I can't find a pic anywhere, which is odd considering it seems to be the most readily available of the old posters. Unfortunately there is no good database online... So here is a low quality pic I took to give the idea:

Phes, in fact there is one for sale in your neighborhood so to say. The seller is Australian:

If I did not have it, I would have taken a shot at it but I have a copy. Does anyone know if this came with a certain (large) set such as the SES? That ship is pictured in the back so it was made around 1993 / 1994 I would think.

I hope I did not spoil the soup regarding your "opportunity to procure one" by openly giving these details.

That's some purty posters there. I have the booklet that came with the Carribean Clipper. Though it was wet and all the pages are stuck, but at least the pirate section is viewable X-D . I found on ebay that somebody had a bag that you got when you bought the BSB, would this be considered rare?

It must be 1994 since if you look very closely the Islander sets in the bottom left hand corner each set "New" written diagonally in yellow triangles.

But if you want to dig further then look at the Pirate pages in the 1994 catalogue - its the exact same picture.

Yep 94, it came with the mid-sized islander set just about everywhere, and in a few other sets in different areas of the world (from my own experience).

The only mid sized Islander set was 6264 Forbidden Cove but I distinctly remember some catalogues saying that 6292 Enchanted Island included a poster too, however it didn't really give an indication to what that poster was. So its probably the same one.

If this needs verification and confirmation I would be forced to rip open my sealed copy of 6264... And that is what this thread is all about! :-D

I have a 6278 enchanted island (1994 first release, not the 6292 legend) with broken seals that did not have this poster. It could have been taken out by its former owner since seals were cut or perhaps it never came with it. Only found the instructions and a service pack leaflet. A huge set like that should include the big islander poster. :-||

Forbidden cove included the poster in NA and Europe, Enchanted Island seems to have if you were lucky (in the UK it did, and Aus/NZ often got the same variants as the UK).

I like that poster. I think I used to have it, but my mom once went on a throwing-away spree and threw away most of my small Lego catalogs. >:-( Then again it could be somewhere in my box of instructions...

Now there are TWO votes for preserving MISB sets. ;-) Basically all I'll say is that deciding to open a MISB set or keep it sealed depend on if you have $$$ in mind (not necessarily making money, though).

As for the number of MISB sets in existence: we can't really know how many copies of any one set were made, but I don't believe there are all that many left.

I might elaborate more tomorrow, when I finish catching up on reading from my two week hiatus

100th post. :)

Having opened my MISB 6286....you can guess what my answer will be.

As the box wasn't in the finest shape, it was more than worth the extra bit to me to actually get all of the pieces in non chewed, folded, or mutilated condition.

Then again, I've just had lousy luck with seciond hand lego lately.

Welcome back Mr Akkhraziel! It has been quite a while since we've read from you.

I thought you procured that Skulls Eye Schooner over 2 years ago and at the time you mentioned you were having problems receiving chewed, folded, or mutilated pieces. That problem isn't still plaguing you is it?

To say the truth, I wouldn't buy a MISB set, because I want the LEGO, and so I would just buy an open set to be able to hmm "Play" with.

My thoughts exactly. LEGO for me is for playing, not for displaying :) .

Well I guess it all depends on the set.... 8-|

During my childhood Pirate LEGO was still in production so there were millions of MISB Pirate LEGO sets. Opening them was no problem because at the time it never occurred to me that one day they'd become rare and valuable. How things change...

Wow, what a question! I've actually thought about this before, ever since discovering the MISB sets on Ebay. I haven't seen a MISB Pirate set since 2000, when I found two or three Pirate polybags in a small town Target. I of course bought them immediately and opened them, because LEGO is for playing with, not for displaying in the packaging! A nicely kept box provides the same collector's benefits as a sealed one, with the added benefit that you get to build the set.

That said, I've come up with the following contingency plan in case I do ever run accross another MISB Pirate set at a reasonable price (unlikely):

#1: If the set is a copy of one I already have complete in good condition (which at this point is limited to the BSB, the Caribbean Clipper, and Forbidden Island) I will keep it sealed, sell it on Ebay, and buy myself plenty of used Pirate LEGOs with the resulting booty.

#2: If the set is one I don't have...sorry, all bets are off. I won't be able to get it home fast enough, and when I do, I'll have the sweet nostalgic joy that comes with punching through that thin cardboard, ripping open those awesome polybags with the tiny holes, and sorting through the bright shiny new LEGO pieces! :'-)

I doubt I'd ever open up an older MISB set. Then again, I'm pretty impulsive...

PS. Does anyone have statistics on how many of the Pirate sets originally got sold back in the day?

Once you open a MISB set, it's value decreases so much, that you would regret opening it later. I always buy lego sets and say "I want to keep this in the package, so in years to come, I'll make big bucks", but I cannot resist the temptaion. I will only keep a set MISB if it is old, or discountinued. (And if I only have one of them. If I bought 50 in bulk, I would open one or two, and keep the rest sealed)

I don't know if this was mentioned earlier, but check this out X-O X-O X-O

Check ALL his pirate things.

It depends if I want to sell it. Which I probably wont. So in this case, open 'em up, build 'em up, display 'em up, keep the box in it's box shape. I like to keep the boxes of all the lego sets I buy because its a way to still keep everything you get. especially for the money you paid for it!
