Zerobricks Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 (edited) As a pursit i'm forced to use these: They are the best official Lego tyres, very soft, but very difficult to attach and they are quite heavy. Edited July 6, 2012 by Zblj Quote

Rodeown Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 Well I have just ordered a set of these Ansmann Tyres thanks to Efferman Saw his videos and thought "yep my rockcrawler needs them" so here is the details of my order, I am in UK and these are cheapest i could find for 4. they come in sets of 2 211000224 Ansmann Racing Crawler Wheel and Tyre Set - 108mm Black Beadlock 2 @ £11.49 total = £22.98 Shipping: £3.00 Total: £25.98 Modelsport UK, Cross Green, Otley, West Yorkshire, UK LS21 1HD Tel: 01943 466535 Fax: 01943 850810 VAT Reg No. GB 171 9645 40 Website: www.modelsport.co.uk Email: www.modelsport.co.uk/contact/ Quote

daniele Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 And what about the 2.2"?? Are them too big for t-rims? Quote
DLuders Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 (edited) @ daniele: I'm not sure what you mean by "t-rims", but 2.2 inches ~ 56mm (the nominal size of the Lego 44772 "Wheel 56mm D. x 34mm Technic Racing Medium" used in the 9398 4x4 Crawler and 8297 Off-Roader II sets). I have a 44772 wheel in my hands now, and the OUTSIDE DIAMETER of the wheel is 56mm. However, the INSIDE DIAMETER of standard Lego 54120 "Tire 94.8 x 44 R Balloon" measures only ~54mm (2.12"). A (nominal) 2.2" (56mm) I.D. tire MAY FIT TOO LOOSELY on a Lego 44772 tire. Those Ansmann 211000224 tires that efferman used have these dimensions: "Diameter is 108mm and the width is 40mm or 4,25"x1,45"- 1,9" ." The fit is TIGHT on the Lego 44772 wheels: So, you can take a chance and order some 2.2" (56mm) tires and see how they fit. I'm hoping that the Rok Lox 1.9 Comp Tires that I ordered will fit TIGHT on the same 44772 wheels, since they have dimensions "Outer Diameter: 4.5" (114mm), Width: 1.75" (45mm), Inner Diameter: 1.9" (48mm)": Edited July 7, 2012 by DLuders Quote
daniele Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 Thanks for your reply! ps: t-rims = technic rims :D Quote
DLuders Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 (edited) The set of Rok Lox 1.9 Comp Tires arrived today, so I mounted them on the standard Lego 44772 wheels (that come with the 9398 4x4 Crawler and the 8297 Off-Roader II sets). I do not yet own the 9398 set, so I used a pair of Lego 8297 Off-Roader IIs for side-by-side comparison. The Rok Lox 1.9 Comp Tires fit nice and TIGHT, and their 4.5" (114mm) height allows for greater ground clearance. There is no slippage of the tire when I tried to twist the wheel inside of it, and there is no need for tire glue. The Rok Lox 1.9 Comp Tires come with foam inserts to keep the sidewalls stiff. When one squeezes the tire, you can hear air hissing in and out of the foam. I was able to turn the 8297's front wheels all the way back and forth (lock to lock), without having the tires strike the fenders. Of course, the suspension travel will be compromised, but for low-speed crawling, the advantages of these large, sticky tires outweigh the drawbacks. My Flickr photoset I staged the largest Lego tires side-by-side for this comparison (click on the image to enlarge): Any RC-type 1.9"-I.D. (48mm Inside Diameter) tires should work on the common Lego 44772 wheels. Try it out and compare the "stock" 54120 balloon tires vs. a third-party tire like like the Rok Lox 1.9 Comp Tire: Edited July 7, 2012 by DLuders Quote
timslegos Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 Great pictures David. Would you say the tires are worth it? tim Quote
efferman Posted July 7, 2012 Author Posted July 7, 2012 nice to see that it seems that every 1.9" tires fit on the rim. what will you build with this tires? Quote
DLuders Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 Yes I think it's worth their cost, but there are plenty of RC-type 1.9"-I.D. tires that could work equally as well on Lego 44772 wheels. Those Ansmann tires that efferman used are not easily found in the USA, so I got the (taller) Rok Lox 1.9 Comp Tires instead. I cannot test their crawling abilities until the 9398 4x4 Crawler is released in the USA ~ July 23rd. Do a search for "RC 1.9 tires" on Google or eBay, and find a tread pattern & sidewall profile that you like. Quote
DLuders Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 (edited) What I'd like know is some mid/low profile RC tires with tread patterns like Goodyear Eagle F1 or Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Some that fit 44772 LEGO wheels, but even better if we can find some for the larger 22969 wheels. Problem is that websites selling RC spare parts, don't use to provide detailed info about wheel profile and dimensions the fit the tires. So one has to have them in hands to check if the fit. Here is a 1.9"-I.D. tire ("Duratrax Tires On-Road w/Foam Inserts for Duratrax Mini Quake Wheels") with a directional tread pattern that should fit the Lego 44772 "Wheel 56mm D. x 34mm Technic Racing Medium". From this listing, the "SPECS: Inside diameter: 1.9" (48mm) / Width: 1.37" (35mm) / Outside diameter: 2.55" (65mm)": Another possibility is the Losi Drift-R Drift Compound Tire: Edited July 7, 2012 by DLuders Quote
