July 19, 201212 yr Am i the only one who doesnt like these. I dont see the point? Whats the attraction? No offense to those that love them. LIke this and Big Ben etc ~snip~ They pack a lot of detail into a small scale. Building in microscale is a great way to find novel uses for pieces, since the form of each individual part matters more to the overall appearance of the model. It can also be a great deal more affordable than building massive structures at minifig scale or larger. In terms of the sets you listed, they both have different qualities which make them attractive. 10230 Mini Modulars is a collector's piece designed exclusively for VIP members. It's a great display piece for fans of the Modular Buildings, and has a wide selection of tiny parts perfect for any fan of microscale building. Architecture sets like 21013 Big Ben are also display pieces and collector's items. They depict famous landmarks at a smaller scale, and are some of the highest-quality Lego sets currently in production. Each one comes in a sturdy box perfect for storage, and is packaged with a high-quality, durable instruction booklet (which also features info on the landmark in question). These sorts of models certainly aren't for everyone, but they do have their fans, and for good reason. Minifig scale or larger isn't the only way to build with Lego. Sometimes it's good to think smaller. Edited July 19, 201212 yr by Lyichir
July 19, 201212 yr Microscale buildings sure aren't for me either and neither these mini modulars or the architecture series really does anything for me at all. They don't pack as much details, there's no minifigs and/or accessories, no animals, etc... but eh, to each his own. I see these micro scale buildings as just another theme, and not all themes can appeal to everyone. Sometimes, LEGO tries something a bit out of their usual comfort zone (like Bionicle, Mindstorm, those huge and ugly Knights Kingdom figures, LEGO games, etc) - and I'm glad they do. It's always good to be innovative and try new things, and quite often they seem to hit the spot for lots of people. I will say however that the Tower Bridge (which is probably somewhere between micro and mini scale) is pretty impressive, in spite of my favor towards mini scale only buildings.
July 19, 201212 yr You have to remember that everyone has their preferred themes. I could say the same about Star Wars or LotR or Monster Fighter - I simply have ZERO interest in supporting those themes with my money. But others do, and that's what LEGO is aiming for. MOCs like the one below (along with custom Modulars) are what I get my kicks on. Microscale building is no different than any other MOC/official set in that it aims to use pieces in unique ways to accurately portray the designer's vision. Credit here. July 19, 201212 yr I enjoy microscale stuff and the Architecture line is one of my favorite themes but the mini-modulars don't really do that much for me. If I pick one up it will probably be more for the parts than the kit itself. It doesn't look like a _bad_ kit, it just doesn't scream 'buy me' when I see it. To each his own, I guess.
July 19, 201212 yr To me the mini and micro stuff seems far more challenging than minifig or larger scale. I'm not necessarily a huge fan of them and wouldn't normally buy them, but I give huge amounts of credit to moc builders who pull off this scale. They are far more talented than I.
July 19, 201212 yr Lego Ghost, I was the same way you were the micro scale models didnt really do much for me. They didnt impress me or anything like that until I went to brickworld and saw the some microscale builds in person. To me the microscale builds are very hard to photograph well because you want to get close but that shows too much detail, and if you are too far away it just looks not right. You have pictured the mini modulars, I have not built them yet, do have it but haven't built it so I cant speak to that specific set but here are a couple of pictures I took at brickworld of some amazing mocs. These were done by Arthur Gugick Untitled by fluffybunny88, on Flickr This second picture is a bigger scale but still microscale build Untitled by fluffybunny88, on Flickr I have a few more on my flickr page but as I said they do not do the models justice, I think the best way to view a microscale model is from far away first then move closer to look at all of the details and then back away again to see how those details work with the model. July 19, 201212 yr Well, if it's any consolation, I am not too fond of the mini modulars either. I can see how people go mad over it, but it's not for me. I would really like to have VIP-exclusive sets that are a bit more generally appealing. :)
July 19, 201212 yr @fluffyBunny88 Thanks for the images and the links. These are great examples of what microscale models can be and I wish TLG offered kits along these lines. The mini-modulars kit does little for me, but I'd buy those Taj Mahal, Mont St. Micheal, Notre Dame and Tower Bridge models in a heat beat.
