The only real surprise to me is the June date and the start with LotR sets. I thought it would be Hobbit and Novemberbish.

Still... very nice to see the official bit!

I am pleased. I really liked the Minimates line of Lord of the Rings block figures and always felt that the line would be a good fit for their C3 block building concept that they used for the DC Minimates.

I do agree with the worry stated here in this thread that fan expectations will be too high for what Lego currently produce for their licensed themes. I think the POTC sets were seen quite negatively - high prices for sets that only partially resembled their source material (or not at all), and I am reluctant to go overboard with the excitement until we see pics of the kind of thing that Lego will be producing.

It's a great line for minifig enthusiasts, though. Plenty of cool figures. One regret I had with the Minimates line was that they never got a chance to complete the Fellowship.

Well yeah, but it is a license. :P

And yeah history forum would be logical, but then the forum name would need a change since I don't recall reading about the One Ring in my textbook.

Either way. :P

I was being a little sarcastic and you proved my point, PotC after pirates of the pirate forum makes sense. Lord of the Rings is not historically accurate so the history forum doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

With that being said, those are my thoughts, with the license actually being announced, it's up tho the Admins and moderators to decide where it goes.

Licenses usually come out early, which makes sense. They will be plenty of previews and hype for the movie 3 month prior plus licenses last longer than 3 months so they will still be taking full advantage of the movie publicity and even better some customers will already have bought the sets so it will be easier to keep up with the demand come movie time.

I truly can't describe how excited I am for this.

This is amazing news for me, and I knew the people who brought up the rumours would get it right.

I mean, 3 people somehow 'confirming' it can't be coincidental lying!

Amazing, amazing.. just amazing. Truly can't wait.

Heck yes. This will be one heck of an awesome year: a group of great Star Wars sets in the first part, and this in the second.

My bank account is already crying, I can hear it now.

I must say that ever since the Castle theme emerged, I've been hoping for this: I can now make up for my lack of any Castle sets by getting into this.

Lord of the Rings is one of my favourite film-from-book series, alongside Harry Potter, and I for one am thrilled that they're making sets from it at long last! :cry_happy:

I'm just wondering if they're going to have any games made for this theme as they have done for Pirates, Star Wars, and Potter.

Probably not, but this would just be absolutely epic.

Looking at the list you write, and the knowledge that another Lego Batman game will be launched soon, a Lego LotR game will be the next logical step.

Ah, June just happens to be my birthday. How appropriate, personally I am with the nonfleshie group but am still looking forward to this theme. Being a big fan of the books.

Plus, there are a lot of nonfleshie minifigures to be released.

Well... wow. *huh**oh2* I am colossally excited, while at the same time my bank account is screaming in agony.

This is another licensed theme that could go on for years and years, though I doubt it will, if only because after the second Hobbit movie there probably won't be new movies and such every so often to sustain it, which TLG appears to want if they're to continue a license. Star Wars has run continuously since 1999, but it's had movies in '99, 2002, 2005 and 2008, with a new TV series picking up later that year, and scads of novels, comics and games in the years in between. Indiana Jones had a very respectable four waves, but the last sets were released a little over a year after the last movie came out, and the theme went dormant as there was relatively little "fresh" Indy material yet and no concrete news about a fifth movie or something (I'm hoping Indy returns to both the big screen and the toy store LEGO aisle!).

But in terms of the wealth of material already existing, this could be a huge theme. Even if TLG restricts themselves to doing just sets based on the movies, there's no small amount of material there to work with - once the second Hobbit movie comes out, the total running time of the live-action Middle-earth series will probably exceed that of all the combined live-action Star Wars material. They could easily keep LotR/The Hobbit (I propose just referring to the overall collective theme as "LEGO Middle-earth," for succinctness' sake) going for several years, should they so choose.

That's not to say I think they will. I do think we'll get at least a good, solid two years' worth of sets, though, and possibly more.

This is what they always do, though. In recent history we've seen it with Cars, Toy Story and Indiana Jones. They obtain a license and release sets based on classic material. The sets based on the new movie come out around six months later. They originally did this with the Star Wars license, although there were two years (I think) before the new trilogy was released. That's a different story because of how many new films were coming out and the license was contracted over a number of years. It seems to be their business model when obtaining new licenses that have new movies coming out.

Goodbye money... it was nice knowing you. Goodbye space in my house... nice knowing you too.

Hello LEGO Lord of the Rings!

:wall:

Ouch!

LEGO, I love to hate you and hate to love you! You're drilling quite a hole in my budget with those awesome new lines like Heroes or LotR! But, nah! Isn't it awesome?!

I feel rather worried for Castle though, but taking into account that Kingdoms was (IMHO) a very weak line it's good to have it for a change. Not to mention new fleshie heads!

Good day, ladies and gentlemen! ) :classic:

YEAH!!

I heard this rumor from a lego employee in a german Brand Store, and now its confirmed.

Since the rumor I heard came from a lego employee I should have known that this will be true, but it seemed too good to be true!!!

FANTASTIC NEWS!!!!

Very excited for this, less for the minifigs, besides the orcs, but more for the sets. I hope they do a good job of say Helms Deep, Minas Tirith, Orthanc. THere is just so many opportunities. Also could definately see a video game for this similar to Star Wars/Indiana Jones.

Multiple orgasm!!! I just shouted in my whole neighborhood. I love you Lego, and I promise to spend $10,000 on LotR and Hobbits! Damn damn damn, am I dreaming?!?

All I can say is "wow." :oh:

And while I really wanted this theme I was always worried about how well they'd do it.... and now we already have the answer to how they will do the ring!

That single picture makes me so incredibly excited... it's a brilliant LEGO Frodo. I realize it's a computer rendering, but I also don't doubt it's based on the actual figure.

Now I am excited!

Let the conversation turn from "if" to "what" now... have at it!

Congratulations to all of the devoted fans that have been begging and pleading and contemplating this license for months and months on end. This is your day, and you deserve to bask in it.

Personally I'm a fan of the books, and obviously a huge fan of Lego, but for some reason this isn't rattling me to the core as it probably should. Although that'll probably change the first time I see an official Nazgul minifig...
