You can't just say 'cheaper sets'. Better minifigures are worth it, and think about Pirates of the Caribbean. People couldn't really compare it to the 09 Pirates because they didn't make sets that were really similar. The only sets that could be compared, really, were the Black Pearl and Brickbeard's Bounty - and it's not hard to tell which most people would probably prefer. Same price, but the former had a much better design.

Your 3 pro makes no sense at all.

Hating fleshie figs is an opinion. I love them.

Pro 5 is about the only one with any leverage for me.

Oh, and con 1 should be turned into a pro. Again, refer to Pirates 09 and Of the Caribbean. It's the closest comparison.

Regardless of whether you'd rather have an original fantasy theme from LEGO or would rather a fully licensed series of Lord of the Rings sets, the one thing we can all agree on is that if this is true then a Lord of the Rings theme would have great parts for LEGO building in general, especially for fantasy and castle builders. Sure, a lot of classic pirates fans would much rather have had a continuation of the 2009 LEGO Pirates sets over the Pirate of the Caribbean sets, but they'd likely be telling a few fibs if they didn't think that the license bought some excellent pieces for the Pirates theme in general.

Personally, if a Lord of the Rings theme is released I wont be too bothered myself but I'm definitely looking forward to some of the pieces it might bring. (And I'm a fan of the books and films, for the record)

I agree with 'Mirandir', Lego is a construction theme toy just like for Star Wars....Haspro does figures, Lego does construction sets with minifigs....same deal for LORT (if it's still true  ).

Actually Hasbro has done a generic LEGO line or two, furthermore, remember so far the only companies to have any toy license for LOTR and the Hobbit are Vivid, Bridge Direct (the Hobbit) and Playmates (LOTR), first off Playmates does a construction toy line called intellibricks which they did for the LOTR line. and Bridge Direct (the guys who make the zhu zhu pets line)does have a construction toy line. and right now if a company does not have a license for the line already they will not have it for the movie premier of the Hobbit.

Lets face it times up and were out of time for LEGO to aquire the license for the Hobbit or LOTR (while set design may be kept secret by LEGO obtaining Licenses is not).

But we can always hope that LEGO will make a new Fantasy line (they have already made dwarves, elves and trolls and such).

Wow, hold on there, lets not get carried away. It is way too early for us to know whether Lego has got the LOTR license or not. First of all we have heard only rumors and only "1" of those rumors said that Lego was still trying to acquire the LOTR License. Also we have not seen any new wave of Caste sets or heard anything official about Lego not doing LOTR. Lego has kept absolutely silent on the matter which may be that Lego is or is not doing it. I personally hope that they do acquire the license but, whether they do or don't is still up in the air for those of us out of their inner circle. :classic:

Many of the retailers out there who have seen the catalogue know what's coming next year, especially in the licensed arena but have signed paperwork of silence so they don't get their butt's sued by Lego for opening their mouths and spilling the beans.

Only hints have been dropped but until one of the retailer's decide 'oh, what the hell....' we will all be guessing until we get the official yes or no.

I feel more positive about this being true, but we shall see next year. :classic:

The problem with this is that all these rumours are based on a rumour of a LEGO: Lord of the Rings video game, another problem with that is TT the company that designs and makes the video games is not owned by LEGO, but by Warner Bros., furthermore the previous TT LEGO games which will or do have LEGO sets were owned by Warner Bros. while newline owns the Hobbit and the LOTR rights.

Not too mention there is no evidence of LEGO currently (or even rumours to that affect) trying to obtain said license to make sets based on the movies or the books.

There were no evidence of LEGO currently (or even rumours to that affect) trying to obtain licenses to make sets based on DC Comics' and Marvel's super heroes until late july. And yet here we are less than six months later with sets starting to pop up in stores...

And besides the rumors are based on more than just a guy from TT Games saying that "a Lego LotR game would work". I believe we have had at least two unrelated posters claiming to know that it's real and another who reports getting funny reactions from shop employees when bringing up the subject... And besides, threads with false rumors rarely, if ever, reach 36 pages...

Well alot of the rumours are just that inuendos and such, I have read real rumours scoffed at by the site in general which ended up becoming reality and others hoped for that never came to be, as to funny reactions from shop employees, sorry but even a manager in a TRU would have no clue as to whats coming about and the funny reaction was "like, really? that would be cool" or "where is that coming from?"

As to being real lets face never has a new order book come up without being leaked anywhere and nowhere has any new books for late 2012 been leaked, which indicates that said books are not out yet, so it comes back to the fact no one knows yet.

as to this thread lasting 36 pages, lets face it, we are hoping such a theme will come out plain and simple, in fact i'm sure when the original LOTR movies came out the same rumours were very prolific on a LEGO version.

Also I repeat nowhere is it even hinted at that LEGO has aquired a license to make any LOTR/Hobbit sets, and considering it take awhile once license is aquired to design and test and produce sets, seriously doubt LEGO will be doing them.

and trust me on this if LEGO had the license either they would be shouting it out to the world or the Tolkein group would be.

