Kayne Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Like a lot of you have said, I will be using the LOTR sets to boost my Castle collection for armies and MOC'ing. I love LOTR, but I have not MOC'ed them at all. Not sure why, and I might some day, but for now these will be to boost my orc armies and also to add some great new pieces and torsos, etc to my armies. As to the Fleshie debate....I don't mind Fleshies at all. Personally, I incorporate them into my normal castle armies. I use Fleshies as elves, I have always just felt that Elves had fairer skin than the humans would, so Fleshies have worked perfectly for that. Now, with this wave I will get Fleshie elf ears to help the look of that! The only issue is that elves do not grow facial hair, so my bearded Fleshie faces have become kind of useless to me...

Fleshies as elves...that's an interesting idea. Would you mind posting some pics of your elves beside some castle figs for comparison? I'd like to see how well they go together. Also if you have any MOCs incorporating the two races (humans and elves) that'd be great to see.
Wolvarie Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 I don't even really think of LOTR as a Castle theme. There are obviously A LOT of similarities, but at the same time the style and theme is so very different even if they all use swords and bows, and there are kings and horses. I kinda feel the same with Pirates of the Caribbean.. It's got pirates, captains and ships but it's just so different from the typical LEGO Pirates theme. I love the Castle/Kingdoms and LOTR sets equally, but in very different ways. Agreed that LOTR isn't just castle, but really is a world rich in races and types of armour and dress and buildings as well. I guess we are a bit limited by what PJ decides to put into the Hobbit and as has been mentioned there aren't large castles per say in either LOTR or the Hobbit. Minas Tirith is just too big unless they decided to do a UCS of it.... Hobbiton, Bree, Rivendell, Dale, Mirkwood Elves, Laketown and Edoras are sets that could be done with a Castle slant as Tolkien's world is very medieval. Would be great if we could have a Pirate vessel being attacked by the undead. I feel there could be a large range of sets that really don't have such a complete building rather props to add to a scene. I just love to mash it all together and see what world you can create from it.
Ardelon Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 I'm also thinking of using the sets as parts packs. But we've only seen the first wave, maybe if I see more of what's coming to us I'll do LotR MOCs in their own right (though I will probably stay primarily an original LEGO Castle fan).
Odin's son Fred Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 As to the Fleshie debate....I don't mind Fleshies at all. Personally, I incorporate them into my normal castle armies. Sounds similar (and just as effective) as what I do. In my Castle world the fleshies are Half-Elves (like the ones from D&D) since they don't have the pointed ears like the upcoming LotR Elves. That way the bearded faces still work (for me at least). The PotC figs are a group of coastal Half-Elves that study science and sea exploration instead of holding to the "old ways" like their more inland cousins. The LotR sets and figs having a different look than the regular yellow fig castle sets fits in with this way of thinking perfectly (again, at least for me) and provides more figs to help diversify and expand the Half-Elf race. Come June the Human (yellow) factions will need to start uniting or the Half-Elves will grow large enough to over them individually....lol.
LRDark Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 I'm quite looking forward to these LotR sets (and eventually The Hobbit sets) so that I may further expand my existing castle world. More dwarves for my dwarf faction, more orcs, elves and humans. I still plan on keeping the sets 100% complete, and to me, LotR is absolutely a Castle theme, so there will be no need to change the context of why the sets are incorporated into my current world. Instead, my other factions will be "unmentioned areas" within Middle Earth.
Shroffy123 Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 One more month. Can't wait to get my hands on this sets!

