Ultron Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 I think flies and spiders would be a good set, gotta build up that giant spider army! It could come with around 3 spiders, some trees, webs of course, Bilbo with sting, and a dwarf or two that are exclusive to the set. Also, maybe some kind of new mold that can hold a minifigure in what looks like a web cocoon? It would be similar to the new Han Solo in carbonite except not rectangular. It would be cool to get a barrel out of bond set with some barrels and dwarves and bilbo, a wood elf or so and a platform type thing that could release the barrels, kind of like a trap door. Quote
CMP Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Wave 1 The Golden Hall $10 King Theoden (Dual-sided head, one possessed, one normal), Grima Wormtongue. Throne, weapons rack, collapsing dining table. Denethor's Pyre $20 Denethor (dual-sided head; grim, insane ) Pippin (Gondor tunic, dual-sided head, normal, ), Faramir (dual-sided head, unconscious, normal), Gandalf the White?. Stone pyre, palantir, torch stand, Shadowfax. Warg Ambush $25 King Theoden (war gear), Aragorn, Rohan soldier, 2 Orthanc goblins. Theoden's horse, fairly unarmored Rohan horse, 2 Wargs, cart of supplies, some landscape. Dead Marshes $30 Frodo, Gollum, Dead Isildur soldier, Nazgul. A circular pond sort of thing with a function with hinges to put a fig down into the water or move a fig in the water out of it, depending on who's attached, Fellbeast. Morgul Vale $50 Gollum, Sam, Frodo, Witchking (with armor, from RotK), Nazgul, Fellbeast, Nazgul steed. 2 towers flanking a gate, a mix of light bley and trans light blue, with a light blue LED function facing upward. Not overly huge, though. Rivendell $70 - 80 Frodo (in Rivendell tunic), Gandalf the Gray, Elrond, Arwen, Bilbo, Aragorn (Rivendell clothing). Elrond's hall (the place where Frodo awakens, basically), bridge, pavilion sort of area, blacksmith (where Narsil was reforged). All are in a modular format. Siege of Isengard $100 Saruman, Grima Wormtongue, Merry, Pippin, 2 orcs, brick-built Treebeard. Isengard'll pretty much a scaled-down tower. First floor is kind of made out to be 'under' Isengard from a playset perspective, with a weapons rack and a forge, second floor is the 'library', third floor is the palantir room, fourth floor is blank but with a window (from when Saruman and Wormtonge looked over the Uruk army in tTT.) And of course the top floor. Also one of those little wooden orc structures, with a White Hand standard and a collapsing function. Wave 2 Boromir's End $10 Boromir, Uruk-hai, Aragorn, brick-built tree. The Door of Durin $20 Gandalf the Gray, Gimli, Frodo, brick built lake creature, small rock formation with, well, the doors of Durin. Possibly, it could open by flipping around a point in the center, one side being with dull etchings, the other with reflective ones. Printing...hopefully. The Witchking of Angmar $30 Armored Theoden, armored Eowyn, Witchking, Fellbeast. Some random ruins, since the Fellbeast'll probably be molded. The Prancing Pony $40 = 50 Butterbur, cloaked Aragorn, Frodo, Nazgul, Nazul's horse, 2 story Prancing Pony, first floor bar, second floor bedroom. Bridge of Khazad-dum $50 Gandalf the Gray, Frodo, Moria goblin archer, brick-built Balrog, collapsing bridge. Oliphaunt Warbeast $60 - 70 Faramir (ranger), Frodo, Gollum, Oliphaunt 'driver', Haradrim soldier. Oliphaunt, mostly molded, but with brick-built saddle, small campsite and play-function'd landscape. The Black Gate $100-120 Aragorn (Elessar), Gandalf the White, Eomer, 2 Gondor soldiers, Rohan soldier, 4 Orcs, armored troll. POSSIBLY Mouth of Sauron. Shadowfax, Eomer or Aragorn's horse, gate of Mordor, with a big function to open it, obviously. Wave 3 Nazgul Escape $10 Frodo, Merry, Ringwraith, rearing horse, brickbuilt raft. Defenders of Gondor $20 -25 Denethor's captain, Gondor soldier, 2 orcs, that...one-eyed goblin guy. (I'd bad with bit character names. ), short tower with trebuchet, pins for the White City. Attack on Miras Tirith $30 Gandalf the White, Gondor soldier, 2 orcs, Shadowfax, troll, orc siege tower. Not exactly a scene, but