Kliq Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 I am sure I will greatly enjoy the sets when they come out, but like with all licensed themes, will be sad about the flesh tones. The orcs and other creatures will not be as bad. Hopefully I could just swap out the heads and hands with the classic yellow. (Unless of course there is flesh on the torso )
Nightshroud99 Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 Yes thirteen minfigures is probably bit much for LEGO to do for a set, I got out of hand with the possibilities there But who knows, if Hogwarts had twelve, thirteen could be ok. Especially since several will be soldier clones. Now if we scrapped the elves and Berzerker Uruk like Nicemarmot said, the figures would be: Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Theoden and a couple Uruk Hai warriors. However, I do think there has to be some generic good soldiers like the Rohirrim, otherwise the set will be kind of one-sided If the Orc forge contained Saruman like Nicemarmot also suggested, then that would be really great. But it depends on how big a set the Orc forge will be...
On Stranger Tides Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 AM I the only one who just hopes for a Variety of orc and Uruk colors? Heads? Torsos? Expressions? Armor? I really don/t want A million Orks and Uruk-hai with the same face
NiceMarmot Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 AM I the only one who just hopes for a Variety of orc and Uruk colors? Heads? Torsos? Expressions? Armor? I really don/t want A million Orks and Uruk-hai with the same face I totally agree. But unfortunately, as far as torsos go, I think we're likely to only get one orc and one Uruk-hai (plus maybe one Uruk-hai leader torso). TLG will have no problem doing three slightly different Frodo torsos, but it seems that when they do generic baddies, they're just that - generic. However I would expect to get a few different heads with different expressions.
wesker Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 This is fantastic news! Hopefully the Mines of Moria and Helms Deep are getting the Hogwarts/Hoth treatment with multiple sets down the line rather than just the one. I'm really hopeful for some battle packs too. Like Star Wars the different armies played a big part in the trilogy. As for the minifigures my predictions are: 9469 Gandalf Arrives Frodo (Shire) and Gandalf the Grey. Possibly Bilbo as well. 9470 Shelob Attacks Frodo (Shelob's Lair) Sam and Gollum. Shelob will be brick built. 9471 Uruk-hai Army Hard to tell based on the vague set name. If its from the ending of FOTR then Boromir and Lurtz, if its from TTT then Merry and Pippin. 1-2 Uruk Hai thrown in on top. 9472 Attack on Weathertop Aragorn (Strider) and some Ringwraiths. Possibly Arwen since there's not many other sets that could include her, and because we probably won't see many females in this line. 9473 The Mines of Moria Gimli, cave troll, 1-2 goblin orcs and either Merry/Pippin/Boromir depending on who's in the Uruk Hai set. 9474 The Battle of Helm's Deep Aragorn (Helms Deep) Legolas, King Theoden and a mix of Rohirim and Uruk Hai. Possibly Eowyn depending on whether we get Arwen or not, but seeing how there's several other sets she could be included in the future I'm betting she won't be in this. 9476 The Orc Forge Assuming its a large set I'm going with Saruman and newborn Lurtz. Wormtongue could be thrown in but he'll probally be saved for a Tower of Orthanc or Golden Hall set. BTW anyone notice we're missing a 9475?
Henchmen4Hire Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 9475 is the sexy Boromir/Faramir battle pack which includes them, a ton of weapons, and alternate bare-chested torsos.
Wolvarie Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 Good range of sets off the bat. Have no problems with them being fleshies, in fact more the merrier, would however like to see a wider range of flesh tones. The Moc I'm working on at the mo will have flesh tones from brown to yellow and everything inbetween. To expect a full blown super detailed set of Helm's deep is just not going to happen, just for the fact that it won't sell to the average consumer in the market. Sure everyone here will be selling off body parts to fund their lego spends in 2012 and I feel that lego has in the past 2-3 year really beginning to tap into the AFOL market in a big way and this is just another pointer to that fact. As for this being the end of the castle line..don't think so. The Kingdom Joust set that I'm waiting to hit Bricklink has a new black falcons knight and I'm hoping this will bring a third faction into the lion and the dragon factions. I really like how Lego seems to be looking at what the community is coming up with in their builds and adding the detail into their bigger sets. They have brought out some interesting wider interest sets such as the Mill raid and the older market set. There is enough market for both. When do we see some pictures??
