Faefrost Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 So will we be seeing anything else today? Or is the Rancor pit the only SW news for the show? I was kinda hoping they would show off a few more new minifigs? (although seeing the new CMF series 8 has buffered that a bit )
Admiral-Ackbar Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 So will we be seeing anything else today? Or is the Rancor pit the only SW news for the show? I was kinda hoping they would show off a few more new minifigs? (although seeing the new CMF series 8 has buffered that a bit ) This is most likely the only news for today, but there may be much more tomorrow as Saturday is to be the Star Wars day for Lego at SDCC.
Spider-Man Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 The Rancor is easily 3x the size of Hulk. Even by just looking at it, it's pretty easy to see that it's roughly triple the height of your typical minifigure. Idk about three times the size. If you stand a Hulk side by side with a regular minifigure he towers over them. Hopefully tomorrow at the Star Wars day we will get better comparison pictures

Admiral-Ackbar Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 And maybe a picture of Jabba's Palace above the Rancor Pit! I don't want to see this picture because I know if I do, I will have to buy both Jabbas Palace and this! My wallet is crying for mercy as it is!
wyrm12 Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 Actual (but blurry) photo of the Rancor Pit set from Yodasnews.com: http://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/471231_10151260766299867_907659474_o.jpg
HJR-Holland Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 Iet ies so bieg!! Is that a dark tongue, or a shadow?
ZO6 Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 My memory of the scene in question may be a bit foggy, but I had thought it was a skull that Luke threw at the switch-- and a skull is present in the set. As for a gap in the rocks where Luke can hide, it may not be the most accurate representation, but do you see how one of the rock columns is slightly thicker than the other? It looks like that might hinge or break open to create a hiding place. You're definitely right about it being a skull thrown at the switch. After a lifetime of watching the OT on VHS, it always appeared to be a rock that was thrown. Even after watching RotJ on Blu-ray a number of times, I still perceived it as being a rock. However, I just watched that scene again right now specifically looking out for what Luke is throwing, and ta-da! Skull. I did previously notice the difference with the pillar and figured it would be engineered to either "explode" off, or else just be used as a place to hide a minifigure. Building dark indoor scenes can be difficult for a lot of reasons. Not only do you want open space for a person's hands when they're playing with the set, but you want there to be openings to let the person playing with the toy see inside, as well as to let in a decent amount of light (even in a scene that should be very dark, you're reducing play value if a person can't see what they're playing with). Thus a cave that is open on only one or two sides (and not even the top, when Jabba's Palace is connected) would reduce play value greatly. It should also be considered that having the Rancor Pit seem to continue further than what's shown offers additional play value since the Rancor is a very bulky design that wouldn't have too much space to move around if the Rancor Pit were walled in on three sides. I don't see any white bricks at all in this picture of the Rancor Pit. If you're talking about the slopes, those look light gray to me. Compare them to the skeleton parts, which are white. Likewise, I don't see any tan parts-- they all appear to be dark tan, like a lot of the parts from Jabba's Palace. You probably are right that the parts that look white are simply light grey, and that the tan ones are dark tan. Colours often tend to look off in promotional pictures such as the one we've been provided with. Either way, I still stand by the structure being too many colours. Also, the walls of the pit in the movie are pretty much entirely made up of large round-ish boulders. This doesn't really come across at all in the way that the structure is built. I wouldn't normally do this much complaining about a set, it's just that the bar has been raised so high in recent years in terms of what is possible with Lego bricks. *Edit* - Another pic of the pit has just surfaced, and you're right about the grey and dark tan. On a different note, what's up with the piece that activates a play function to be red this year and thus stick out like a sore thumb? This is becoming a trend. The werewolf launching mechanism in The Werewolf set from the MF theme is a big red piece that is completely out of place. The big mobile launcher in the Uruk-Hai Army set has an obvious red piece on it too. Now the Rancor pit has the same thing with the technic piece(s) which will be used to hold up/released the gate. Won't kids be able to figure out how to work the play functions in their sets without having to put in a red piece that doesn't fit the rest of the set? Oh well. It'll be interesting to see if the set can redeem itself a bit more once we see more of it hopefully over the next couple of days.
lightningtiger Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 The four pyramid thingies on the top of the pit fit into 4 2x2 holes on the bottom of the palace. Ah, thanks 'prateek'....that would explain the style of the pit then.....wonder what those technic pieces mostly hiding behind the portcullis ?
