Masked Builder Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 I cannot wait for this theme! This is, hopefully, going to be LEGOs best work if they do it right. Of course I'll need to get all the main characters. *sigh* There goes my master plan. Maybe I can pass on the Superheroes sets.... Nah. At least "The Clone Wars" sets seem to be winding down.
Blondie-Wan Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Although 14 figs would be fantastic, if memory serves, there were only 5 ringwraiths at Weathertop. I believe the other 4 joined them later. Except for huge sets like the Death Star or Millennium, Lego tends not to give us every character that was present at certain scenes in licensed sets. I'd honestly expect maybe 2 ringwraiths, 2 hobbits and Aragorn in an Amon Sul set. Yep, especially since even that huge, elaborate $500 Millennium Falcon still didn't have all the characters associated with it (though probably mainly because it didn't have a playable/displayable interior), and the Death Star could certainly have accommodated more stormtroopers and Imperial officers. TLG tends to be sparing with minifigures, alas. I'd dearly have loved for 7199 The Temple of Doom to have come with more than one "generic" Thuggee minion, for example - it's tough to build armies of figures included only in a single $90 set that has only one of them - but there you go.
CorneliusMurdock Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Collectible minifigures? Could they mean battlepacks by this? I'm thinking they mean that the minifigures will be seen as collectible rather than that they'll make Collectible Minifigures for the theme. But I could be wrong. Maybe the licensers made a minifig line part of the deal. Can I just say that now that there's no doubt of this theme happening, I'm more than a little surprised at the hate being thrown at it from various members. Not just disappointment but hate. I realize this is a big change in Lego's line up next year and that things don't look good for Kingdom's continuation, but this is BIG news. LOTR is THE fantasy series of all fantasy series. I wonder if the AFOL community had been this organized back when Star Wars debuted whether there would have been the same backlash against it...
Derfel Cadarn Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Finally, don't have to keep any secrets any more!!! The sets look interesting from what I've seen, but won't know till proper high res pics are released. Certain members wont be going round and round anymore now!! Worst kept secret, but a very welcome addition to the Lego themes.
TheDarkness Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Like I don't spend enough on Lego as it is. Must have series for me

Sam892 Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 why does next year look so expensive!!! *sigh* this theme sounds cool but i hope gollum gets a new mold he would look weird being a normal figure with stuby legs. he needs to look skinny and i don't think he would as a normal fig. with the collectable minifigures i hope they put some of the mane characters in but also i see this as a great way to for some secondary characters to make an appearence that lego may not want to include in the sets. i also hope in the collecable minifig packs we get some variations of some of the main minifigs. like for example a rarer one could be invisible frodo which is the frodo made from transparent parts. or perhaps boromir with arrows in his chest.
Darth Caedus Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Best line ever. Been waiting for this since December 2001. BUY EVERYTHING
The_Chosen_1 Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 This is THE BEST THEME to come in a long time!!! And that's when I thought Lego could never top themselves after announcing DC and Marvel!! The LOTR/Hobbit theme has so much potential. I can't wait to see the initial offerings!
CMP Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 :wub_drool: Is it wrong that the thing I'm most excited about right now is Frodo's hair?
Derfel Cadarn Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 If I remember rightly I think some set pictures were leaked a month ago, very grainy and hard to really tell what was what. Then again, they could have been fakes, but they looked legit. Who knows and who cares, always best to wait and see the official decent images. Oh well, I can now sit back and enjoy watching everyone moan and complain about how the sets are not accurate to the movies and moaning because Minas Tireth is not a huge 3000 piece set You just know that's gonna happen.
CMP Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Judging by the size of the CGI One Ring, it'll fit around the hand. But it'll be one friggin' big ring.
Vindice Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 I also wonder why this issue of fleshie vs. yellow tones keep popping out of the discussion. Is the "Rule: Yellow = non-licensed themes, Flesh = licensed themes" really that hard to understand? Really? no need to be like that about it, I think the point here is that with another license replacing a core line that there is a feasible point that we could see yellow heads become extinct. Depends what the consumer wants doesn't it. Is THAT hard to understand?? I think as regards sets we will see all the fellowship split over several sets. Wethertop is a good scene that would see frodo, Aragorn and a couple of wraiths only, as they are core cahracters to the scene. Balins tomb would be a good payset with minimal scenery, a couple of orcs, troll, Legolas and Gimli, i don't see the council of Elrond, just wouldn't excite the kids i don't think which is a shame. Amon Hen maybe for a nother couple of bits of scenery plus Boromir, Uruks and maybe either Aragorn or Merry and Pippin.

