Posted May 29, 201212 yr I am wondering how people design their civilians for their MOCs? I don't want to just use uniformed futuron/ice planet etc figs for them, but I can't figure out how to take regular city folk and make them feel like they are from the future. I still use these minifigs, but I'd like to integrate figs from regular city sets. Ideally I'd like something that fits with SPIII in particular. So, how does everyone here overcome this obstacle?
May 29, 201212 yr I mostly try out all kinds of combo's with minifig parts. So that they will look from the future, but not a specific faction. Edited May 29, 201212 yr by -zenn
May 29, 201212 yr I find that if you go with "normal" CITY bodies and carefully select the head/hair combo you can get a pretty good futuristic vibe but retain that civilian quality. That's what I did with the cyberpunk-style teen figures here: Phoenix Fireball by vynsane, on Flickr I'm particularly fond of the driver: Phoenix Fireball by vynsane, on Flickr Edited May 29, 201212 yr by vynsane
May 29, 201212 yr Funky hair / alien heads are the best way (with civy clothes). The other simple way is just add a helmet/air tank on the guy. Instant Scifi! Though it really depends on the actual moc you're using them in. (Awesome speader Vynsane! - great fig choices too )
May 29, 201212 yr Excellent speeder there. Looks like EXOFORCE hair and bright colour combo's are the order of the day! Bright colours in the arms and legs can make dreary civvies look more futuristic. I like to add breathing apparatus or if you aren't purist some of the aftermarket goggles and helmets available really do spice things up! :)
May 29, 201212 yr Some weird splashes of color work well. Some of the CMF's are great for this. I' m especially fond of the series 6 skater girl for the hair with the pink stripe and her black torso with striped purple sleeves. For mor subdued earth tones raid some of the licensed minifigs, particularly the non Stormtrooper/ clone Star Wars ones. The CW based figs in particular have some nice civilian torsos. ( politicians, bounty hunters, even some Jedi) you just have to watch them for pink fleshy parts. For more space scoundrel stuff try PotC, or Indianna Jones. For spicier but non military uniforms look at Alpha Team ( a great 70's scifi vibe with each having a different color sleeve) or agents. Plus while the actual Space Police minifigs are kinda look alike, the space crooks have a lot to work with.
May 29, 201212 yr The most important part for me are the minifigure's head. The body can look military, just as some everyday clothes that are in fashion today are supposed to look like that. Select for the most friendly, happy or just most plain head. Edited May 29, 201212 yr by DraikNova
May 30, 201212 yr If you are dealing with planets with earth-like atmospheres, you can go with a sci-go western feel (think outlaw star, firefly, trigun) and use western or adventurers clothing. Some of the Dino fighters (old and new) and movie bodies are good too.
May 30, 201212 yr Another good source for interesting torsos and legs are the World Racers figs. Particularly the green team. They wear these unique jumpsuit racing suits with some neat and different sections of armoring. Since you are looking to do SP III, I would try and go for a sort of Buck Rogers tv show aesthetic for the civvies. Very bright or contrasts colors. No earth tones. Snug or tight fitting clothes. No ruffles or loose billowy looking medieval stuff. Go with distinctive or oddly colored hair or semi out of place hats. ( I can't help but look at that Monster Fighters bowler and think of a group of Droogie's) A good fig for assorted females is the CMF swimmer. The torso alone looks like a stylized black tank top, plus the face with glasses or goggles goes well for scifi. I have way too many of her, and have used parts from her extensively in my AC setup. The lifeguard and any of the surfers work as well. You can almost use he CMF rocker figs as is out of the box. The Mohawk dude and pink haired girl are just perfect to blend into SP3. While the pink skinned licensed figs don't work to well, you can easily make use of the non human ones for MOC's. The Star Wars or Clone Wars Bounty Hunters are great for this, especially heir heads. Aurora Sing, Cad Bane, Sugi, Embo, or even aliens such as Ayala Secura or Ashoka or similar look very distinctive when swapped to different hair and bodies. I hope this helps. June 1, 201212 yr If you are thinking any version of Space Police then you are thinking space stations. Many space stations have civilian personell, dockworkers and freighter crew that are usually in some form of uniform, usually jumpsuits. Those can simply be pocketed torsos and legs that are the same color. Companies also use uniforms, and Lego has established Octan as existing into the future with its logo appearing in SPIII sets in small ways. There are plenty of blue pocketed shirt torsos with the Octan logo, and with those you could use the first wave Power Miners blue pants for a refueling crew. Use cyborg and scientist heads fromn Power Miners and Agents, and give your figs sci-fi looking equipment. Try to use clothing that doesn't show a neck opening, and avoid using hands the same color as heads, so you can give your figs helmets and air-tanks to work outside a space station.
