Elander Posted December 28, 2011 Posted December 28, 2011 My gut feeling is this theme will be more popular with AFOL's than anyone else.....that's not saying kids won't want LOTR....just the huge number of LOTR adult fans will want everything LOTR. Though I doubt it would ever come close to Star Wars. And exact that is the reason why exclusive sets for our elderly will be very successful. The adults buy the Death Star and all the other UCS Star Wars sets. Not the kiddies. These are happy with Battle Packs and play sets with cool looking minifigures like Lieutenant Gothmog or the King of the Dead. Damn, but maybe I'm just too excited for that theme... ...because it is sooooo much possible!!
Hiawatha Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 I can't wait for these sets, and even more the MOCs we can make with them.

I wouldn't list either of those characters on the 'cool-looking' list for kids, more on the 'cool-looking-but-parents-won't-let-me-get-because-it-would-scare-my-baby-brother/sister/me' list. Though I would love either of those. Edited December 29, 2011 by Darth Nihilus

Sir_Basil_Ashton Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 I really thought I didn't spend too much money on LEGO Star Wars. Knowing that LEGO Lord of the Rings is coming out, I can honestly say I'm going to spend a lot of money on this line. I already gave warning to my wife and she doesn't believe I could get any worse. The first wave of sets look good and they can only get better.
TheLegoDr Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 The more I look at the prelims I am more excited. But I rather hope the sets aren't as good as people want them to be, otherwise I would be forced to purchase more than one copy of each set... and I doubt the Mrs will allow that. hehe

I cant wait until Febuary when the lego toy fair opens. I won't be going but there are always visiters there who can take photos of the sets and post them online. Hopefully we shall get a chance to see what helms deep looks like from the inside.
Belchher Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 Prices for the first wave are up on one of the Australian toy shops sites here, and all I can say is !@%!...... We generally get overcharged a fair bit here in Australia, but going off what we do know on the set sizes ( and lets face it, TLG does tend to use a fairly set range of piece counts for their varying set sizes per wave ), it would seem here at least there's about to be a fairly hefty price increase in Lego. If you look at the equivalent upcoming releases in the SW 2012 thread you should be able to guestimate the prices in your local country ( the UK for example seems to just about halve the number and put a pound symbol in front, so Gandalf Arrives which is showing as AU$25 RRP should be about 12 to 13 pounds ).

Those prices don't even make sense...way overpriced. The Aussie is pretty close to the US. That would mean Helms deep to be $240! I can't see that happening, can it?

I can't see that happening, can it? I doubt there will be a 1:1 conversion on the prices despite how close the currencies are in terms of value. Having said that, anyone who was unconvinced that licensed sets cost more, there you go.
Belchher Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 I know they don't look like they make sense, but the sad reality is, even though the AUS and US dollars have been pretty much 1:1 for quite a while now, sets have still remained about 70% more expensive here over US prices. So for US prices, just take the ones on that site I listed and x 0.6, should give you a rough guide. eg: Helms Deep at AU$240 implies it will be around US$144, which still seems steep even for licensed. My feeling is that we're simply going to be getting more than the usual +70% pricing on licensed themes this year.
Angeli Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 Do you really think that Lego will allow such a beautiful opportunity for creation and profit be ruined with average sets? Who ever thinks that was asleep last five years ;) They will make wonderful construction, astonishing new weapons and armor, crazy hair molds, face prints and new things that we are not even dreaming about. This will be, up to date, the best theme Lego ever made, and 95% of AFOL's are going to agree, no matter what is their preferred theme. It will bring them so much money, that they are going to drag LOTR trough 8 to 10 years, and we will see ALL of the characters during that time, similar like Star Wars, only bigger. This s going to be the best move they made financially, from bionicle. And all we have to do is sit and wait. There should be no doubt about the greatness of things to come Remember this ;)
The_Chosen_1 Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 I honestly don't see the LotR theme lasting 8-10 years. Not that I think it isn't capable of doing that, but Lego tends to stick with licensed themes that constantly have new material being released (i.e. Star Wars or even Spongebob). While there are the two Hobbit films looming on the horizon, my conservative estimate for the line is 3-5 years.