Legonardo Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 (edited) For all LEGO fans living in Australia: According to this http://www.mightyape.com.au/Toys/classic-retro/LEGO-Toys/Coming-Soon/page3/ retailer, these are the Australian prices and release date: Release date: 17 September 2012 Gandalf arrives: 24.99 Shelob attacks: 41.99 Uruk-hai army: 61.99 Orc forge: 75.99 Weathertop: 99.99 Moria: 132.99 Helm's Deep: 230.99 that sucks. I really don't want to see what the prices are going to be in NZ now, I was hoping for helms deep to be 200 NZ and the urukhai army 50ish, but if they are that expensive in OZ... I just gave up my idea of building up a large army of Urukhai. Also to contribute a bit more to the discussion, The reason that I am was going to buy LOTR was for grey bricks and the uruks as just another ork force, possibly making a lotr moc once in a while, but the main reason for my interest in lotr is for castle. The Joker1 Posted May 5, 2012 Posted May 5, 2012 Ouch those Australian prices sound high! Does anyone know the English prices for these sets yet as Ia m a bit rusty on legos exchange rates.
just2good Posted May 5, 2012 Posted May 5, 2012 4 of the LOTR sets are available for shipping on Toys'R'Us.com for shipping in the US!
Masked Builder Posted May 5, 2012 Posted May 5, 2012 4 of the LOTR sets are available for shipping on Toys'R'Us.com for shipping in the US! Sorry TRU, I'll wait with those prices. But good to see them turning up!

Ash Posted May 5, 2012 Posted May 5, 2012 Just got back from "The Lego Show" (well I had several hours ago when I started to type this post) where they had all the sets on display and I have to admit that I was a little underwhelmed in some ways. Part of that was the display itself. A bit cramped and static and at ankle height. Actually a big part of it is just the colour scheme, compared to every thing going on around it the light gray is just so bland and doesn't really stand out. On the plus side the minifigures are fantastic. Probably the best I've seen. The level of detail and personality across the board was just really fantastic. The white hand orcs of the orc forge where the real stand out to me. The set looked fairly interesting as well. Weathertop was tiny, suprisingly so. But I think it's more that it's solid and opens up which makes it cool, where as at the show it was just closed and you couldn't really see any of the features or detail. Had a great couple of hours at the show and am going back with my kid tomorrow.

Perhaps or is it greed, I have been told the mark up on licensed product is much less than city or creator sets....so it might not be the retailers but other forces at play. Enough off-topic, people want to read up on about the sets, etc, and not prices from here or there.
Calanon Posted May 6, 2012 Posted May 6, 2012 A video my friend took of all the sets at the LEGO Show in Manchester, USA. It's nice seeing the sets in the bricks... makes me want to buy them more than the pictures do. TLG giving people ginger hair when they have brown hair though.

Australia is "Down Under" and unfortunately too far away from the plants. I think that is the reason for the expensive prices in Australia. In regards to the pricing I think you will find even though the AU$ is above the US$ at the mo this doesn't seem to make much difference as historically across the board Lego prices in Australia are 15 to 20% higher than those in the US, even more for a bigger set which can be double or more. Example of this new Starwars X-wing $49 Amazon US, local shop in my town $115. I can take the distance factor as we are a long way from anywhere, but my biggest gripe is on LEGO.com where it is correct me if I am wrong coming from the Lego factory. Do a price check on any large set from the US or EU, UK portal then flick over the AU one and you will see the angst all Lego lovers have down under and in NZ. It isn't just Lego its on iTunes and many other goods. The reply you get is different deals for different countries and the Aussie public have woken up to this fact and are using the internet to buy things from overseas is such large volumes that the local retail stores are feeling the pinch. So for the prices above shave 15-20% off the smaller sets and at least $100 off Helm's Deep and you will be around the mark. ,
Lynx Posted May 6, 2012 Posted May 6, 2012 Does anybody know whether the hair pieces of Aragorn and Boromir are new to the line? I intend to only collect one faction (Rohan), and those hair pieces would be nice in creating some custom characters (Theodred, Dunhere, Grimbold, Gamling, Hama and unnamed soldiers).

They also used it on Thor but in buttercup yellow (I don't think that is what the colour is called, but I heard it used once, so yeah) which was a nice addition, and could be useful in making Rohan men. I really hope they use this hair for a possible Faramir, but in reddish brown.
