Derfel Cadarn Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 *Notes all the kids on Xbox Live* *Laughs* What do people think 'appropriate' even is, anyway? So true! I think more kids play violent military games than adults! Weather they like it or not, if Lego did release a military theme, it would sell by the bucket load, such is the way of the younger generation of today!
Lyichir Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 So true! I think more kids play violent military games than adults! Weather they like it or not, if Lego did release a military theme, it would sell by the bucket load, such is the way of the younger generation of today! The point of LEGO not doing a theme like Call of Duty goes deeper than that. LEGO works hard to maintain an image of being a family-friendly company. I never see parents who worry about their kids watching Star Wars, but I've seen a lot of concern (some justified, some not) about their kids playing violent video games. Plus, while some of the movies Lego's done themes based on have been PG-13, M-rated games are essentially the equivalent of R-rated movies, and LEGO's never done a theme based on one of those. But this is getting off-topic. I see no reason why LEGO's violence policy would affect a LotR theme.
ZCerberus Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 I think we all seem to agree on one thing- there is a lot of steam behind this and we should move past the will it or won’t it and onto what we will or want to see. I think since the release is coming the same year as the Hobbit (or so we all suppose), it will be Hobbit heavy. PotC and Indiana Jones had far more sets release on the movie property that was released around the same time than they did on the older properties in the franchise… same thing for years in which a Star Wars and Harry Potter movies came out. As popular as LotR could be, I worry some for LEGO any time they go with a licensed theme. I think the issue is themes that succeed (HP and SW, I am looking at you!) seem to have sets and builds that I would want outside the theme. In other words, even if I had never seen SW, I would want an X-wing or a snow speeder... if I had never seen Harry Potter I think the Hogwartz Express or the Burrow would appeal to me. If I had never seen PotC, however, would I want Isla de Muerta? Would I want the boulder escape scene from IJ? NO! We are AFOLs so we look for minifigs and cool new parts, but the main audience, the bulk of the sales, are probably with parents and tweens. They want things they think their kids would enjoy building. They are going to gravitate to an awesome space ship or fantasy castle over the fountain of youth or that goofy cave set from PoP every time. I am sure LEGO has done tons of research on this already, so they don’t need me telling them this, but LEGO needs to keep that in mind and give us siege weapons, castles, and Hobbit dwellings and NOT a recreation of a scene where the only thing to be built is a set is a tree or a small rock formation. If they have a $50 set and I am a parent, I would buy a cool little castle outpost, even if my kid had never seen LotR, over a collapsing bridge play set from the mines of Moria and my kid loved LotR. An AFOL might go for the Moria set if it had a Balrog, but parents don’t always value the same things as AFOLs. We need to keep the parents of kids interested for a theme to survive.
Derfel Cadarn Posted December 15, 2011 Posted December 15, 2011 I know very well why Lego would not do certain themes, I was just being light hearted. Excellent well put point Z, and one I have thought about. Some sets that Lego have produced have often made me wonder why a parent would choose it over something more obviously appealing. I really hope we do see some good 'instant buy' sets in this theme, but I fear there will be a few based on 'scenes' that will only be worth buying for the figs, as POTC suffered from this problem.

Fantu Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 I was going to Bookmark my photos on Rebrick.com and then I saw this... Not much for some, but means a lot for me.
kenobi8 Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 http://thelordoftherings.lego.com/en-us/default.aspx :D
Ceroknight Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 http://thelordoftherings.lego.com/en-us/default.aspx :D I take it back...this is a big surprise
lightningtiger Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Now that will screw up the disbelievers eh ? Okay, so now the moderators can remove the question mark and decide if this stays in Licensed or moves to Historic like POTC went to the pirate forum. Now we can try and work out the seven sets coming mid-year eh ?
Miss Kyle Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Someone get the oxygen bottle for Elander.
lightningtiger Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Someone get the oxygen bottle for Elander. You right 'Miss Kyle' he may pass out on the floor.....his dream has come true. I'll be interested in this theme only because I enjoyed the pirates flowing into POTC, as to now Kingdoms moving into LOTR.
Vindice Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Finally some confirmation. I take back all the negative comments and my hat has now been eaten! At least i can now stash away some of my budget from the new year to cover the ever increasing amount i will need for the summer!
lightningtiger Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 (edited) Yep, a lot of hats will be eaten tonight ! Reading the article, it's like the DC Comics deal....multi-year....that means Elander might get his huge collection of sets he's been wishing for. Edit - I forgot it also said 'ACTION FIGURES', perhaps a Hero Factory style of creation ? Edited December 16, 2011 by lightningtiger
Innos Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 In your face all naysayers and pesimists, in your face! It's one of the best presents that Lego could have made us, the only better one will be a year from now, when the actual sets come out.
Werlu Ulcur Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Another bottomless pit has been opened...
vexorian Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Meh, LEGO is selling out. Down with these many tons of licenses. Specially with something as intrascendent as the hobbit. Multi-year deal? LEGO may as well be renamed MOVIELOL. It was enough of an annoyance that this year's Kingdom's and Alien Conquest sets weren't offered by any retailer around here. Rather the tons of Starwars and Harry Potter uninspired trash full of over-detailed peach skinned figures.

Professor Flitwick Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 http://thelordoftherings.lego.com/en-us/default.aspx :D A little more to read: Link http://www.brickset....rticle/?ID=2077 http://thelordoftherings.lego.com/en-us/default.aspx Lord of the Rings, and Marvel/DC in the same year...? Ouch! My wallet just bit me!
AngryChair Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 I happily stand corrected on this as I never thought this would happen. Now off to sell a kidney to afford all this and the Marel/DC range..!
Nicker Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Check it out http://www.brickset.com/news/article/?ID=2077 Even though I'm a huge LOTR fan I'm not very excited about this news especially if these new licensed themes replace the Kingdoms line. I sure hope we get at least one more year of the Kingdoms line or at least have a handful of of castle themed sets released every year still.
narbilu Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 (edited) The first toys Lego plans to produce will hit store shelves in June, tied to "Lord of the Rings," with new construction sets planned for the weeks leading up to the Dec. 14 bow of "An Unexpected Journey." WOOHOO... gonna save up some money for that... and june is earlier than all my wishes could have hoped for Now we can start a seperate thread on set speculations :) Edited December 16, 2011 by narbilu
eiker86 Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 This is so good news and a great Christmas present =)
soccerkid6 Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Ah, June just happens to be my birthday. How appropriate, personally I am with the nonfleshie group but am still looking forward to this theme. Being a big fan of the books.
nicoga3000 Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 I'm not a big LOTR fan, but I can only imagine how beautiful these sets will be. I'll be picking a few of these up for sure!
