I didn't really have a direction at first, gradually I sort of made up what direction I want him to move in, but I scrapped that pretty fast and decided to just go with the flow

I have a background story, some motivations and general character outline for Eric, but I just let the game kind of shape his future and person. I never planned him to be anti-Bonaparte and pro-Wolfgang, that just happened because of game storylines.

I had a basic plan for Pretzel at first, but then that's changed already a few times... now I have nothing. He's changed quite a bit since the beginning. Believe it or not, he's far more easy going now actually being able to go on quests and talk in the hall freely with people like Atramor and Guts. On his first quest he was rebuking Leo for believing in Ennoc. If I had kept him the way he was I'm pretty sure I would have dropped him by now for being too tiresome to play.

I didn't even know Heckz would turn up into a metrosexual sorcerer at first, I planned for him to be something far more stupid than that.

By the way, can I feel as if that "bad acting" part from Heckz is completely unnecessary. Can I just act like it never happened or do I have to go along with it forever?

Please. There are parts of Althior that will never, ever be mentioned by me again. We've all made some pretty bad decisions with our characters.

Originally Arthur was meant to go Mage -> Sorcerer -> Chi Monk -> Prophet, each time delving more and more into the spiritual aspects of Chaos and having prophetic dreams, that sort of thing. While I've kept some elements of him that were meant to lead to that, I've ended up downplaying a lot of them as I've steered away from my original plans.

How much did 53 play into this?

I'm probably going to scrap Mortimer Mahzan pretty soon; I didn't have a plan at first, and then I kind of just... lost sight of the character along the way. About halfway through I had a plan and stuff laid out for him, but I ended up unable to keep to it and I think I've lost the character. I'm getting a little bored of him (bored's not really the right word. I feel as though I've exhausted the character. Idk. You feel me?), and I've plans for another character (who will be introduced as an npc in my next quest) that will hopefully be a lot more interesting to not only play as, but to interact with.

I generally play Dyric as quests affect him. I'm pretty sure the whole 'Assassin of the Light' idea wasn't planned out, nor has really anything since his first couple quests. There's a moment I want to do some time soon, but I'm going to let it happen naturally, so who knows how long that will be.

I have big plans for Karl [:P] I'm not even gonna hint at them here, because it'll spoil it for later [:P] But it'll involve multiple quests and teams, and he'll find out a lot out his parents [:P] And trust me, however much it'll seem like the typical Vader-Luke scenario, it'll be totally different [:P]

Anyone have my opinions on the RP style I'm using ATM? [:P] I'm not sure if I'm doing great or horribly... [:S] [:P]

You seem to know how to write just fine, so why don't you please stop using those weird emoticons in place of periods. It is seriously distracting and takes the focus away from what you are trying to say.

But really, you can write well, and that is always a plus when playing a game that's pretty much based on writing.

Well, thanks I guess [:P] I worry that I'm writing posts too short, and not giving enough detail, but maybe that's partially die to having to use an android... I should be back to using a normal comp soon [;)]

In a lot of places an emote often takes the place of a full stop, and a full stop often is an expression of blandness, hostility, or deadpan [:P] I guess I'm just used to those places, but for the sake of being comprehensible I'll put a full stop before emotes in future. [;)]

Um...I really don't want to seem negative here, but it's not really a question of whether you're using a period or not, it's that the emoticons themselves are distracting.

If you really need to use them to get what you're saying across, Eurobricks already has its own selection of LEGO-themed emoticons. Click on the little yellow smiley face above the text box, and then click on whichever one matches your mood(or on "Show All," if the ones shown don't.).

I don't know what places you have frequented, but if a period is considered hostile then that place is certainly in dire need of a good whopping from an English teacher.

I've heard what you're saying a dozen times before ever since I started using internet way back when, it's just the fad that changes every time. At one point... it was... "cool"... to put... three dots... everywhere... AnD aT oNe PoInT sOmEoNe tHoUgHt tHiS wAs a NiFtY wAy To WrItE. And who can forget using brightly colored fonts, yay!

Whatever the current fad is, writing normal text is the one that actually gets you understood and respected. Emoticons are best used sparingly.

It is really easy. For a normal smile [:)] you just need to type : classic : (get rid of spaces) :classic:. Winky face is [;)] : wink : , and tongue face [:P] is : tongue : . If that's not enough to get you started then I don't know what will help.

Yeah, using those emotes are good for one-offs, especially when they portray an action a lot better than text symbols ever could (such as the :poke: emote [:P]), but when you're constantly using tonguey-smiles it's so much easier for me to type the brackets. [:P] It's kinda like a reflex, actually... [:P]

Heh, they're not considered hostile on their own, but a lack of emotes in a post certainly conveys that. [:P] And I mostly frequent comedy groups and personal chatrooms. [:P]

No worries then, you won't have to put up with it for long. [:P]

Agreed with all the above. Sometimes less is more. Besides, that's why we have different words with different connotations for the same thing. Let your personality speak instead of the emotes.

As for actual role play, you seem to be pretty on top of stuff. Interaction is generally better than monologues, so keeping posts short is always better in my opinion, unless it needs to be long, and it rarely does (an exception to the rule). You have a nice balance right now of interior and exterior without ever really alienating the other players (problematic if you ever turn entirely interior) but still with a reflection of Karl's inner world (the trouble if you're exclusively exterior... sometimes).

My one personal note would be to have a MORE blank slate. He's a thief who wandered in. That's good. That's some back story, and it colors him. He seems attracted to the idea of family and togetherness even as an outsider. That's good too! And even an opinion or two on the houses wouldn't be amiss since he's from Eubric. But one has to be careful about painting one's self into a corner. Don't have quests planned for him. Those don't exist. Maybe keep who his parents are in the back of your mind, but don't set it in stone quite yet, or if you do, just let it happen organically. Almost anyone can tell you, the story of Heroica is collective, and generally your past events will write you, not vice-versa. Look at the Hall right now. Arthur and Tesni talked about Wren (a quest) and their theories on Chaos (something that came out in that quest) in comparison to a bloody revolution in a foreign country one of them previously put down (a quest Tesni went on) and one of them just helped fulfill (a quest Arthur went on). After that Althior, Alexis and Arthur chatted about their relationships - things that were built and torn apart of a couple of quests, and the fall out of which is still evolving at the characters themselves evolve as they continue to grow. Look at Benji and Althior's discussion at the end of 116: Althior is sick because the Wolfgang, a group he grudgingly helped in 100, is killing a little girl. Benji supports the Wolfgang because he met a woman he liked who was part of them in 33, and who was then killed in 66. And look how much fuller those interactions are because they characters had multiple quests to explore them in.

That doesn't mean you can't have some stories going in. Look at Atramor or Hybros or Skrall for tips on that. But watch how they don't over power the story they're on, they just color the character in the same way previous quests might.

Please, you asked for advice, so take it. Stop posting the bracket emoticons! If it is disrespectful in other places to not use them, consider it disrespectful to use them here when several people have asked you not to.

It is in fact stated in the Site Guidelines that Eurobricks is not a chatroom or message board. There is a certain etiquette expected here, otherwise staff scrutiny becomes more focused on your posting behavior.

Kingdom feuds are long, bloody conflicts, Guts. There's no true victors, merely underhanded schemes. If the people here can get an edge up to survive...

I enjoy that Dyric comes from Duplovia. We've seen the place fleshed out nicely in your quests, and it's a strong character trait that is driven entirely by back story but never over-shadows the current action. This is a prime example to other players (particularly new ones!) of how back story can be part of your character without being your character.
