Cool, thanks for a through out and great review. I haven´t been so keen on getting any of these bigger sets, the prices being the biggest con. But this set on sale because of the minifigs and all the great parts, is starting to sound more and more like I am gonna get it

Although this isn´t easy to build i think kids around 8-12 would find this completed fun to play with, I would part it out and use else where.

8 minifigs total. King has printed breastplate in addition to printed torso. Also the King and Gimili has printed helmet. Nice detail too. Legolas' pointed ear are on the yellow head piece so the ear is transferable to any minifig with flesh colored head.

The elf is Haldir right, not Legolas? Judging from the clothes. :sweet:

what else can I use to upload my photo? I went to imageshack but it immediately had pop ups about my computer having viruses...which I know isn't true.

Photobucket and Flickr are awesome. I won't even go to Imageshack to look at other peoples pics...

BTW, does anyone know if this is the biggest Lego castle ever?

Well, before this, the largest castle ever (for sheer size) was 8877 Vladek's Dark Fortress.

I suspect it beats even Helm's Deep, but I'm not sure. It would be nice to have a photo of that and Helm's Deep side by side (from someone who owns both sets, obviously).

Wow that looks awesome with the added sections! I would maybe say do some modding so they do not all look the exact same, but thats nit picking and I think they look amazing regardless! :sweet:

Let's see a MOD of the Uruk set and make the wall a 90 degree angle so you could make it a full wall.

A better use of those bricks would be to make the main walls taller.

Thank you for the helpful and detailed review!

Its a really beautiful set, but I wont give 150euros for that... sorry.. :hmpf_bad: hope to hit later a complete used one in ebay or something like that...

As cool as the set is, it gives me a somewhat incomplete feeling due to it being open on the back. Of course TLG cannot sell you a mountain, but well... If I had the money my first step would be to buy two Helms Deeps and combine them into a fully closed castle, like when you combine 2 kingdoms jousts. That would not be movie accurate, but at least the orcs could not enter the castle any more simply by walking around to the other side.

I hope to see the first MOCs of mountains soon.

Stunning set right here! It's a bit pricey for me (even more than the Joust!) but I will get this set evntually, along with a few Uruk Hai sets. Thanks for the review!

This is the best castle set I have ever bought. It is not the best castle, but the set using almost all brick built sections has taught me alot! I will never use pre-fabricated walls again lol.

I appreciate the analysis of how to add Uruk-Hai sections by Deskp.

I must admit I was already thinking this way, but it helped to visualize things before I had the set in hand. Here's a pic of how I put mine together. Uruk-Hai section between the "drain" and main body, and I evened out the crenelations at the top. I plan to add one more section on the end, and I'll build it without the bumped-out section. I also deleted the catapult and "dwarf-tossing" feature.

You said Legolas, it's Haldir.

I was thinking about collecting all the LOTR sets, but after seeing this set I think I'll have to extened my buget. I think I'll get 1 of these 5-6 Uruk-hai army sets, and 1-2 Orc forge sets. I also hope to get Mines of Moria, Gandalf Arrives, Shelob Attacks, and Attack on Weathertop later on.

Those who are fortunate enough to own a Haldir already, do you think he could be enhanced even more by giving him metallic-gold arms? Would that match the torso better than the pearl-gold ones? What do you think?

In My opinion lego should have made Helm's Deep come with Eomer, 2 Rohirrum, and 2-3 elves also including of course the figures already in the set.

For My Helm's Deep I'm turning some Kingdoms figures into Elves. What do you guys think of these pieces?

Elven Helmet: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=x43

Elven Head: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=3626bpb402

Elven Bow: http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=4499

Elven Sword: I have 14 Gray Dastan swords and 1 Gold Katana for Haldir.

Tell Me what you guys yhink and if you have any suggestions please post them SOON for I will be ordering within the week.

Seems like a good choice. The helmet looks a bit heavy, but even Elves are heavily armoured sometimes. For elven riders or heavy guards ok, for an archer it is a bit too much. Mix in a few CMf elf hairpieces.

I would use the big bow from the CMF elf though. The katanas make the best elven swords IMHO. Don't forget there is a dragon katana...

I've been avoiding this set. It's massive, beautifully designed, fairly priced (somewhat) and full of playability. It has so much potential to completely upend my budget for the year that I can't bear to look at it.

I don't even like Castle that much, but this is so movie-faithful and lovely to display that I'm sorely tempted. In my opinion, it's the best of the LotR sets thus far. So much bang for your buck!

Thanks a lot for this nice, in-depth review.

I was going to try to wait to buy this set, but after reading your review and seeing amazon drop the price to $117 for a day, I snagged it. Now after reading comments about combining 2 sets, I'm wishing I had snagged two of them. I have a difficult time passing up sales. Today I will build it. I often sell off the minifigs to help offset the cost of my lego addiction but this time I need them all. I was thinking I could use some of the PotC zombies for Uruk-Hai. WalMart clearanced some PotC Captain's Cabins and I managed to get three of them which gives me 6 zombies. I'll be sure not to use Jack Sparrow though.