AngryChair Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 I wonder if the modularity of Jabba's palace will set the stage for future sets with the same capabilities! I could totally see a Jedi Temple that you can buy 3 or 4 sets and combine them all to make an even bigger temple! Or even with Palaptine's arrest coming up. It has all those technic pin holes all over, so maybe there will be stuff you can add on? This would be a very good idea if TLG did decide to go in this direction. Nice idea Spider-Man
Admiral-Ackbar Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 (edited) I would assume they can be pushed in or pulled out to hold the gate in place or something like that. Edited July 13, 2012 by grahamm5001
legolandia Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 The Rancor is looking great and the minifigures are nice (especially Malakili, the rancor keeper). The Rancor pit itself is quite average and what has made it appealing is its ability to integrate with the rest of Jabba's Palace. I sincerely do hope that Lego has decided to bring out a Jedi Temple set in 2013. It is waaaaaay overdue.
lightningtiger Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 Does anyone get the feeling.....skiff, palace, pit....maybe a new sail barge as well eh ?
JackJonespaw Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 Does anyone get the feeling.....skiff, palace, pit....maybe a new sail barge as well eh ? I hope so, but we've had a sail barge more recently than the others.
Spider-Man Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 I think the initial Sail Barge was VERY well done. I don't know how much more they could do to make it that much better, besides exclusive figs which jack the price up
Bilbo Baggins Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 The rancor seems huge, but it doesn't appear to me as to be minifigure scale,
lightningtiger Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 The rancor seems huge, but it doesn't appear to me as to be minifigure scale, You do have a point there, but kids won't care if the rancor is a little on the short side....they'll still stick Sponge Bob in his mouth !
Spider-Man Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 You do have a point there, but kids won't care if the rancor is a little on the short side....they'll still stick Sponge Bob in his mouth ! I am pretty sure we have all thought about what figures we can terrorize with the Rancor! I know I got my pick!
lightningtiger Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 I am pretty sure we have all thought about what figures we can terrorize with the Rancor! I know I got my pick! Agree with you 100% ! So tomorrow we shall see which figures we'll get next year, like we have seen next years Super Heroes already.
Rez Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 I dig it! The "Jabba's Palace" related themed sets are the first Star Wars sets I'll be purchasing since the minifig Death Star.. ie, the first SW sets in years! Someone before mentioned that it's too bad there isn't a pillar to hold up the "tower" section from Jabba's Palace.. what if we get another set, as the droid torture chamber or dungeon? EVD209 or whatever his name was and the gonk droid are the only 2 figures from the original Palace sets not to be updated.. while they are awesome as is, it would be an easy way to get out yet another "droids" set and complete the look of the Palace! ALSO- THANKS to whoever posted that picture of the lego thinktank room or whatever it is- I SEE UNRELEASED DINOSAURS!! off to action themes to celebrate.
HawkLord Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 I was on the fence with the Jabba's Palace set and now that I see this, I might skip on the Jabba stuff altogether. The Rancor looks nice, but is alittle small.
Ceroknight Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 Does anyone get the feeling.....skiff, palace, pit....maybe a new sail barge as well eh ? A new sail barge with slave Leia?
wesker Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 A new sail barge with slave Leia? A new Slave Leia would be amazing, especially with how detailed minifigures have gotten in recent years.
lightningtiger Posted July 14, 2012 Posted July 14, 2012 A new sail barge with slave Leia? Now we are talking ! Like I wrote we have to wait until tomorrow right ?