TheLegoDr Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 If those prices are at all near accurate, then I won't be able to buy that many and I'm sure many others will be in the same boat. I have no idea how you Aussies do it with those price increases. There are too many sets I want next year to be able to spend all my lego fund on LOTR. And I do agree that LOTR will have a huge following while it is available, but I could not picture it lasting 8-10 years. Unless they kept rehashing the same sets over and over with new mods, similar to some of the Harry Potter sets. HP at least had movies and books coming out during a good chunk of that time. We will get a few really good years with LOTR and they may continue it based on the initial surge, but if prices were that high for too long I can't imagine multiples being purchased. Especially of the uruk-hai set, which is THE army building set. I guess we will wait and see how expensive they actually are to determine how many multiples can be purchased.

I thought that the Canadians had around the same prices as the Australians. But I looked on S&H and you do pay more than us. I'm figuring that it's going to bearound $180-$200 CAD for Helm's deep. But with this line I am willing to fork out the money; I just wont be able to buy multiples.

I would have to agree with you on your estimates. As much as I love Lord of the Rings, for me it's still a distant 2nd to Star Wars. I'm absolutely excited to see LEGO Lord of the Rings, more excited than I am for the 2012 Star Wars sets. I really hope the line succeeds but even if it lasts 3-5 years, I'll consider that very successful.
ghostmind Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 Helm's Deep is just a little cheaper than the Millennium Falcon on that AUS site. Going by that, I would expect it to retail at $130 to $135USD.
Saruman the White Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 I know helms deep is such a massive fortress however I am slightly saddened by the fact there is no throne in the set.
dwarf-brik Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 Urgh. Those prices are horrendous. Guess my plans for an Uruk army are out of the question now . Actually, looks like I will not be able to afford ANY of these sets, except for maybe the smallest set. Shoot.
Belchher Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 I guess what we all need to keep in mind is that it's still a fair while before the sets actually hit the shelves. Those prices could simply have been place holders the store wasn't meant to use, or if you're a cynic it might simply be a deliberate leak by TLG to see how bad our reactions are too them Also bear in mind that with the Joust set, when it first appeared on S&H with a price attached it was AU$200 for us, then vanished for a few days and reappeared with a ( slightly ) more acceptable $180 tag. I think it also worth keeping in mind that LoTR is most likely NOT aimed at the usual 6-14 or so age range most products are, the books and movies most certainly aren't ( or at best only cover the very top of that age range ), so perhaps the sets are more complicated than the small peek those leaked preliminary images gave us. The fortress section of Helms Deep, if nothing else, could certainly involve some slightly more advanced building techniques than is the norm and thus include an amount of hinge/snot/whatever pieces that would up both the piece counts and prices. All things said I guess its just too early to judge either the prices or the quality of the sets until we have official images and prices, although with world financial problems being what they are price hikes certainly wouldn't surprise me, first and foremost TLG is a company that needs profit to survive.
Brickmamba Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 lol how does the gandalf set retail for AUD24.99 with 2 figs and a crummy lil cart, i am comparing this to battle packs that normally retail for this price but apparently they are going up for the 2012 sets, really... there is the reverse perspective that the LotR line is aimed at AFOL and adults have more disposable income and therefore more likely to buy these sets regardless of over price
Haltiamieli Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 I know helms deep is such a massive fortress however I am slightly saddened by the fact there is no throne in the set. Throne? Afaik we haven't seen any pictures of the insides of the set yet, so there could be. Though when it comes to interior design, my trust in TLC isn't the highest.
ProducePrincess Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 (edited) I know helms deep is such a massive fortress however I am slightly saddened by the fact there is no throne in the set. The throne didn't have much of a part in helms deep. I'm sure if they make a set for the village they will have a throne. Edited January 1, 2012 by Black Rabbit
Jack Bricker Posted January 1, 2012 Posted January 1, 2012 I think that we will all have to just wait and see what the prices and various features are when the toy fair comes in February. I personally do not care what the prices are as I know that the economy is really bad even here in the U.S. and I Simply Want Those Sets! I do hope that Lego does try to keep the prices down as we all have our financial limits but, I would also like to keep in mind that prices have been going up all around the board for toys except for video games which has actually been doing better during this down economy for some reason.
