The more recent pirate sets for the Imperial Guards actually used a lot of yellow arches and look a little more... childish?

How do yellow arches make the Imperial Guard sets look childish? Their colour scheme has always been yellow and white so I saw yellow arches as just another variation.

I just need more pirate parts!

You better get on BrickLink and eBay right away then! Oh yeah, money comes into it, doesn't it?

Also, I don't have the top castle pieces that add to the overall look as well. It's just not working for me.

You could always use lattice like Sabre Island...

I think there was a distinct switch that you can see to sets that were more colorful. They started reducing the number of weapons, and making things strange color combinations... like Red rowboats with yellow seats. They also began to care less about structure and harmony and more about little blurbs they could write in the catalogs!

Like I said, they cared more about ease of construction (hence the ropes that were attached to studs) and extra little tricks like trap doors and tilting masts, as opposed to look and feel over all. Is anyone going to tell me the Red Beard Runner was better than the Skull's Eye Schooner? Or that the Crossbones Clipper didn't look silly next to the Renegade Runner?

It can't be that the older the sets got the worse they were. I would say the Skull's Eye was superior to the Black Seas Barracuda, and it was developed later, as I would also contend the Imperial Flagship was better than the Caribbean Clipper, so something else must have happened, and I believe it was an intentional shift towards a youth movement somewhere around 1994 or 1995.

I think that Lego has actual reversed the trend to a certain degree. For example, the first rounds of Lego Star Wars I felt the same way about, they were kinda kiddy with odd color combos (see AT-ST and TIE Bomber) and silly add ons, and then they got better, less Junior as of late. But the Vikings and Auquaraider II, as well as Batman sets has restored my faith that Lego is on a comeback... and I hope they revisit Pirates soon.

It's only a matter of time. I will bet money that Lego does offer Pirates once more, and I think it will be so much different than classic pirates. I just hope it's as good.

One can hope! I mean, they did bring back pirates in the form of 4+!

I do suspected we would see some other form of shooting device, crazy traps, and swords that were no long cutlasses. There would also be some great emphasis on individual characters like there was for Knights Kingdom II.
