Lovely box art!

Stange that Bombur and Balin seem to be without weapons though (considering Bombur is shown to have a meat cleaver and ladel as weapons, and both already have molds)

I agree that it would be foolish to end this LOTR end of the license, but maybe sales have stagnated a little. Looking on Amazon Best Sellers at #35 is Mines of Moria and the next is #51 with Gandalf Arrives. So only two sets in the top 51, whereas the remainder is almost exclusively Friends and Ninjago. So it is possible that isn't an indicator of overall sales since I don't know store numbers or S@H numbers, but that doesn't look too promising. The rest are #61 Shelob, #83 Uruk-Hai Army (which is surprising to me), and then #93 Helm's Deep rounding out the top 100 LEGO sets.

Last week when Battle for Helm's Deep was around $100 on Amazon it was at the 25th spot. Now that it is $115 that seems to have dramatically decreased it's sales/rank, while Mines of Moria is now almost 20$ off and has gone up like 50 spots.

At any rate it's hard to tell what sales actually look like over the long term. It does seem like Friends and Ninjago dominate the sales, but I don't think that's really a surprise to anyone. LotR seems to be doing well enough, especially considering nothing has come out to support the line in nearly 10 years. If sales are still slow after the Hobbit film comes out, and the LotR video game than we might be in trouble. But with no movie, no game, no cartoon... nothing to support LotR at the current moment, I think it's a little unfair to expect huge sales.

Where does that boxart comes from? If it is real it looks great :classic::thumbup:

It's real, it uses the same design as all lisenced hobbit movie toys.

Its from some random german website.

I just wondering why LEGO does not provide some small battle pack sets?

If I remember referring to the "old classic" castle line from 1984 to 1990, there were listet many small sets which I would buy multiple times. Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit are Army Building Themes! Those themes does need many army building sets like the old classic castle battle sets.

Why LEGO does not provide more sets, which we would buy multiple times? For example some creator sets including some usefull soldiers (which we would need multiple times).

There can be any number of reasons. The biggest being terms and requirements of the license. Typically in cases where Lego does not seem to be offering straight up "Battlepacks" it will come back to an issue in the license. Lego licenses for construction sets. If a competing company holds a license for "action figures" it greatly limits their ability to create minifig exclusive sets. Now with that said, They normally do manage to create a few 4 fig sets with a small construction piece that come in at a lower price point than uruk Hai Army. They tried to do two different things with that set. Both be an army builder and be an expansion set for Helms Deep. I'm not sure it was a complete success as such.

Another point is, why are some characters only included in books, video games, ect. ?? :wall:

Sorry, but if I see things like that, then I don't want to LEGO.

lego's license is for the Peter Jackson movies as source only. They cannot use subjects as described in or exclusive to the books. The Tolkien estate is notorious for going after anyone and everyone that goes anywhere near that license. The same with Video Games. They would need a seperate license for each game / publisher, and then have to deal with the Tolkien estate regarding the source for the games license. (As an example Turbine's "Lord of the Rings Online" MMO is licensed from the Tolkien estate, not the movies. Any sets based on that game would require a license from the estate.)

And where are the big exclusive sets? Kindly note, that this theme is closer to "an adult theme". The adults were really happy if they would see a big Orthanc Tower or a beauty Rivendell set.

They have obviously thought about them. In the picture of the design room that has been posted all over EB in the past few weeks you can see what looks like a large impressive prototype or "sketch model" of one of the towers on a shelf in the back. It is also likely that a Rivendell set is destined to better capitalize on the Hobbit movies. It plays a prominent role in both series, and would get a stronger marketing boost by corresponding to a new movie release.

And regarding to the Elves. Where are they? Where are the "nice to have" elf armies?

We may or may not see elf armies. It will be a factor of cost to produce (complicated printed head piece, etc) vs perceived sales. Personally I agree with you that they would do well. I am betting that we will see more of the elves corresponding to the second Hobbit movie.

Also keep this in mind... In stretching out the single book The Hobbit to three full movies, Peter Jackson has added in a whole secondary side story that was never in the original book. It has been strongly indicated that this story will include many of the characters previously seen in LotR who did not appear in The Hobbit book (Legolas, Aragorn, Rivendell elves in battle against the Necromancer, etc). Lego has some access to the production designs and has a far better idea of what is coming then we do. They will be selecting sets to correspond and gain benefit from the upcoming movies.

And regarding to the Hobbit civilians. Where - are - they?? What is about Hobbiton?

:yoda: Yoda would say: "Much to do, you still have"

Civilian Hobbits? I am not sure that there is that deep a clamoring for sets based around "My old Gaffer"? As much as we AFOL's love the civilian figures and obscure characters, they really don't tend to be a huge driving force in the realm of Lego sales. The best example of this is the wonderful 7189 Mill Village Raid set, which while almost everything we AFOL's claim we really want in a Castle set, was not a great seller compared to most others. In the case of peasants and civilians it seems that a little goes a long way. Now on the positive side, Of all the possible subjects in lotR and The Hobbit, civilian Hobbits are probably the absolute easiest to MOC up yourself. Short legs + pretty much any period torso + pink head and hands + almost any hair + pitchfork or beer = Hobbit.

I could see these sets doing well.

:classic:

Especially if the warg set is 40$ not 60$.

If you buy the wargs people would use them for The two towers. Also Lego will probably do the spider set for $20.

These if released and Lotr would be cool because certain themes/locations/minifigs could be used for both.

I cannot wait until June 2013. Gondor is MUST.Oliphaunt and witch king demise.

Set names and US prices.

79000 Mystery of the Ring-12.99 Gollum and Bilbo

79001 Fleeing from the Mirkwood Spiders-Bilbo Definitely 19.99

79002 Attack of the Wargs-30.00 1-2 Wargs and maybe an EAGLE maybe.

79003 An Unexpected Gathering

79004 Escape in the Barrels-79.99

79010 The Orc King-99.00

There is no way that soon the pictures will come out. December 1 70 days away not Febuary like the star wars sets.

Well I'm not sure about the pic sets but why almost everyone here is betting that the set pics will be realesed after Dec 1?I'm sure the sets will show up in stores somewere around November or ebay and I still dont trust the rumored list, there are many scenes in the movie that are not included in the book like the Radgast scene,I personaly expect a set with him.

I believe it's more than a rumor list now, so many people have seen the retailers catalogue at this point.

Ordinarily I'd agree with you, but since this is a movie tie-in line and my experience is that stores are better about street dates for those. Some might leak, but I doubt it will be widespread. I am surprised that TLG hasn't released photos yet, but my guess there is October when they roll out the Winter line.

The trailer shows off, goblins, goblin town, wargs, an eagle... So technicaly the goblin and warg set from lego shouldn't have a reason to be kept secret longer x]

They were rabbits/hares/jackrabbits, not hengehogs.

Oh, I see it now. I got confuse because he holds a headgehog later. But I want his sledge anyway.
