drakmin Posted June 11, 2024 Author Posted June 11, 2024 Some progress with laser cannon housing. It has 3 pieces of Technic axles on top of each other to fight gravity. (though this limits a bit of detail amount I can pull off around the "heatsink" area) Quote
dmaclego Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 You, my friend, are insane and I mean it in the most positive way :) . Went back through this topic (some 7 years) to find a photo of the nose and I have a question, as your fantastic model constantly evolves - albeit somewhat glacially ;) : that version of the nose, although perfectly shaped, had a large rift in the middle - did you manage to cover it or re-designed/plan to re-design it? Sucram Posted June 16, 2024 Posted June 16, 2024 The design for the engine intake or whatever it is on the wing is unreal, doesn't even look like Lego Quote
Max_Lego Posted June 16, 2024 Posted June 16, 2024 Now this is the scale where you can get very accurate to the source material... Beautiful! 4 hours ago, Sucram said: engine intake or whatever it is on the wing Canonically they are retro-thrust nozzles (which makes sense, yet they do look more like intakes) Quote
drakmin Posted July 19, 2024 Author Posted July 19, 2024 (edited) note wing not fully inserted... Edited July 19, 2024 by drakmin Quote
Jim Posted July 19, 2024 Posted July 19, 2024 So glad you are still dedicated to finishing this model. Quote
Geihlen Posted July 19, 2024 Posted July 19, 2024 A big reason I pop into this part of the boards every day is to see if there's been updates to this project. It really is incredible and I'm glad to see you're still plugging away with it. Quote
joebiwankenobi Posted July 30, 2024 Posted July 30, 2024 You've been diligent and dedicated for over a decade on this project and it is paying off handsomely. I cannot wait to see the finished product of your arduous labor and I'll be curious to know how much the model weighs, too. Looks far larger than 1/18 scale. I'm assuming somewhere around 1/12 or larger? Quote

jimmynick Posted August 6, 2024 Posted August 6, 2024 The scale of this thing is absolutely mental. It's going so well. Can't wait til the end! Quote
drakmin Posted August 18, 2024 Author Posted August 18, 2024 Managed to fill engine rear surfaces. Quite tricky round and triangular areas. :) Quote
drakmin Posted December 1, 2024 Author Posted December 1, 2024 Front cone acceptable. Might be improved and weathered later. Moving forward!Dont mind the clear tape which is curretly holding a few pieces together. This will be replaced by internal connecting structure. Quote
dmaclego Posted December 3, 2024 Posted December 3, 2024 I'm so glad you persevere. What a fantastic nose! And fits the fuselage like a glove. Please, don't stop. Quote
Vouatch Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 yeah, it's really a fantastic project you are doing. Be proud of it and go to the end! How do you prepare each parts? in STUD.io or other software? for exemple the nose seems only "acceptable" for you, is it because you did it directly without any previous tests? what about the weight or the space ship? should begin to be heavy !!! I forgot... do you plan to make a droid mech to put inside? Quote
bruh Posted December 17, 2024 Posted December 17, 2024 wow. I usually putter around in the technic forum, but decided to check this out and boy was it a good idea!! This is actually insane! I can't believe the level of detail on this! What a boss job. PLEASE finish this so I can see the result! Quote

I forgot... do you plan to make a droid mech to put inside? Thank you! I build iteratively with trial and error. First version might be cardboard to see roughly the shape. Second version studded or something rough to find out good anchor points and structural areas required. After these steps it gets nice trying to add more detail and definiton via each new iteration. Many times 3rd or 4th version is good enough and the subpart gets to sit for a year for maybe one more revisit :) On 12/17/2024 at 11:19 PM, bruh said: wow. I placed this first version by eye. Looks like the launcher needs to be moved 1-2 studs forwards. Also the rear of the hull might need 1-2 stud extension. Quote
KimT Posted January 11 Posted January 11 This is crazy. So many years spend on this! It is beautiful. I love everything about it - but what I admire the most is your desire to build this while continously revising and redesigning it. You good sir is an inspiration to us all. I've said it before and I will say it again - thank you for sharing your progess with this and for not giving up along the way. Quote
Calanon Posted January 11 Posted January 11 Somehow I don't think I've ever seen this - looking fantastic. Quote
drakmin Posted January 12 Author Posted January 12 I'm trying to improve the torpedo launcher a bit. Currently I'm trying to get A type with slightly angular edges. I have two types of reference images:A Elliptical overall rounded type with two sub variationsB "arrowhead style" (this might be from some toy and might not be accurate at all?) Below is the reminder of the current version: Below I used LBG tape to simulate round front edge of the opening. I am already quite pleased on this version and how it fits the overall shapes. Im real life this version of the launcher does not gather too much visual weight or disturbance. Below area without tape: Do you guys have any suggestions or ideas on how to get more elliptical overall shape? I want to have and remain the already accomplished concativity as well. :)Long curved slopes would do nice shape but there is no reasonable counterpart for the hull side of the opening. 15 hours ago, KimT said: This is crazy. dmaclego Posted January 13 Posted January 13 Hello again, Nobody asked for my opinion, so why not chip in? ;) 1) Fantastic work with the launcher. 2) It looks a tad too thick right now but this (and the thickness of the whole hull) may be just an illusion caused by color scheme. I mean, as long as you keep only the thin red stripe on the side off the hull, it's hard to judge the final look. Buy some red liftarms, do the stripe and then we'll see. 3) As for angular proton torpedo launcher - the cut corners are clearly seen on both Yavin IV full scale X-wing and the original studio model of Red 3 (of which I have lots of close-up photos). I'd go for angles. Quote

Here is very rough red stripe sketch. Due to your great feedback I already made the torpedo launcher 1 plate thinner! I also removed 1 technic beam worth of thickness from the bottom half of the hull.UPPER IMAGE IS NEWEST VERSION: lower hull half is 1 technic beam thinner + torpedo launched 1 tile worth thinner Edited January 16 by drakmin Quote