But I could be wrong. Maybe the licensers made a minifig line part of the deal. I don't think it would've said in the press release 'information about the sets and collectible minifigures from both collection…' if they were only referring to minifigures in the sets.
Flipz Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 (edited) Yes. Win! And I guess this means that The Hobbit film is FINALLY coming out! I agree about Council of Elrond/Rivendale, but I really hope LEGO includes "alternate building instructions" with the sets or LEGO Club Magazine building instructions. Darth Hagrid Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Judging by the size of the CGI One Ring, it'll fit around the hand. But it'll be one friggin' big ring. To me it looks a bit like the Angel Food Cake of the rings...

Brings up an interesting question, are LOTR fans even more geeky and protective of their beloved story than SW fans?! There will need to be a good dose of realism for them as there won#t likely be any UCS style Minas Tirith until this license has achieved a good few years of excellent sales. derfel will you be doing a nice MOC of the village of Bree or even Meduseld?
fred67 Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 So Cwetqo and others were right after all... but could the partial set list that Cwetqo posted in August have been legit too? Gandalf's Arrival (Hobbit or LotR; personally I'd wager for the former?), Weathertop, Balin's Tomb and Helm's Deep mostly sound quite propable scenes for Lego to use. But apart from maybe Helm's Deep none of the sound very building-oriented. It's true... we'll have to wait and see, but most of the sets we could consider them making are either really small, figure oriented sets scenes, or these giant epic structures. There are certainly exceptions, but LOTR has too many characters and too much walking through the wilderness with various "encounters" (I hate to use D&D sounding terminology). I can't but feel sad for the passing of Kingdoms. It was truly a great theme and more or less the reason why I returned to Lego collecting. Well, we're certainly a group with varied tastes and desires for what LEGO will make, and we'll never all agree on what LEGO "should" do. My interests in various themes have waxed and waned over the years, and I discovered a few things about my irrational exuberance at some of the sets and themes... I won't go into details, but I started collecting castle during the fantasy theme, and when it ended I didn't think much of it (except sad they didn't do elves), and just started happily buying kingdoms... but it just wasn't as much fun for me. I realized that my attraction to that castle line was actually rooted in my love of fantasy in general, and the LOTR in particular. I stopped buying Kingdoms... I'm just not into it. I'm not even going to buy a single joust set. I've been championing all through this thread that I would like LOTR, but would be ecstatic at Fantasy 2 (and even see some benefits of it over LOTR). The "plain old" castle themes just don't do it for me. The one thing that really worries me about this is if lego fails to capture the epicness (not a real word) and size of some of the lotr sets. For instance Minas Tirith. I feel like it will be harder to do compared to star wars. Agreed... like Derfel mentioned, there's going to be a lot of moaning and groaning at TLG not releasing some epic-ly huge sets, but I don't think you can blame people, either. LOTR is an epic movie with epic structures... just think of the Argonath... it'll take some LEGO/LOTR nerd like me... but with a LOT MORE TIME AND MONEY to do something like that to minifigure scale. While I've defended that a theme doesn't require a lot of vehicles to be successful, I will readily admit it makes set making easier.... SW is definitely easier for TLG than LOTR will be.
Flipz Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 derfel will you be doing a nice MOC of the village of Bree or even Meduseld? This wasn't addressed to me, but I think that either at a brick convention or via LDD RCB we totally need to do a minifig-scale build of Middle-Earth as a whole. Obviously, distances between locations would be SEVERELY shortened, but I think it could be done. Perhaps the look of the whole could be a "map of Middle-Earth," with models/giant viginettes of the indiviidual scenes and locations being placed on their location on the map?
vexorian Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Collectible minifigures? Could they mean battlepacks by this? Nah I doubt it, they had similar worder in the Super heroes announcement and there were no battle packs or individual figures for sale. If they are not including the figures exclusively in the sets, how would they expect to sell them?
CMP Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 If they are not including the figures exclusively in the sets, how would they expect to sell them? Put all of them in blind packaging and sell them in sets of 16? Vexorian's right, it's just the wording. I highly doubt they'll sell them individually.
Jedi master Brick Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 LoTR is good for me. Good chances for minifigures and new pieces. People who man about the sets, soon you will have the minifigures to build a Moc. And LOTR=
KotZ Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 Yes! This is awesome! Finally, we can get what we had always wanted. My only fear is that we're going to expect too much from the line. I'm scared we will get only small locations instead of nice big locations or useful things from the series.
SpiderSpaceman Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 holee freakin cow. Wonder if we'll finally get smoking pipes. and I think short legs deserve a redesign now. Ents and balrogs and fortresses and towers and siege machines and hobbit holes and mines and oh laws, better go make my own stuff before there's none left to make.
