ZCerberus Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 I bet this has been a topic of great debate before, but I am going to bring it back since I am somewhat new to the history forum. For xmas, my mother got me a LEGO coffee table book with a lot of illustrations of past LEGO models. I always have such fond memories of past LEGO builds, but too be honest, when I looked back on some of the old models I really did not think they lived up to my memories. So that got me thinking- if LEGO was going to update a classic model to fit in to 2012, what classic CASTLE model or theme would you want them to update? Though they had hardly any sets, I would want LEGO to recreate the Wolfpack theme. For whatever reason, I like these two models: Another old favorite of mine would have to be this one. Would love to see an update to this: I have heard some people really loved the old "Guarded Inn". I think it was one of the first "Legends" sets released. Personally, that model never really did it for me. What do you think? Quote
Hive Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 Forestmen for sure. That would be amazing. Wolfpack would be good as well, though. Quote
Rotaser Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 I for myself would love to see the "falcon" knights back again. Well there is hope (there always is of course) due to the black knight in the exclusive joust set. Quote
Donut Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 (edited) So that got me thinking- if LEGO was going to update a classic model to fit in to 2012, what classic CASTLE model or theme would you want them to update? In almost every new castle theme there is always some form of a carriage or joust set. I think LEGO has done a pretty good job of providing us with those type of sets. I would like to see the return of raised base plates. Some of my favorite castles (Black Knights and Royal Knights) have raised base plates so it would be nice to see what LEGO can do with new molds and prints. Edited May 3, 2012 by Donut Quote
The Blue Brick Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 I would love a reissue of the Wolfpacks, or Forestmen. Quote
FarligOpptreden Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 I still have my "Wolfpack Tower" set - BURPs, ghost and all! I'd love to see a modern take on it though - a proper Thieves Guild sort of theme would be a fun addition to the Castle range. Quote
The_Cook Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 I always liked the modularity of the late 80's castle sets, how you could build a great big castle by clicking more together. What I miss (present tense, as a child as long as I had bricks to play with I was happy!) is a single large square keep, a-la the White Tower in the Tower of London or Rochester Castle, to sit in the middle. In these days of high priced, huge UCS and Modular buildings a proper keep could be made to fit the same price bracket as the 10188 Deathstar. Quote
Derfel Cadarn Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Interesting you brought this up Z, I spent many months debating weather to do a rebuild of the Guarded Inn with dark red, but never got round to it. I think it would be fun to try rebuilding some classic sets with new colors and techniques. Lots to choose from. The forestmen sets would be good as well as wolf pack. I am quite fond of the second crusaders castle, the one with the raised baseplate, I think it was set 6081. Might give that a try soon. Quote

I don't think I would want to rebuild it in the same LEGO style... more like I think I would want it to have the same "essence" or be "identifiable" as a take on the classic, but I would definitely want to take it to DC or ZC "MOC" type caliber of work. The blacksmith set that came out in 2002 as a "my own creation" could be a good choice for a fresh spin as well. Maybe I will try that one. Quote
Derfel Cadarn Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Yeah that's the one, always liked that set, mainly because it was the one that always eluded me as a kid. YesI fully agree about giving them a full make over. Not just rebuilding the set with new colors, but doing a larger more detailed version of the set. For starters, if I was to build that set I would create my own brick built rock base and the model would be larger but I would still keep to the basic shape so it's still recognizable. Would be a fun project Z, maybe we should both pick a faction and give them a 21st century makeover. Very tempting. Quote
ZCerberus Posted May 4, 2012 Author Posted May 4, 2012 Would be a fun project Z, maybe we should both pick a faction and give them a 21st century makeover. I've already got my eye on the 'pack. They only had like 3 sets though. I also wouldn't mind giving an update to the old "Dragon Knights" faction. I didn't really love all their castle etc, but their helmets were so boss! I think they had a wizard shop or something that was really cool at the time... this one... Quote
TheLegoDr Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Set 6081 is the only set unscathed from the beginning of my dark ages until now. It has never been disassembled since I first got it when it was originally released. Very odd for sure since my favorite all-time castle is the Black Knight's Castle, which upon exiting my dark ages, I immediately assembled. I was just considering this the other day about "rebooting" some of these older sets in a more modern style. I'm not sure if I ever will get around to it since I have so many other MOCs on my plate/list, but it is a very neat idea. The wolfpack were some of my favorite figures/sets also, but with all those great factions it is tough to choose just one. To me, that really was the Golden Age of the castle theme. I can't wait to see other people's creations if they do end up restyling these classic castles. Quote
LRDark Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Lately I've been making a larger and more detailed version of the yellow castle in LDD. I must say, it is coming quite well, although it would probably be too massive and boring for it to be an honest TLG set. I would like to see how they would remake the classic castle builds, especially if it would reintroduce that nice, classic visor piece. Quote
ZCerberus Posted May 7, 2012 Author Posted May 7, 2012 Here is a little teaser. Recognize it? After the postings for Challenge 3 in the Guilds subforum occurs I will post another MOC here. Quote

ZCerberus Posted May 7, 2012 Author Posted May 7, 2012 Indeed. It is not any better with the modern parts and colors, but the figure is actually nicely update. Quote
Hive Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 Here is a little teaser. Recognize it? After the postings for Challenge 3 in the Guilds subforum occurs I will post another MOC here. Looks good - except that to mimmic a real LEGO set, it needs more than the one color. Quote
ZCerberus Posted May 7, 2012 Author Posted May 7, 2012 Looks good - except that to mimmic a real LEGO set, it needs more than the one color. That assumes I want it to mimic a real LEGO set and not just capture its "essence"... This is more a copy with parts actually available in 2012 though. I promise the other MOC is NOT just a rebuild with newer parts Quote
Brinstar Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 I'd echo the support for remaking the Wolfpack. They were a painfully underutilized sub-theme back in the early nineties but both models were classics and I would love to see more modern versions. I also think 6081 Kings Mountain Fortress would be a good choice. I don't think its Lego's best castle but it has a unique design and a modernisation could improve some of the obvious defensive weaknesses the old model suffered from. Quote
Tria Posted May 7, 2012 Posted May 7, 2012 I would love a comeback of Black falcon knights! I would also love a comeback of Lion Knights of 1984 http://www.rittersets.de/loewenritter.html and a remake of the awesome 6080 castle, I just bought and it looks really great! http://www.rittersets.de/set6080.html Quote

Brinstar Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 That is a very impressive model. I think you have preserved the integrity of the original model but made something much more substantial and updated it with a lot of modern building techniques. I particularly like the design of the mountain and the houses that sit slightly precariously at the top. Quote