DLuders Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 (edited) "Plumped" vs. "Non-Plumped" Rok Lox 1.9 Comp Tires on Lego 44772 Wheels. I added the picture above to my Flickr photoset. The "plumped" Rok Lox 1.9 Comp Tires (on the left) are set to the OUTERMOST of the two rims on the Lego 44772 wheel. The "non-plumped" Rok Lox 1.9 Comp Tires (on the right) are set to the INNERMOST of the two rims. These are the same tires on the same Lego wheels, but with two different methods of mounting them. The "plumped" version (with its greater surface area and protruding sidewalk lugs) may perform better in Rock Crawling, but the "non-plumped" version looks better. The Lego 44772 wheels have double rims: Big rubber tires like these can be STRETCHED and contorted to fit the wheels. The rubber is a lot softer (and more pliable) than the Lego tire rubber, so the fit is more "forgiving". Again, here are the "Plumped" vs. "Non-Plumped" versions: Edited July 7, 2012 by DLuders Quote
DLuders Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 (edited) I'm in love with these tires Well, are they 1.9" (48mm) I.D. and can they fit on the Lego 44772 wheels? Edited July 7, 2012 by DLuders Quote
allanp Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 The non plumped tyres do look much better. They look to be larger in diameter and thinner which is generally more life like. Quote
DLuders Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 (edited) Another consideration is the "CONTACT PATCH" area of the tires contacting the surface. Here are two identical 8297 Off-Roader IIs with different tires (the Lego 54120 Balloon tires & the Rok Lox 1.9 Comp Tires). Notice that the Lego balloon tires only contact the surface with a small, rounded "Contact Patch" while the 3rd-party tires have greater contact area --> better grip --> better Crawling ability. Note that the Rok Lox 1.9 Comp Tire shown on the right is the "non-plumped" version. Edited July 8, 2012 by DLuders Quote
Conchas Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 Here is a 1.9"-I.D. tire ("Duratrax Tires On-Road w/Foam Inserts for Duratrax Mini Quake Wheels") with a directional tread pattern that should fit the Lego 44772 "Wheel 56mm D. x 34mm Technic Racing Medium". From this listing, the "SPECS: Inside diameter: 1.9" (48mm) / Width: 1.37" (35mm) / Outside diameter: 2.55" (65mm)": These look awesome! However I'm not sure the inner diameter of these, is the most appropriate for the LEGO 44772 wheels!? While 1.9" I.D. may work well for the Ansmann and Comp tires which have a taller section and different profile (the tire inner part fits into the deeper part of the wheel section), these street tires should fit the outer part of the wheel because they have approximately the same width (35 vs 34mm) - This is a 48mm into 56mm fit which may deform the tire surface considerably. Quote
daniele Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 Well, are they 1.9" (48mm) I.D. and can they fit on the Lego 44772 wheels? 1,9", yes. I found for 19€ in a webstore here in italy. Quote
mrklaw Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 Do you think 9398 could handle a little weight in the wheels? Great thread though, I was thinking its a shame that Lego do a cute crawler but have rock hard tyres, good to hear there are alternatives. DLuders, your plumped vs non-plumped,nthose are the same tyres tight? You're just talking about how mounting them differently changes their appearance? Quote
DLuders Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 (edited) @ Conchas: The Lego 44772 wheels would be most appropriate for those low-profile, Duratrax DTXC9708 directional RC tires above. They have an Inside Diameter (I.D.) of 1.9" (48mm), and their width (35mm) is very close to matching the outermost rim's width (34mm). It could be a substitute for the Lego 44771 "Black Tire 68.8 x 36 ZR" (right picture below) from the 8070 Supercar II set: When I was stretching the Rok Lox 1.9 Comp Tires onto the Lego 44772 wheels, it seemed like I was handling a giant Rubber Band. The rubber is VERY SOFT -- much softer than the Lego tire compound. I believe that stretching the 48mm-I.D. Duratrax tire onto the (nominal) 56mm-O.D. Lego 44772 wheel will work, even if the tire's sidewall is low-profile. The fact that the Duratrax 1.9 tires are advertised with "foam inserts" makes me believe that the tire wall thickness is quite thin and stretchy. Without the foam inserts, the rubberband-like tire would collapse. I just ordered a set of four of these Duratrax tires for USD $11.95 , and will let you know how they fit on the Lego 44772 wheels when they arrive. @ mrklaw: Yes, I think that when I place the Rok Lox 1.9 Comp Tires onto the 9398 4x4 Crawler in a few weeks, they will handle the weight fine. Recall "The Mind"'s picture of his new, colorful 9398 4x4 Crawler next to his grey 8297 Off Roader II -- the models are VERY CLOSE in size and weight. In this post, Traktor reports that the Shipping Weight of the 9398 box is 2.3Kg (5.07 lb) -- the same as the 8297 box. Yes, the "Plumped" and "Non-Plumped" tires are the same Rok Lox 1.9 Comp Tires, mounted on the Lego 44772 wheels in a different manner. Mounting them differently changes their appearance. The "Plumped" version probably performs better at Crawling because of the slightly larger surface area and bulging sidewall lugs that can grab on the edges of rocks better. The "Non-Plumped" version looks better, and perhaps is more realistic. Edited July 8, 2012 by DLuders Quote
