Gryphon Ink Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 I remember that the appendixes of LOTR (The book) say that only Finarfin's people had blonde hair and other elves (including all the races, I suppose) were dark-haired. Where is told that Thranduil is blonde? I don't remember that, The Hobbit maybe? In the Hobbit, the Flies and Spiders chapter: "at the head of a long line of feasters sat a woodland king with a crown of leaves upon his golden hair."
Fives Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 In the Hobbit, the Flies and Spiders chapter: "at the head of a long line of feasters sat a woodland king with a crown of leaves upon his golden hair." And so it would make sense that Legolas is blonde. Also, just because Legolas and Thranduil are blonde does not mean the rest of the Mirkwood elves are. If I am not mistaken, I believe that Thranduil and Legolas come from the strand of elves known as the Silvan elves, and are Nora's closely related to the elves that had already been living near Mirkwood. This means that, when we get Hobbit sets with the elves, we may see more dark elf hair than blonde, which would be nice, seeing as the elves of Rivendell are less relevant to LOTR than the Mirkwood elves are to The Hobbit.
Dwellington Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 I think the bulk of this depends on how the Elves of Mirkwood are portrayed in the film. Peter Jackson came up with "dark hair for Rivendell, blonde hair for Lorien." Now I don't entirely recall what the production team said about why they made Legolas blonde, but since Legolas is making an appearance in the Hobbit, I have a feeling he'll make the Mirkwood company blonde as well, since for the most part the movies tend to follow strict regional characteristics. That being said, I'd be all over brown elf-hair. I hope they make an Elrond or Arwen, and I hope they don't wind up coming in the huge expensive sets.
General Magma Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 (edited) Isn't it just the same color as the CMF elf has on its arms? That would be sand green - I kind of doubt it. Although it's possible, the color we've seen on the poster seems a bit too dark for that. It's most likely dark green or, hopefully, olive green. EDIT: 1000th post. ~ General Magma Edited January 21, 2012 by General Magma

hungryhobbit Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 (edited) Although I agree that the Lord of the Rings theme will not stretch out as long as the Star Wars sets, I believe there is a great possibility for at least three years + of material that LEGO can work with. As a die hard fan of both LEGO and Lord of the Rings, here is my list of future possible sets that have great potential for the next few years (excluding The Hobbit). Hobbiton: 1) Bag End (The hobbit hole itself with removable top, with interior rooms - kitchen and living room - and front lawn) 2) Bilbo's Birthday Party (Tents, banners, tables and a music stage for hobbit musicians) 3) Hobbiton Market (Like the Medieval Market Village, only hobbit size and more outdoor stalls) 4) The Green Dragon Inn (Exclusive set with local hobbits and Rosie Cotton) Bree: 1) The Prancing Pony Inn (Strider, Barliman Butterbur and inn patrons with man & hobbit bedrooms - possibly an outside stable?) 2) Bree Gate House - (The Gate of Bree, with watchman, hobbit, and Nazgul figures Moria: 1) The Bridge of Khazad-Dum (Collapsible bridge and stairway with Gandalf & Balrog + Legolas and Frodo and goblin archers) 2) Mithril Dwarf Mine (Mine Cart, dwarf skeletons, mithril and forge with anvil and bellows) 3) The Doors of Durin (Entrance into Moria with Watcher - or tentacles - and Bill the Pony. Rivendell: 1) Flight to the Ford (Arwen and Frodo + Nazgul and horses) 2) Elrond's House (Interior library with quest quarters and the hall of fire, with Elrond and Old Bilbo figures) 3) Council of Elrond (Elven chairs with figures from different factions of Middle Earth) Lothlorien: 1) Elven Watchtower (Tree outpost with Haldir and Elven warriors/scouts + goblins) 2) Celeborn & Galadriel's Throne Room 3) Docks of Lothlorien (Swan boat, docks with Elven canoes and Galadriel figure) Gondor: 1) Minas Tirith Summit (Throne Room, Gandalf, Faramir, Pippin, Denethor and guards) 2) House of Healing (Eowyn, Faramir, Aragorn) 3) Main Gate (Catapult, Grond, Gondor archers, Gandalf on Shadowfax and Mordor Orcs) 4) Gondor Signal Tower (Pippin, Gondor soldiers, and Gandalf) Stand Alone Sets: 1) Farmer Maggot's Farm (Fence, Farmer Maggot, Grip, Fang & Wolf - His dogs - Merry & Pippin with vegetables) 2) Flotsam & Jetsam (Isengard wall with Treebeard, Merry & Pippin) 3) Dead Marshes (Frodo, Sam & Gollum, with Nazgul and Fell-Beast 4) Isengard (Gandalf, Saruman, Wormtongue, Uruks and possibly an Eagle) 5) Baradur (Orcs, the Eye of Sauron, the Mouth of Sauron) 6) Amon Hen (Frodo, Boromir, Merry, Pippin and Uruks w.Lurtz) 7) The Golden Hall of Edoras (Theoden, Eowyn, Eomer, Wormtongue and Hama) 8) Gates of Mordor 9) Ent Moot (Several Ents with Merry & Pippin) 10)The Eastern Road (Hobbits with Ringwraith and horse, tree stump with mushrooms) 11)Oliphant (With Eastern Men from Haradrim) 12)Corsair ship (Aragorn, Legolas & Gimli and Men of the South) 13)Rohan Farm Raid (Dunland attackers and Uruk Hai and Rohan villagers) 14)Paths of the Dead (Indoor Tomb set) I am looking forward to the new set pieces and enemies (a LEGO wolf and eagle would be great!) Fives Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 That is sand green for sure. It is too light to be dark green or the new olive green. I think that the sand green colour suits Legolas best, and would think they would have ruined the figure otherwise. As for Gollum, I think the level of detail will be similar to that of the recent General Grievous or Sebulba figs from the past could years. I think his arms will be the Ninjago skellie arms, and he will have brand new legs and a really detailed body/head piece, with the head not being moveable. As for colour, he will be either tan or fleshie. Also, I don't know who is in charge of the emoticons, but there should be a special Gollum one for the LOTR thread, like how the SW forum has Vader.
DaleDVM Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 He looks sand green or possibly olive green. I haven't seen enough of that color to know it well. It is definately not dark green or bright green.
Skafte Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Bree Gate House - (The Gate of Bree, with watchman, hobbit, and Nazgul figures Including a Peter Jackson minifig with carrot.
Shasat Spacerider Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Including a Peter Jackson minifig with carrot. [lotrnerd] And they also need to release Peter Jacson as Rohan Spearman and Peter Jackson as Corsair who gets shot by Leggy's arrow.[lotrnerd]