Miss Kyle Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 (edited) They can do whatever they like, really. As long as I get an Eowyn minifigure. has a differing opinion Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 Oh boy, could there maybe be a little bit of water, and some moss, and dare I dream, a bush too!? I completely forgot about the possabilities of water and moss! Perhaps, maybe, A PRINTED MOSSY ROCK???
Brickadeer Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 Wow, I'm impressed. I guess that besides Star Wars, this is the biggest license Lego could get. I'm pretty curious what they will made of it.

You wouldn't think there will be two many female figs Eowyn, Galadriel and Arwen you would think will all get a look in and maybe a few female characters from the Hobbit maybe the one that is being made for Kate from LOST. Collectable figures...can't see why not, flog it for all its worth, they will make a packet out of it. Aargh Lego stop it you will send me broke!

"Collectible Minifigures": I think you can those special minifigures compare with Star Wars. For example could Sauron look like the special chrome Darth Vader. Other minifigures could be special printed. Maybe will LEGO produce for licenses a separate "Minifigure Series"? I've no idea, but it sounds very interesting. EDIT: Or LEGO will produce special impulse sets. "9476 The Orc Forge" could be a special impulse set where we find so an special "collectible minifigure". Edited December 18, 2011 by Elander
Khorne Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 This is great news! I love the LotR movies. I do keep my hopes for this theme tempered though. I see lots of people here expect HUGE sets and loads of minifigs. As has been said before, I don't think that'll be the case. I do feel kind of sad that this theme will replace the normal Kingdoms/Castle line. That means castle fans will have to buy the more expensive licensed sets if they want to fullfil their Castle needs. The minifigs will be great, no doubt, but I think the sets themselves will be rather disappointing and will serve only as mere backdrops. And, as has been said before, I also hope not too much flesh will be seen on the minifigs so I can use the parts combined with yellow faces.
Professor Flitwick Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 (edited) I've tried to fit as many realistic figures into my predictions: 9469 Gandalf Arrives Bilbo and Gandalf. His cart, and maybe a bit of the Bag End/The Shire. 9470 Shelob Attacks Shelob herself, with Frodo and Gollum. Maybe a bit of the caves/stairs, and possible Sam, though I doubt it. 9471 Uruk-hai Army Either a battle back (four Uruk-hai (likely all look-a-likes from nameless characters, but memorable characters from the film, e.g The Torch/explosive guy) and... ladders?), or Amon Hen, with Lurtz, Boromir, a few Urks, and maybe Pippin or Merry. 9472 Attack on Weathertop Some of the ruins, featuring Aragon, Frodo, the Witch King, and maybe a few other Ringwraiths/Hobbits. 9473 The Mines of Moria Probably Balins tomb, featuring Gandalf, Pippin (with a well!), Legolas, Gimli, and a few Orcs/skeletons. 9474 The Battle of Helm's Deep Likely a long wall, with a few play features here and there. King Theoden, Eomer, Aragon, Legolas, Gimli, a few Urks. 9476 The Orc Forge Everyone seems to think it's the Uruk hai factory, but wouldn't that be Uruk-hai forge? My guess is that it's the One Rings forge. Smallest set of the wave, featuring a small forge, Sauron, and Orc, and maybe Elrond/Isildur. Maybe 9475 could be a Rivendel set, with Arwen and Elrond? Don't forgot Alfred Molina also played Shiek Amar in Prince of Persia. And Warrick Davies too! (Flitwick, Griphook, Wicket, and Wald!) Edited December 18, 2011 by Professor Flitwick

The theme has been fighting for shelfspace even now against such more popular and/or more heavily marketed lines as PotC and Ninjago, and at least in Finland it has been losing mostly. Against the combined forces of LotR, PotC (if it really is continuing, as has been claimed), SW, Ninjago... there's no victory. Already when the Joust set was unveiled I interpreted the Black Falcon knight as a nice and rare treat for the AFOLs (not to say that kids wouldn't like it too), not as a herald of a new faction. It seems I was correct.
