I don't really like flash backs in general. I found they are rarely done in an interesting, engaging way, and usually feel like a cop-out. I far prefer when stories are told linearly - like in Les Miserables, for one (I mainly use this example because I just saw the movie). Obviously, this kind of format is a lot harder in an environment like this, and I wouldn't suggest it. Personally, I'd say to describe things as much as possible if you want these events known. Besides, hearing a person's past filtered through that person can be a lot more interesting than seeing it without any perspective.

Guess you won't like Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction then...

Interesting to see Tarn's relationship with Rystael mentioned (Flipz, you got the spelling spot on). For me, that relationship defined Tarn's character up to the point he joined Heroica. From then on, whilst taking cues from his upbringing (strong, brave, yet naive) I have been able to add more to him with each Quest he goes on and with all the other heroes he interacts with. The deth of Constance was obviously something that effected him greatly, and that was due to both of those elements.

It seems everyone has written backstory. I just make Mine up as I go along. And when It comes to planning a second character; I'd wait till getting to level 50 before doing anything like that.

I said rarely. The Prestige is an amazing film, and makes great use of flashbacks and forewords.

That film is here there and everywhere! I didn't get it till like... 5 minutes after the film ended.

Not everyone.

Make that everyone who roleplays.

Plus, David Bowie is in it! Win-win situation!

Have you seen Reservoir Dogs? I take a lot of inspiration for Haldor's speeches and rants from Mr White and Mr Pink respectively. Damn, someone needs to ask Skovgaard his view on tipping.

Get on it and watch that thing; it's hilarious!

Arthur reminds me a lot of Mr Blonde... well, if you count the fact they're both psychopaths. :poke:

Not me. I make it up too.

I'm not alone on this world!

At first I just made a character with no real planning whatsoever, but over time I've found what Benji's backstory really is... But haven't found the opportunity to make use of it though...

I made my character's back story as soon as I signed up. I didn't know all the details at that point, but I knew what and who my character was.... And I remain the only one who does, with a character that doesn't draw attention to himself or his past apart from occasional cryptic tidbits about a dead master who was also a druid. He was set-up to be a druid before I even knew what the class was like. Although right now he seems quite talkative to the immortal abomination he's currently chatting up. I've revealed more about his past and his true self in this quest than in any before (although I did throw in a moment in Sandy's Protect my Brother where he switched helmets...). Endgame, due to Aquos the blind, knows the second most about my character's nature, but still next to nothing about his/her past. What can I say? I like mysterious characters like Abe.

I don't think I had much of my backstory made before Dyric entered the hall, save the basic fact that he had been exiled from some distant country. Most of his backstory was created through Quest 19.

I basically used the actual board game to think of my character's backstory. Over time, though, I learnt more about the RPG and as that happened I made improvisations. I've already got an idea of Drake revealing that his last name isn't actually Flamerobe and that Flamerobe is just a nickname.

I've already hinted why Flamerobe is a nickname in Quest #62.

Moving from R&D...

Not to be an attention grabber, but any suggestions on how I can roleplay Hoke better. He just seems like an afterthought, it thought about at all. I think he is a solid, gimmick-less character, but I guess that isn't cutting it from a roleplaying standpoint.

My suggestion is not to just stuff the roleplaying in him - you're in the Fields anyway - but rather to have a less stoic reaction to what happens on Quests, or to at least make his voice on important decisions heard. Just because it can be an easy decision to make doesn't mean it has to be. Respond naturally to NPCs and other heroes and such. Hoke in the Hall is a pretty cool guy, he doesn't always have to be quietly efficient on a Quest.

My advice would be to:

But in all seriousness, if you don't know who your character is, ask him. Let a random thought drift through his mind, and explore what responses it evokes in him. It doesn't even have to be written down (though it may help you remember it later); once you've got that little foothold into Hoke's mind, you can sort of just hop in and take him for a drive. Don't make choices for him, just empower him to make his own choices. You'll have the hang of his roleplaying down in no time. :sweet:

As an added bonus tip, you might want to re-read Quest 19, especially the ending. Lots of good footholds there, and if you can manage to climb into his head there, you can re-read through all of 53 from Hoke's perspective, letting you see where he's at now.

I love Hoke. I've said it every time I've hosted him and interacted with him in character. He's just great. He is gimmick-less, and it works perfectly. Hell, it's almost a gimmick with all these other gimmicks flying around. I'd agree with CMP, perhaps have him voice his thoughts a bit more, and show what stuff rattles him/pushes his buttons (even the calmest of people, and I suggest keeping him calm, have subjects that make them angry/uncomfortable, and things that they object to).

 Same here! Although sometimes characters like that can be a little less fun to play, it's really nice to have them around. Hoke had some really great moments towards the end of 53.

I was thinking, maybe once every two weeks, someone could post a sort of pros and cons thing about a character. Or we could do a Review the previous reviewer's character thing. I just think that the theatre is underused!

Posted

So it's a meme? I review a character, and the next person in line reviews my character? I like it!

That's how It works!

Care to start the ball rolling, Skyrimguy?

I'd be stuck on who to review.

Ok then!

Bartholomew Docken

Docken was one of the first Heroes on the Heroica scene, having took part in the first quest. He has an infinite knowledge of Olegaia comparable only to... Brickdoctor's knowledge of Olegaia. He never really did any roleplaying, but still answers questions in the hall, (And occasionally facepalms at Sarge!) In statistical terms he may be one of the best equipped heroes out there. With a Sp of 25 and a bow for fighting in the back row, he is a formidable fighter and a brilliant tactician. But he overdoes it on the raw meat and chicken legs. :poke:

(A bit short but there aint much roleplaying and this is the theatre)

Now the next person reviews sarge, and the person after that reviews the next person's hero.