more a mash-up between the siege of Minas Tirith and when Osgiliath was abandoned. Bag End $40 - 50 Bilbo, Frodo, Gandalf the Gray, Nazgul, Nazgul's steed. Bag End, with modular rooms. Entry room, kitchen, Bilbo's reading room (with Sting, mithril coat, Smaug drawing on map, etc.), dining room (with fireplace, function similar to Gryffindor tower to switch between normal fire and Ring with glowing symbols). Lothlorien $60 Galadriel, Haldir, Legolas, Frodo, Sam, stone basin (with some function that flips it between Bag End and Sauron's Eye), tree hut, 2 Elven canoes, golden leaf trees. Gate of Minas Tirith (Grond) $70 Pippin (Gondor tunic), 2 Gondor soldiers, 3 orcs, 2 trolls. Large Grond battering ram, Minas Tirith gate (connects with the White City/Defenders of Gondor). Siege ladder, buckets of burning oil. The White City $150 Denethor, Faramir, Gandalf the White, Aragorn (Elessar), Merry (Rohan garb), 3 Gondor soldiers, 4 orcs, one-eyed goblin leader, armored troll. First level has no real gate (gotta get the other set ), but has a building with collapsing roof. Second floor has 2 towers, one with a catapult, one with the beacon of Amon Din. 3rd floor has nothing particularly special, 4th floor has the throne room and the white tree, and is mostly on top of the white wall. *Stops for a breath* Quote
Dwellington Posted January 14, 2012 Posted January 14, 2012 Oh God that's terrifying. Meanwhile, from Tolkien's own text: "Between them was a narrow space, and there upon a floor of polished stone, written with strange signs, a man might stand five hundred feet above the plain. This was Orthanc, the citadel of Saruman, the name of which had (by design or chance) a twofold meaning; for in the Elvish speech orthanc signifies Mount Fang, but in the language of the Mark of old the Cunning Mind." Saruman's tower, in proper scale, would be just underneath that bridge on the Petronas Towers. Poor guy had some mad tower envy going on. Quote
Elander Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 The Gate of Moria Just for fun, use names for your sets that are classic lines from the movies. The "Entrance to Moria," should be "Speak friend, and enter." OK, I'm bored. Sorry. No, your idea is great! More, that would be really great! Names like this would give LEGO The Lord of the Rings something special. I believe anybody would love these names. The Moria Gate could get the scale alike 8089 Hoth Wampa Cave. With in the dark shiny stickers or printed bricks would that gate look absolute fantastic. MOC at www.brickshelf.com Maybe it is not too difficult to give this gate a collapse function. It could be that the (brickbuilt) Watcher wants to enter. So get this set a playable function and a bit action. The Bridge of Khazad-dum Instead of "Gandalf vs. the Balrog," it should be called "You shall not pass!" Damn, these names give these sets an kind of final touch. MOC at www.xy-cooperations.de Is it possible to create a shiny magic wand? Maybe with a kind of LED light up function? What do you think? Damn, that scene is legendary. I believe the collapse function is for the Bridge of Khazad-dum easier to create like The Gate of Moria. Anyway, both play sets would be awesome. Quote
JackJonespaw Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 Is it possible to create a shiny magic wand? Maybe with a kind of LED light up function? What do you think? Well, if they can do it with lightsabers and flashlights, then probably. My ideas: $10 Set: The Fellowship Splits Minifigs: Frodo, Sam Parts: Boat, piece of river. $10 Set: Fireworks! Minifigs: Merry (2-Faced: Normal and Scorched), Pippin (2-Faced: Normal and Scorched), Gandalf Parts: Tent, Fireworks, Cart $10 Set: The Elephant Challenge Minifigs: Legolas (2-Faced: Normal and Determined), Elephant Drvier, 2 Warriors Parts: Giant Elephant (New Mold), Cart on Elephant Quote
