I'm sure we will, there's apparently not a single set based on the Return of the King yet... and that's the part that won gazillion Academy Awards etc, so there should be more than enough mass appeal. The Hobbit would have to be an unforeseen success to drive the original trilogy into oblivion.

Movie-wise Shelob's attack is based on RotK. Not book-wise, but this is a movie license after all.

There's also small possiblities that Gandalf's arrival and Orc forge are RotK sets. Gandalf could arrive to Minas Tirith with Peregrin and Orc Forge could be located in Mordor.

The press release did say it was a multi-year deal. At the very least we'll see a second LOTR wave next year, in between the two Hobbit movies.

Potentially though, considering the size of the LOTR fanbase, this could become a second Star Wars.

Ouch, how stupid of me! Goes to show that I'm mainly a book fan.

Love that art from the press release! Hope that's gonna be on the box but I am afraid real live is the way now for TLC, what makes sense from marketing point of view, but I personnaly liked the first cartoony SW box art a lot!

I am not sure if I'll be much interested in the huge sets, since it's mainly playsets and I prefer vehicles, but I am very curious about how this will turn out. I think TLC proofed that they can create great looking buildings and playsets. While PoP was the unloved peak in their creation skills, I have to admit that PotC sets were a bit of a lackluster. Still, I can see them turning this license into something beautiful! As a fan of all books and the first movie (didn't like the other 2 too much), I have to say I am very happy for 2012. Looks like a good year!

I understand the hesitation many have about LOTR LEGO. Higher prices and an end (probably) to kingdoms are both big downers  Guess I will be stocking up on the Joust set.

However, if LEGO designs these sets right (I think they will since they know how much potential money is riding on this theme) it is a very exciting time. We can all agree the mini figs, weapons, and armor will be amazing, and I am just going to assume the theme will sell well. In a way this is like a SW version for castle! We will be getting multiple waves per year for a long time. That for me personally is very exciting as I hate waiting an entire year for new castle sets.

My mind can only think of the ways I'd be able to use the new pieces into the HP theme.

With the One Ring, the Gaunt's ring.

With Shelob, probably a substitute for the two shameful Aragogs.

With Gandalf, Aberforth perhaps? Or an alternate version of Dumbledore.

With all the new hairpieces, beards, torsos and flesh heads, puff, too many ideas.

With the Troll, a Giant.

Then more unlikely things:

If Gandalf Arrives is based on the first film, then there could be some printed firework or even a new mold. That is, Weasley Wheezes.

I cannot wait for the first pictures!

Potentially though, considering the size of the LOTR fanbase, this could become a second Star Wars.

The thing about star wars is that they always has something going, tv series videogames comics books etc.

The hobbit/lotr wont have anything going for it after the last hobbit movie. so the interest in the licence will propably slow down.

I certainly would not mind if it continued for a while. I dont think this theme will be popular than what Harry potter was.

I doubt that very much at least on terms of longevity. Star wars has the 6 films + the 100 Clone Wars animated series + various games and an expanded universe. All of these have given Lego a myriad of characters, buildings and VEHICLES to base their sets on. LotR has only got the 5 films and in all honesty not that many characters and 0 vehicles in comparison to SW.

Lord of the Rings? Not many characters?

There are more than enough characters... and an awful lot of buildings, quite a few are iconic.

I still believe that this range will live through the 2 next movies, not further. Star Wars is much different and cannot be compared, it reached another level through at least two generations of fans.

LOTR is before everything some books with a quite huge base of fans, that made it to cinema and then became widely popular. But it is not yet as iconic as SW in terms of cinematography.

I'm happy that you don't find that the films have too many characters, as that's one of the most common complains I hear about them. I agree with the doubt of this theme getting as long run as the Star Wars though, there's very little chance of that. At least since the end of the prequel trilogy Star Wars has been first and foremost a merchandising franchise that exists to generate enough popularity that people keep buying toys and replicas and other stuff. LotR is still more a less "just" a successful film trilogy (based on a successful book trilogy) that faded into the background of public memory soon after the last film.

Not many characters when compared to SW.Not only that but the characters in LotR stay in the same outfit throughout the movies so Lego can't make variations of the same character either (unlike in SW).

The term "awful lot" that you use is quite excessive as well unless you are counting all the caves, forests and village houses. It does have a fair amount of buildings but then again how many buildings/castles can one buy/collect? I bet you that the iconic buildings that you mention will probably be released as exclusive (UCS) sets which means that they will cost quite a bit of money.

It will take quite a while before you will see a UCS LOTR set...

LEGO is about cars, trucks, ships, planes, spaceships, etc... so they will have to compensate with trees, rocks, horses, trees, rocks, small pieces of walls, trees, rocks....

About characters, they have some room here, tons of them as named ones, and more even as army ones.

To hell with Kingdoms, T he hobbit and LOTR is the greatest story ever told! No more star wars and hating on fleshies. Of course this won't be as long as SW, but as soon as the basement dwelling neckbeards and warhammer player get wind of this, you can bet they will run outa there house to the nearest store with an odd look and heavily sweaty making kids feel awkward as they buy the whole shelf.

I am for sure gonna buy all of these sets when they first hit the stores. I have been waiting for this theme for a decade, and I have never been so excited for a LEGO theme in my life!

When should we expect the teaser site to be up?

Couldn't Gandalf Arrives be from Two Towers when he and Eomer arrive at Helms Deep?

YES! Lots of blonde haired vikings on horses!

To hell with Kingdoms,

While I totally agree with you that LOTR is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, stories ever told, let's try to refrain from bashing other themes which might offend some of the fans of such product like, in this case Kingdoms. Shall we?

It(kingdoms) was not as good as castle if it would have continued... what I mean is this is LOTR, so why complain about fleshy for 30 pages and why talk about it obviously killing kingdoms. Lets talk about LOTR. :sadnew:

I agree that there is enough material for this license to continue just as long as SW. Not saying that it will, but it could if it wanted. As was mentioned earlier, LEGO can make several very different sets of the same thing (Hogwarts for instance).

The set list sounds decent. Most of the guesses as to what the sets will include seem spot on to me, and we all know this line is going to bring some amazing new pieces.

The two pieces I am hoping for the most are the lich kings mace and helm as seen in the third film. An army with that weaponry would look menacing to say the least.
