legolandia Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Someone (and there are too many pages to find out who) mentioned that it's a disappointment to see a moulded Rancor after so many brick-built incarnations of the creature. I agree with them. There was a reason LEGO hed back from releasing this set for so long, and that was because a) a moulded Rancor is such a ridiculous concept, why doesn't LEGO just mould everything if they're going to do that, and b) designing a rancor pit set where both the pit and rancor are composed of bricks would be far to pricey for hardly anyone to be willing to pay. Although I love seeing sets from the original Star Wars saga, this was a dodgey move. Why is it such a ridiculous concept? Lego has historically moulded the large animals in the Star Wars line. So a moulded rancor is a logical continuation of the tradition. As a minifigure/character collector I am very happy that Lego decided to do so. From the playability point of view a brick built Rancor would be not only too big but also too fragile to play with and complete;y out of proportion with the rest of the sets of the same theme (Jaba's palace, skiff, etc).
Bilbo Baggins Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 I believe that a brick-built Rancor would look cooler and would be on scale
nrg Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Aug 1. - from this time we can get a rumor list in any time !!!
commanderneyo Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Aug 1. - from this time we can get a rumor list in any time !!! Shouldn't be too long, I'd say we'll have those rumours by the 10th. Last year it was the 6th, 7th or 8th, and even before that we had Mirandir's info for the 2012 rumours.
Brickadeer Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Good question. If TLG is willing to mold Rancors, they could mold any animal! What's to stop them from molding bears? Or Dewbacks? Or Dragons? Or-- heaven forbid-- horses? We had better hope that TLG doesn't continue down this slippery slope or they might run the risk of being consistent about which animals are pre-molded! I agree that consistency is an issue. After the subsequent release of a molded Dewback, Jabba, Taun Taun, Wampa and maybe other creatures, a brick-built Rancor would have been quite an oddity. I believe that if they were releasing a brick-built Rancor, there'd be a lot of complaints and demands for a molded Rancor.
nrg Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Check this out ! http://www.flickr.com/photos/fbtbnet/7569291738/in/set-72157630574248028/lightbox/ Hidden secret place inside - the rock with the black part! You can open it !
The_Chosen_1 Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Good catch. Looks like the perfect place for a minifigure to hide.
Aanchir Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 I believe that a brick-built Rancor would look cooler and would be on scale Anything larger than the scale of this Rancor would be very expensive, and probably even more so if brick-built instead of specially-molded. If a brick-built Rancor at a realistic scale were in fact included, then either the price point would have to be bumped up dramatically or a lot of the other environment details would have to be cut-- and even with the smaller, brick-built one, people are complaining about how the Rancor Pit itself is too small and lacking in detail! Also, as I mentioned, a decent-looking brick-built Rancor would probably involve a lot of complex building techniques, which would essentially mean it could never appear in any sets besides a UCS-type set aimed largely at advanced builders and adult collectors. Personally, I think having things at a realistic scale is overrated. Even in LEGO City, or the more AFOL-oriented Modular Buildings, things are typically scaled down significantly. "Minifigure Scale" as any kind of absolute standard is largely a myth, since the scale of sets that include minifigures depends more on what looks OK and is still affordable than on how accurate or realistic it would be if you swapped the minifigures out for similarly-sized human figures. Just look at how few LEGO City street vehicles fit the appropriate number of passengers for a vehicle in that class, or for that matter how there are no LEGO road plates with more than two lanes.
Brickdoctor Posted August 1, 2012 Posted August 1, 2012 Personally, I think having things at a realistic scale is overrated. I agree. System sets are often not to-scale, and brick-built, to-scale rancors have been built before. If you want a properly scaled brick-built Rancor, you can just build it yourself. Otherwise, this rancor fits into the System scale perfectly.
Esvald Forceswoop Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 Come on, nothing? Nothing expect the Rancor Pit? :(
Bilbo Baggins Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 I wonder what is inside that Secret Hidden place, well only time will tell
Masked Builder Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 Come on, nothing? Nothing expect the Rancor Pit? :( We just have to wait for the retail catalogs to be sent out.
jasbury Posted August 3, 2012 Posted August 3, 2012 Even if the rancor is slightly to small, It's still a must get figure for me. I'd take detail and quality over a poorly done larger rancor. Plus, does 1/2 of an inch make that big of a difference for displays?
coolguy2323 Posted August 3, 2012 Posted August 3, 2012 Hopefully we get more TOR sets next year. I will say the rancor pit looks cool though.
nrg Posted August 4, 2012 Posted August 4, 2012 Guys! The retailer catalog is alredy out!! The technic sets has been reveald . So , LSW info will leak soon hopefully.
commanderneyo Posted August 4, 2012 Posted August 4, 2012 Guys! The retailer catalog is alredy out!! The technic sets has been reveald . So , LSW info will leak soon hopefully. I hope so too. I'm personally hoping 2013 has a better TCW showing than 2012 did. I'm not so much talking about the number of TCW sets released this year, but more the set choice...
The_Chosen_1 Posted August 4, 2012 Posted August 4, 2012 That's great news! Hopefully we'll hear something within the next week.
nrg Posted August 4, 2012 Posted August 4, 2012 Jedinews.cu.uk reveals the rumor list always on tuesday.
Super Brick Collector Posted August 4, 2012 Posted August 4, 2012 Jedinews.cu.uk reveals the rumor list always on tuesday. Fantastic, should prove to be a good week if we get that list.
Darthluke824 Posted August 4, 2012 Posted August 4, 2012 I can't wait to see pictures. Its like Christmas but really early!!
Bilbo Baggins Posted August 4, 2012 Posted August 4, 2012 Are we also getting images from the sets on tuesday or just the names of the sets?
sealslip3 Posted August 4, 2012 Posted August 4, 2012 Jedinews.cu.uk reveals the rumor list always on tuesday. Where did you see that? I checked this page (LINK) and last year's winter rumors came out on a Friday, and the year before's were on a Monday...
jasbury Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 Are we also getting images from the sets on tuesday or just the names of the sets? Just names. And until the pictures come out, the list could be wrong.