TheDoctor Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 Well this topic has finally encouraged me to join the discussion! So far i think wesker's prediction for the minifigs seems about right. What interests me is that there's only so many vehicles in middle earth - and we all know of TLG love of vehicles What i think will happen is prehaps, aside from Gandalfs cart, that we will see numerous brick built monsters instead of vehicles with minifigs included! Like the mines of moria- a brick built troll/balrog with minifigs. As for helms deep, i can see somthing similar to the current Hogwarts set where multiple ones are released but able to connect so that different parts of helms deep from the different films could be joined together. Either way, i have been losing sleep over this I hope that the ring is a chrome gold ring and not just a 1x1 round tile. For such a key part of the series, yoiu would of thought it justifyed a new piece

General Magma Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 The Orc Forge is most likely the factory near Orthanc. Might as well take place during The Last March of the Ents. Here are some of my own ideas to add to the speculation: 9469 Gandalf Arrives will probably include Gandalf, his cart, plus both Frodo and Bilbo baggins. This Frodo figure would be the version without a coat. Perhaps a part of Bilbo's house in Bag End as well. 9470 Shelob Attacks Might come with minifig Frodo wrapped up (just similar to the collectible minifig mummy's printings), Sam Gamgee with Sting and the Light of Earendil, plus either a brick-built or a molded Shelob, some rocks and other surroundings, spider webs and who knows, they might include Gorbag and another orc. 9471 Uruk-hai Army This would be a set of Amon-hen, with Boromir, Aragorn, Merry and Pippin, Lurtz and 2 Uruk-hai in the armory they had in Amon-hen. It would come with some buildings as ruins, and a good amount of trees and other plants. More Uruk-hai would be better, but I had to remain realistic, although they might just throw in a few more and exclude either Merry or Pippin. 9472 Attack on Weathertop Comes with a filled base plate, and on it we can find rocks, some ruins etc. to resemble the place from the movie. The statue where wounded Frodo lays would be there as well. This may be surrounded by some plants. The minifigs included would be Frodo, Sam Gamgee, Merry and/or Pippin, Aragorn with a torch, and 2-3 Nazgûl. Maybe some of the hobbits would be excluded since that's quite alot of figures for, presumably, such a small set. But if, for example, Merry is in set 9471, then they might as well add Pippin to this one. But hey, let's hope TLC decides to give us the glory of small sets with many fantastic minifigs. 9473 The Mines of Moria This is most likely Balin's tomb, with some ruins, the coffin, a door leading to another part of the mines and some pillars around there. The minifigs would be Frodo, Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli and 2-3 goblins, maybe either Merry or Pippin, perhaps both or none, plus a brick-built cave troll. 9474 The Battle of Helm's Deep Comes with the Deeping Wall, attached to the castle itself, featuring the gates, as well as the gates at the side (dwarf-tossing), barrels with spears etc. on the top of the castle, with ladders for the Uruk-hai. Included minifigs would be Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, King Theoden, Haldir, 2 elves, 2 soldiers of Rohan, 3 Uruk-hai soldiers (2 with Uruk scimitars and shields, one with a long pike), 1 Uruk-hai berserker with torch and 1 Uruk-hai crossbowman. The wall has a play feature to become broken in the middle, with one or two spiky mines. 