Elander Posted January 18, 2012 Posted January 18, 2012 (edited) Battle Packs with style: Example: What do you think, how could look a Moria Battle Pack? Clearly, the figures are Moria Goblins. Ok, but what is about the location? Do you remember the Great Hall of Moria? A huge room (like an space) with giant columns where the Goblins comes out from the ceiling and climbing along these columns for to catch the fellowship. Well, I think the Moria Battle Pack could look like a column where 4x Moria Goblins climbing along this column. And if you to buy this Battle Pack multiple times -than you can with these columns build the Great Hall of Moria. And now the same procedure for the other locations: Which things/peoples/creatures are we seeing multiple times at the battles? 1: Nothing is easier to create like Osgiliath: -A small 3 in 1 CREATOR ruin, -and finished. 2: Orc rowboat for the Orcs at the Battle of Osgiliath. 3: Orc siege towers or catapults at the Battle of Minas Tirith: -These thinks you can allways need multiple times. 4: War Oliphants at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields: -Why not without main characters? Why to put Legolas or Eomer in this set if you want 2x or 3x War Oliphants. Who needs those characters multiple times? ....stop! But which character are we seeing multiple times? -The Nazgul with the Fell beast! -Yepp, that character is born for a Battle Pack! And what is about the buildings? Example: We do know that the Black Gate of Mordor is black! Ok, let's to introduce that LEGO to bing out the Black Gate of Mordor. -Than you to buy that set. You to build it -and later do you want that gate in a bigger size. What will you need? Right, black bricks (black bricks are also nice for a bigger Orthanc or Barad-dur tower)! ->Therefore it would be helpful if TLG produces a Orc Battle Pack including black bricks. Same procedure for Minas Tirith: We do know that the white city is white. ->Therefore it would be helpful if TLG develops a Gondorian Battle Pack including white bricks (for example a modular city wall part... ) Here I've to give TLG a compliment: The Uruk-hai Army Battle Pack includes the "right" bricks! These are grey! -That is perfect for Helm's Deep! The choice to produce this Battle Pack including grey bricks was absolutely right! Well done! The only thing is Eomer. But this is another story... Fives Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 Remember, we don't know yet whether it's Eomer. And, as others have noted, you can simply treat him as a generic rider. On the Mumakil, a possible compromise between brick built and molded could be a molded head and a brick built body... The only thing that makes that fig look like Eomer is the torso. Eomer never wore a cape, had a shield or used a spears his primary weapon. Also, the helmet is not his. I have a very strong feeling that this is not Eomer in this set. As for the Mumak, a molded head on a brick built body would look really bad, I think. The smooth look of a mold would clash way to much with the blocky look of a brick body. The only sensible way LEGO could do a Mumak would be a big molded animal. I could see the Mumak being made up of many large pieces: a big head/trunk piece, two ears, tusks made from the same pieces used for the 2007 Castle dragons, two body sections, two pairs of legs, and a brick built midsection and tail. Quote
CMP Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 The saddle, I think, will contain the most bricks. It's like a tower in itself. Quote
Darth Nihilus Posted January 20, 2012 Author Posted January 20, 2012 Okay, I finally came up with two ideas for my own thread. XXXX The Battle of Gondor. $40. It's an army-building pack with 6 Gondor troops, a Fell Beast (Molded), a Nazgul to ride the Fell Beast, and 3 horses for three Gondor troops to ride. Accessories/Build: A small vignette-style battlefield, with a clear stand for the Fell beast to attach to and some shrubbery/foliage. Reference image: XXXX Minas Tirith UCS. Pretty much self-explanatory. Similar to the Architecture theme, so as to make it a sellable size. Comes with some exclusive minifig related to the city for a selling point. Reference: More might come later. Quote