Might LEGO do something similar?
Darth of Soals Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 (edited) ====================================================================================================== -QUOTE- But even then, this seems far fetched, since LotR is kind of violent for LEGO. ====================================================================================================== Yes but so is star wars and all that, this is a good asset to lego and im looking forward to the figs if they go through with it... Fives Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 I've been pondering the whole "what green will Legolas have" thing, and I found a description of his outfit in an old LOTR book based on the films. It says "a double-layered suede jerkin: the under layer was khaki-green and the slightly thicker outer layer was brown". This then got me looking at the sand green color and the olive green color. With further inspection, it looks like the new olive green color would be much more appropriate than the sand green for Legolas. But, unfortunately, from the way the pic looks, it will be sand green.

Sand green..? It looks more like olive green than sand green, to me. I'm quite sure that the new olive green was actually going to be used for LOTR, but they normally don't introduce a new color for just one theme - which is why they used on a few things in this year's first wave already. I'm still placing my bets on olive green. ~ General Magma

We will just have to wait till the toy fair to be sure of anything.

Might LEGO do something similar? Wait, Peter Jackson also had a cameo as a Hobbit? I did not know that. I don't think LEGO will release minifigs of PJ's cameos since they had screen times of less than a second, except for the Corsair, who got shot by Leggy's arrow.

It would be awesome, but unlikely. They did make a George Lucas minifig so why not Peter Jackson? Doubt it would be for sale though. Regarding the Gollum figure, something I found interesting is that in the films he is a pale white/grey flesh colour but was described as black in the book.

Yes, they pass him and he bites a carrot and farts.
Haltiamieli Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 Yes, they pass him and he bites a carrot and farts. He is portraying a Man, not a Hobbit. And he belches instead of farting.

BrickBob Studpants Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 (edited) The Aragorn picture was featured on the website, although only for a short period of time it appears (I checked the website yesterday and it was definitely there ) Too bad I can't prove it, the Internet Archive Wayback Machine doesn't recognize the site Edited January 23, 2012 by Lego-Freak