Big chain stores know very little, their buyers do....not regular sales staff or even store/department managers. Independent retailers....now they get the information first hand, they do the buying, they do the selling.

Like I said, we must wait until we have word either way otherwise we'll just spam-up the whole topic.

I really hope this line is made by LEGO, but we wont know for awhile...so I don't think their is much point on debating; there is no hard evidence going either way.

I remember when the original Lotr movies came out, that many builders yearned for a LEGO line. But back then LEGO were just starting to do liscences. And Derfel you are really getting on my nerves, tell me already!

I like the part of cheaper sets.

Good one. I should have added that.

PRO9- Cheaper sets.

:sweet:

Price difference is really outstanding there. PoTC, like PoP, here are selling BADLY because not a lot of people loved them (PoP nearly no one, PotC someone, yes, but ... they don't seem to have sold a lot here).

Your 3 pro makes no sense at all.

Perhaps you're not sick of reading tons of post on a theme that maybe will never be released. Well I am. It's like a competition on who has the greatest tolkien culture. I read those books, and played the LoTR RPG for 2 years, but I don't come on flooding the forum for that.

Hating fleshie figs is an opinion. I love them.

Nevertheless I ended my post writing "my 2p". And IMHO TLC should have never turned to flesh. I loved those original star wars and HP in yellow. Lego's yellow is like a trading mark. Turning flesh was wrong IMHO.

The reason for flesh, in my opinion, was Lando. Yellow has usually been considered racially negative in LEGO, but when LEGO had to make a fig of Lando Calrissian, it just wouldn't look right in LEGO. But having just him as a colored minifig almost seemed racist in itself, so by the time the NBA sets rolled around fleshies were the name of the game.

Personally, I have nothing against fleshies. They've worked well in a lot of ways, especially where skintone variations are critical to a character (Yellow-skinned Palpatine looked terrible in my eyes). With regular non-licensed themes, yellow is still the name of the game, and I'm happy with the split.

I clearly have no doubt that they needed to do that because of Lando Calrissian. And, yes, I yet don't find any other better solution than the split. Nevertheless, I don't like that. I have tons of minifigs and the fleshies don't fit with them, I always sell them on bricklink for way less than the average price, for they really help me to get rid of them. But I think this isn't LoTR-2012 related, so I will stop here. I just add that people loving flesh minifig help me because if not, I would have to keep them and that's not my goal.

Really? I like the flesh a lot better than the yellow because it makes them more realistic. A yellow Bellatrix would look terrible...

Yellow all the way. It's all part of the LEGO style which is based a lot more on caricatures than it is on realism...

Me too. I really hate when LEGO does something like this. I think of it differently with MOCs though, that's the creator's choice.

LOTR is kind of a violent franchise. I mean I loved the Vikings theme released in 2005-2006 but Lego pulled that line at the end of 2006. I was very disappointed with that but I can understand TLG's reasoning. Vikings were very violent raiders in the Middle Ages and TLG was portraying them in a positive light.

Eh, Pirates are blood thirsty scroundels, knights & errants as well.

Oh, if LEGO does release LotR sets I'll have to watch it and not start painting them accidentally like I do with the Games Workshop models...

I never understood the reasoning that something is "too violent" for LEGO to make a series of when they have brutal themes like PIRATES and WESTERN and SPACE themes with intergalactic wars where the goal is pretty much genocide of the enemy by means of horrific weaponry. Hell, those of you who live in a big CITY know exactly how much violence is happening at all times all around you. Who's in charge of drawing the arbitrary line? What's the official company statement about it?

In Star Wars everyone is constantly killing each other and even go so far as to REMORSELESSLY DESTROY AN ENTIRE PLANET ALONG WITH EVERYONE ON IT, making it one of the most violent LEGO themes EVER. More than that, the weapon used to commit the genocidal atrocity is one of the most glorified LEGO sets ever, by both fans and The LEGO Group themselves. Star Wars itself is one of the most popular LEGO themes ever. Why isn't Star Wars being shunned by TLG since it's based on such a violent property? Because it's a cash cow of course.

Who are they trying to protect with their phony-balony "no violence" rule or whatever when they've released so many violent themes already that have been (and still are) wildly successful? I don't see anyone complaining about Star Wars or Castle where pissed-off axe-wielding men brutally pummel each other about the face and neck, so maybe it's about time to drop the "no violence" policy (if that is the policy of course, I'm not clear on that) and make more sets based on themes their fans desperately want.

And I'm not bashing TLG, I like many of the themes they've released and buy what I can to support them. And not surprisingly it's because I, like most of the rest of humanity, like violence and violent themes, and so enjoy having Sith and Jedi minifigs trying to rip each other's limbs off and build elaborate contraptions for my Space Police guys to efficiently kill (or at least cripple for life) the opposition.

Also, oops, went off topic :)

I'd be all over a LOTR LEGO series, with Toy Biz and their 6-inch LOTR figures long dead, LEGO versions of the series would fill the hole nicely.