hungryhobbit Posted January 21, 2012 Posted January 21, 2012 (edited) Although I agree that the Lord of the Rings theme will not stretch out as long as the Star Wars sets, I believe there is a great possibility for at least three years + of material that LEGO can work with. As a die hard fan of both LEGO and Lord of the Rings, here is my list of future possible sets that have great potential for the next few years (excluding The Hobbit). The Shire: 1) Bag End (The hobbit hole itself with removable top, with interior rooms - kitchen and living room - and front lawn/garden) 2) Bilbo's Birthday Party (Tents, banners, tables and a music stage for hobbit musicians. Bilbo, Gandalf, and Frodo figures, with party hobbits) 3) Hobbiton Market (Like the Medieval Market Village, only hobbit style and more outdoor stalls) 4) The Green Dragon Inn (Exclusive set with local hobbits and Rosie Cotton) 5) Farmer Maggot's Farm (Fence, Farmer Maggot, Grip, Fang & Wolf - His dogs - Merry & Pippin with vegetables. Farmland with a small corn field perhaps) Bree: 1) The Prancing Pony Inn (Strider, Barliman Butterbur and inn patrons with man & hobbit bedrooms - possibly an outside stable.) 2) Bree Gate House - (The Gate of Bree, with Watchman, traveling hobbits, and Nazgul figures) Moria: 1) The Bridge of Khazad-Dum (Collapsible bridge and stairway with Gandalf & Balrog + Legolas and Frodo and goblin archers) 2) Mithril Dwarf Mine (Mine Cart, dwarf skeletons, mithril and forge with anvil and bellows) 3) The Doors of Durin (Entrance into Moria with Watcher - or tentacles - and Bill the Pony, with certain fellowship figures) Rivendell: 1) Flight to the Ford (Arwen and Frodo + Nazgul and horses) 2) Elrond's House (Interior library with quest quarters and the Hall of Fire, with Elrond and Old Bilbo figures) 3) Council of Elrond (Elven chairs with figures from different factions of Middle Earth to represent - Dwarves, Elves, Men and Elrond) Lothlorien: 1) Elven Watchtower (Golden Tree outpost with Haldir and Elven warriors/scouts + goblins) 2) The Mirror of Galadriel (Galadriel, Frodo, and two sleeping fellowship figures, with golden wood/stream scenery 3) Docks of Lothlorien (Swan boat, docks with Elven canoes and Galadriel figure, with special gifts - Elven rope, Elven cloaks, and lembas) Isengard: 1) Orthanc Tower (Gandalf, Saruman, Wormtongue, Uruks and possibly an Eagle. Special palantir piece included) 2) Flotsam & Jetsam (Isengard wall with Treebeard, Merry & Pippin. A fire with a pot and cooking supplies) I am looking forward to the new set pieces and enemies (a LEGO wolf and eagle would be great!) Edited January 22, 2012 by hungryhobbit Quote

MattTheLegoman Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 (edited) Almost as terrible as bad grammar, is the way some people treat the names of people and places in the Tolkien Legendarium. Ugly evil guy with one eye and great depth perception is not what he is called. Gothmog, lieutenant of Minas Morgul is his name. Whether he is a corupted Maia or a leader among the orcs is debatable. Regardless, I love these ideas for sets. I will be working at LDD for quite a while to bring at least digital models about. I already have an idea for a modular Rivendell and am working on a modular Minas Tirith wall as well. Edited January 22, 2012 by MattTheLegoman Quote

They were mostly battle droids though, which are much cheaper to produce than ordinary minifigs (simpler pieces, no pre-assembly required). Quote
Fives Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 Today I was reading about the Mouth of Sauron, and I was wondering how they would do a minifig of him, seeing as he doesn't have a full face, just a mouth. Then, I stumbled upon a picture of what his face may look like under his helmet, and thought that it would look really great in LEGO form. Here is a link to his page on the LOTR wiki: http://lotr.wikia.com/wiki/Mouth_of_Sauron Quote

BTappel Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 It would be fun if LEGO made some "versus" sets. I envision them being cheap sets with a couple mini figs in them and maybe a tiny bit of scenery as well. I have a feeling these would sell faster than they could make them. Examples: Gandalf vs Saruman Aragon vs the uruk hai that killed boromir Aragon vs armored troll Gandalf or Theodin vs witch king Sam or Frodo vs Golem Treebeard vs goblin You get the idea... Quote
