If I am not mistaken, There was actually a Hero Factory model that had those in it last year...

The axle and pin connector, yes. It appeared in the set "Witch Doctor". But the dark brown treads are still new.

EDIT: Beaten!

I found this when brousing for new parts:

87082 - Red Technic, Pin Long with Friction Ridges Lengthwise and Center Pin Hole

Only 1 comes in this set:

9446 - Destiny’s Bounty

Well, I was browsing Bricklink for those track parts the other day, and I found out that they were produced in metallic silver in this set... and it only has two of them. Guess that makes them kind of rare

why are the tracks brown is what i'd love to know. also, speaking of tracks, the MT-61 crystal reaper has them in black. as far as i know, this is the only time they were black.

Lego sure does come up with some strange one off colors for parts every so often, but then you have very common parts like the 1 x 2 thin liftarm 41677.gif that don't come in yellow...

They don't like you Paul. It's hard for them not to be jealous, so to limit your building a bit, they don't release stuff you like or need

Ninjago and bionocle - 2 things I really don't understand from lego.... :sceptic:

Really useful post people. I would love a large number of metallic silver tread and I will be getting that Hero Factory set!

I was at AFOlCON where they were showing off some Ninjago sets, lots of new parts! We got to see the design process from initial model to final one. Very interesting!

To be honest, I really do not like chrome or silver pieces. I just don't like pieces that are painted.

The only reason I like about these Ningaco or Hero Factory or Bionicle sets is they are the only theme to include pieces in wacky colors!

You can find lego RACERS sets cheap and in good condition that are a good source for technic parts in rare colours, and also expensive SW-technic sets... :sadnew:

:hmpf: mmhhhhh...

I am a huge fan of lime colored parts and thus have 3 8649's Nitro Menaces, also bought the Ninjago wrecking ball crane (can't recall the part no offhand)for the violet parts, that is a really interesting color, I think lime and violet so rather nice together...bought the crane just to have another crane, huge fan of tower and tracked cranes, will take off the more funky mechanisms and make it look more like a Technic model...just haven't had the chance to crack the box open yet...off-topic but btw, what happened to the 8081 Extreme Cruiser? That was a more recent Technic set that I was kind of considering for a while, but now I can't find it anywhere locally, TRU seems to be the only source for Technic and while they don't seem to sell a lot of Technic in my area. Hate to pay shipping for it, but none in the area have it available. Some sets at TRU seem to come and go...went there tonight and found more 9395 Tow Trucks, and oddly 3 8043 Excavators from 2 years ago, makes me wonder if they were stuck in a warehouse somewhere and still have the original LA's...but I also saw the upsells were lower than they had been on Technic...a couple months ago TRU had a bunch of 8070 Supercars from last spring, and ton of Extreme Cruisers, but in the 3 stores in my area all they had available were the 9395 and the 9394 Jet Plane...odd

I think the Extreme Cruiser was a limited edition set.

I think the Extreme Cruiser was a limited edition set.

Yes, it was (note the yellow stripe on the right edge of the 8081's box):

8081-1.jpg

What exactly made these sets "Limited" anyways? Other than the Box saying so...? The 8041 Race Truck also said Limited Edition on it to, and it was around for quite some time, in fact it was on Lego's Shop at home site for about a week at almost 1/2 price... They probably had more of these sets produced then any of the other ones...

I think the general requirements are:

  • Look pretty (But not much substance when you look deeper)
  • Barely 1 or 2 technical functions for a heafty price tag which is normally only steering and a differential
  • Lots of stickers
  • Usually in the bargin bin 6 months after it's released

:sceptic:

Yes it was as DLuders noted as was the 8041, but like somebody else quoted, nothing really special about either of these sets, not much functionality, though I did like the looks of the 8041 and bought a bunch half-price at S@H to make trailers for them since they did have a fifth wheel...

I'll think it's limited that way it's made for at special toy store. And not for sale at every store you find.

Like Tous'R'Us special :-)

Lego sure does come up with some strange one off colors for parts every so often, but then you have very common parts like the 1 x 2 thin liftarm 41677.gif that don't come in yellow...

There's probably a simple reason for that. Those one-off colors often occur in high-visibility locations, and function as important details. This is the case with those treads on the Ninjago model, as well as many BIONICLE and Hero Factory sets. Meanwhile, the piece you posted is a tiny piece used more frequently as a structural element than as a visual detail. And since most models won't have it highly visible, it's easy for models which do have a lot of yellow to cut costs by including that piece in an existing neutral color like black or grey, increasing the budget for larger, more visible parts to appear in new colors. So there is a method to their madness after all.

That is a good point, but then you other sets that contain this same piece made in a one off color where it could have easily been Black... For example THIS set.

Oooo I love it when a new "one-off" part is pointed out.

That was in 2002, and in Racers, where a lot of weird things were being done. I think LEGO's learned better since then, as evidenced by the streamlining and paring down of the color palette and variety of elements.

Some of those Ninjago sets have a lot of different colors in them though...bought the Wrecking Ball set for the crane to modify, but as I look at it, there are many different colors, violet rather intrigues me...cool color...though not so much for Technic, there you need solid colors...take a look at the 8285 Tow Truck, it was mostly in red color, but the black exterior hid most all of the chassis and underpinnings...