9475 Encounter with Gollum Comes with Sam Gamgee, Frodo Baggins and Gollum. (rather a new mold for the head and the body parts, can't have a fat Gollum..) Option 1 for components: some rocks on plates with a few dark tan flower stems on them, a large rock wall for Gollum to climb on and Frodo and Sam's "sleeping bags". (Just some plates with cloth items on them) Option 2 is the same thing, but with everythong on a, say, 12x12 or 16x16 baseplate rather than standing loosely. (9475 is just a thought of mine and made-up, but I figured it would be great for a set because we get the set with Gollum's first proper scene and the first events from The Two Towers take place here, the real 9475 set is unknown) 9476 The Orc Forge - Option 1 Will take place during the Attack of the Ents, in Isengard. Would come with 3 orcs, Merry, Pippin and a brick-built Treebeard. Maybe another brick-built Ent, and some rocks for throwing. Other than that we have some parts of the Orc Forge - some ladders and wooden scaffolds, perhaps some kind of wall and a way for Ents to stand on the surface, with the fights going on around it and some chaos caused by the Ents within the Orc Forge. The scaffold (or scaffolds) has a play feature to collapse/break. This is the less likely option of the two. 9476 The Orc Forge - Option 2 Comes with Saruman, 2 orcs, 2 new-born Uruk-hai and some of their loose armory and weapons. A scaffold, and some sort of smithy with a play feature that allows you to "create" the Uruk-hai's equipment. Could also come with several other components, such as a play feature to have the Uruk-hai "emerge" from their "eggs". Just my two cents. ~ General Magma

It seems I was correct. I can only talk about here in Oz the castle line is still very popular, but I see your point. I really have been liking the direction Castle has been taking over the past 18 months. Now whether or not it takes a hiatus while LEGO makes its millions out of LOTR and the Hobbit remains to be seen. Was hoping for a sheep to go with the goats from the Mill raid set. Can't see too much village life being represented in LOTR sets. I just hope they can bring the same sort of detail to new LOTR sets. Looking back I really think they were testing the waters a bit with the whole castle fantasy line, which at the time I thought was very LOTR like and it got me back into buying castle sets. Then when an elf came out in the minifig series and an evil dwarf the writing was on the wall. I've always tended to go towards buying castle sets for parts and using them to develop my own factions and with a Uruk-hai battle pack to suppliment my orc army the forces of good are in for a rocky ride.
wonkyeye Posted December 18, 2011 Author Posted December 18, 2011 Couldn't Gandalf Arrives be from Two Towers when he and Eomer arrive at Helms Deep?
daro Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 Maybe 9475 could be a Rivendel set, with Arwen and Elrond? for a Rivendell set. It would be a bonus if they made the start of the fellowship scene. but doubt we could get so many characters in one set
SpiderSpaceman Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 ACCESSORIES SPECULATIONS There must be new dedicated molds for Anduril and Sting, yeah? at least sting - seeing as the 'dagger of time' and blackbeard's cutlass got their own molds. several new unique beards? hat-hair specific combo molds like jack sparrow's (hopefully not too many, but I'm suspecting gandalf goes this route) couple of wizard staffs Robe arms with oh so loose wizardness? A Ninjago skeleton mold is the perfect base for a Gollum torso. Just fill in the gaps in the ribcage and a tiny bit of waist and that's him exactly. complete with loincloth. they really need to figure out a workaround for the no transparent minifigures

deskp Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 The prince of persia set Alamut already looks quite alot like helms deep so they should be able to design something really good for it! Do you guys think we will see more Lord of the rings sets after this wave? Or will they just keep doing hobbit sets after the movie is released.
Haltiamieli Posted December 18, 2011 Posted December 18, 2011 Do you guys think we will see more Lord of the rings sets after this wave? Or will they just keep doing hobbit sets after the movie is released. I'm sure we will, there's apparently not a single set based on the Return of the King yet... and that's the part that won gazillion Academy Awards etc, so there should be more than enough mass appeal. The Hobbit would have to be an unforeseen success to drive the original trilogy into oblivion.
