For a MOC incorporating all flagships of Lego Space (not including Star Wars), I'm trying to figure out which sets can actually be considered "flagships". Of course, I have an idea of my own, but I am certainly biased, so I'd like to put the question to you:

Which five sets must be included in a definite list of flagships of Lego Space?

Sets from Star Wars are not eligible. Other than that, any theme is allowed.

Appendix:

I posted this in General Discussion rather than the Sci-Fi forum because I'd like to know everybody's opinion, not only those with an affinity towards Lego Space.

Sorry, but we try to keep the forum organised according to theme.

Obviously everybody will have their own ideas, these five I consider to be flagship sets-

6985 Cosmic Fleet Voyager (will own this soon!)

6783 Sonar Transmitting Cruiser (one small Bricklink order left then I'll finish mine)

6986 SP I Mission Commander (wish I never sold this!)

6984 SP II Galactic Mediator (never owned it but looks fantastic!)

5974 SP II Galactic Enforcer (my favourite ship of all time, will never part with it!)

924 Galaxy Explorer (Classic Space)

6954 Renegade (Blacktron)

7644 MX81 Hypersonic Operations Aircraft (Mars Mission)

5974 Galactic Enforcer (Space Police III)

7066 Earth Defense HQ Alien Conquest. I know I know its not technically a ship, but it is the earth "flagship" set)

I would also consider

6987 Galactic Mediator (Space Police 2)

5984 Lunar Limo

6975 Alien Avenger

as being interesting entries.

I honestly don't think that you can make a list like this without having the Space Police II Galactic Mediator and the Ice Planet 2002 Deep Freeze Defender on it. They're some of the most highly-rated and recognized starships in LEGO Space history, and they've continued to influence Space designs since (the SP3 Galactic Enforcer, also fantastic, was clearly inspired by both of these vessels).

Here's my list, without any particular order.

Space Police II Galactic Mediator

Ice Planet 2002 Deep Freeze Defender

Space Police III Galactic Enforcer

Spyrius Saucer Centurion

Explorien Starship

These are the "main" Space flagships to me, although there are a few others that deserve recognition as well. You could also make a good argument for the Mega Core Magnetizer, which is such a classic that it hardly matters that it's technically a ground vehicle. The Earth Defense HQ is outstanding as well.

Thanks for the comments so far, it's very helpful. The thing is that I don't want to rely on my "feeling" alone when choosing who the most flagship-py spaceships in the Lego Space program are. I would inevitably be biased towards the ships I have childhood memories of, I guess.

My list of flagships would be:

#7644 MX-81 Hypersonic Operations Aircraft (Mars Mission, 2008)

#6982 Explorien Starship (Exploriens, 1996)

#5974 Galactic Enforcer (Space Police 3, 2009)

#497 / #928 Galaxy Explorer (Classic, 1979)

#6979 Interstellar Starfighter (UFO, 1997)

#6980 Galaxy Commander (Classic, 1983)

#6985 Cosmic Fleet Voyager (Classic, 1986)

#6984 Galactic Mediator (Space Police 2, 1992)

#6973 Deep Freeze Defender (Ice Planet, 1993)

#6986 Mission Commander (Space Police, 1989)

(Not necessarily in that order - this is sorted according to set weight.)

I did restrict it to spaceships, so as much as I agree that

Further, I excluded a few themes. I love Alien Conquest, but arguably it's not in the same "universe" as most other Lego Space themes. The same can be said for Space Port and City Space, which is why it also doesn't feature here. In fact, I'm struggling with including Life on Mars.

However, there are a number of reasons why I am not quite happy with this list:

Overrepresentation:

Classic Space is a bit overrepresented, with three ships.

The same could be said for Space Police, I assume.

Underrepresentation:

Then, a couple of themes don't feature at all, which are the following:

- M-Tron

- Blacktron/Blacktron 2

- Life on Mars

- Futuron (!!!)

- Spyrius

- Unitron

These have ships, but they usually fall short in size and weight to the ships listed above. The largest or most prominent ships in these themes seem to be:

#6969 Celestial Stinger (Insectoids, 1998)

#6956 Stellar Recon Voyager (M-Tron, 1990)

#6954 Renegade (Blacktron, 1987)

#6981 Aerial Intruder (Blacktron 2, 1991)

#7315 Solar Explorer (Life On Mars, 2001)

#6932 Stardefender 200 (Futuron, 1987)

#6939 Saucer Centurion (Spyrius, 1994)

#1789 Star Hawk II (Unitron, 1995)

But I feel they can't be easily included as this would make exlusion of the following sets quite arbitrary:

#6862 Secret Space Voyager (M-Tron, 1991)

#6929 Star Fleet Voyager (Classic, 1981)

#6783 Sonar Transmitting Cruiser (Classic, 1988)

However, if you include those, then Classic Space is even more overrepresented!

Any thoughts?

legomr, you have a very well thought-out list there, and I understand your conflict. I would suggest using the following criterion to help further decide what and what not to use: Does it really feel like a flagship? It's an important distinction: Flagships aren't always the biggest, though they do tend to be big and fancy and multifinctional. They are however top-rank command ships. By this rule, the Stellar Recon Voyager and Secret Space Voyager would be out (well, you might make a case for the former getting in) because while they're big, they don't have a command feel to them - the big command vehicle of M-Tron is definitely the Mega-Core Magnetizer, a ground vehicle. The Hypersonic Operations Aircraft, big S.O.B. though it is, is also ruled out - it's plainly an attack craft and not a command craft. Heck, 7691 ETX Alien Mothership Assault barely makes the grade. The Solar Explorer, however, is clearly the ship in charge when it comes to Earth's astronauts from Life on Mars, it's definitely got administrative function to it.

My picks would be:

#7315 Solar Explorer

#6982 Explorien Starship

#6980 Galaxy Commander

#6985 Cosmic Fleet Voyager

#6975 Alien Avenger

#6979 Interstellar Starfighter

#6986 Mission Commander

#6984 Galactic Mediator

#5974 Galactic Enforcer

#6973 Deep Freeze Defender

#7691 ETX Alien Mothership Assault

And last but not least (and technically first XD):

#928 Space Cruiser and Moonbase AKA #497 Galaxy Explorer.

Dishonorable mention to #7065 Alien Mothership because while its name means it should have been this... yeah nope. Doesn't look all that commanding, doesn't have anything to let it function as a command/base ship... Darnit LEGO.

(picks bolded and bumped up a few sizes so that anyone not interested in my rambling can spot the list easily and hop right to it)

Out of that complete list of flagships, I'm not sure I could really pick five for your originally-asked-for list.

To legomr, I wouldn't worry so much about Classic Space being "overrepresented". It lasted much longer than pretty much every other line, didn't?

#497 / #928 Galaxy Explorer

#6980 Galaxy Commander

#6984 Galactic Mediator

#5974 Galactic Enforcer

#6954 Blacktron Renegade

Something about the #6985 Cosmic Fleet Voyager just doesn't quite do it for me... Maybe once I get this in hand I'll change my mind, though! The #6973 Deep Freeze Defender gets an honourable mention from me as well... I was tempted to put it on the list, but it's design is so influenced by the Galaxy Commander that it just seemed weird having both there.
