-built front doors!

Are we allowed to cut flex hoses to make them shorter? I'm only asking because the rules say no modifying parts, but some official sets have you cut hoses. I'm using them for axles.

Yes.

I meant overhang, not on the sides but the front.

I'm not a moderator, but I think it just has to be in the same fashion as the other official sets. Every building will have a slight variation in depth, just like in real life. So I'm sure a small overhang might work, depending on how well it fits in with the rest of the sets. The official sets have those little awnings, and then the mini version has that small overhang of the awning with 1x1 plates. Sticking out too much further from that might stand out too much and not blend with the other modulars. Just my two cents.

Just my two cents.

Exactly. The entries for categories 1 and 3 especially have to fit in with the official (Mini) Modulars. But if you want to put a number on it, I don't think your 'overhang' should be more than one stud.

Yes, a contest such as this is a great way to build outside my comfort zone for a change

And the deadline is pretty far away too

Let's see, "must include sidewalk"... right, it probably won't be a very smooth sidewalk in my entry, I barely have enough grey tiles.

For category 1, does it has to be in the city or can it be near a city?

What are you planning on building?

1 more question from me.

Does the backlane for the 32x32 Modular have to be 8-stud wide? or can we be flexible with a narrower one?

Thank you!

EDIT: Added in 32x32 Modular in response to Rick's reply below. Thanks, Rick!

For the 32 x 32 Modular? The Grand Emporium uses the full depth of the baseplate for the actual building, so yes, it's allowed. Personally I always like to see a bit of 'scenery' there.

I'm curious about the "must be similar in style to previous official releases" rule. Does this rule out "illegal" connections or part usages like cheese slope mosaics or minifig hands?

No, most importantly because we don't want to hamper your creativity, but also because it'd be impossible to 'enforce' rules like that. Just don't overdo it.

Please note that the rules have been changed so that members who joined after the contest announcement was posted are allowed to enter. Members who joined in May 2012 or later will not be allowed to vote for their favourite entries though.

Quick question. When will the prizes be announced? Seems pointless to enter (or at least add your entry) when nearly 1 month into the contest there are no prizes listed. I mean why enter before you know what you are looking at or there is really an award to make it worth while and fun to try your hand at? I'm about ready to enter a model, but do not want to do so until the prizes are announced and I see the contest is fully thought out.

One other thought/concern is with the rules changing seemingly quite a bit (clarification is good though). To some degree this is making it an uneven playing field. In particular I refer to new members now being allowed to enter when in the past this was not the case. This would seem to defeat the purpose of the contests being used to reward (and promote) member activity and also so non-members (lurkers) will join now so they are ready for any upcoming contest such as this one. Instead the new allowance may very well get members to joins just for a certain contest and do nothing more, thus not being a real "member" of the community just a "prize seeker" so to speak. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for great entries and new members, but not when the original rules were stated to allow only past members. To change it to allow others into the previously defined contest is unfair to anyone who already entered or was working on their entry.

Just my two cents on the new post. Looking forward to the awards being announced so I can post my model.

P.S. Is there an easy way to find all the currently entered models?

My thought is that the prizes in these big contests rarely suck. Even if the prizes are so so, a free Lego set is a free Lego set, and that doesn't make me enjoy competing any less. :classic:

As far as the rules change, I feel that two months is plenty of time to refine my design to account for any new clarifications.
