David Thomsen Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 (edited) Ever since I saw the Conquistador minifigure, and also the 'Hamlet' figure that could easily pass for an explorer like Sir Francis Drake, I've been daydreaming about an 'Age of Exploration' theme. It would be a great excuse for more new, pre-pirate-era sailing ships, with various European nations competing against each other for Aztec land. But there are others as well. 'Grandma Visitor' suggest a fairytale theme. 'Minotaur' suggests myths and legends. A lot of figures suggest various different historic eras, like 'Kimono Girl' and 'Roman Soldier' and 'Pharaoh'. There is also the Circus theme and the Music theme that a lot of figures fit in. Which Collectible Minifigure would you like to see developed into a proper theme? Edit: Okay, so my slightly lengthy subject line has been cut short. Can anyone fix it and/or summarise it? Edited July 22, 2012 by David Thomsen Quote
RaincloudDustbin Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 I like the detective and that could be developed into a strong theme- it could also incorporate the ganster! Quote
lorax Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 You have already mentioned the idea of fairy tales, which I would love as a Lego set range. I would also love some historical sets, from around the world. Quote
Amset-Rah Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 I could definitely see a mythological theme working, or a Roman/Greek theme (Look at how many figs we got from Greek/Roman myths or warriors like the Minotaur, Neptune, the spartan, Roman legionnaire, etc.) I always thought Lego should do some kind of rock band/music theme, like let the smaller sets be like a tour bus or small gig but let the big set be a big concert set of some kind, like something out of Guitar Hero. As such different kinds of musicians could be made (Guitarists, rappers, singers, etc) Quote
The Joker1 Posted July 22, 2012 Posted July 22, 2012 Well if you had asked a year ago i would have said monsters with zombies, vampires and werewolves but now we have that theme (horray). So I would have to say robo world where robots controll earth and time travellers (series 7 space marines) have to travel through various time zones collecting parts for a machine that can stop them. Do you mean travel through various time periods? I can drive my Honda through different time zones. But I agree that this has the potential for a lot of cool stuff. The CMF robots seem to be pretty popular and Space Marine makes past space MFs look like they belong in the Friends theme. Also, a lot of the other popular CMFs seem to be historically-related (gladiator, roman, spartan, aztec, etc). A time-travel theme would give them a chance to possibly explore these eras without having to delve too deep into one theme (i.e. an entire theme of Aztecs might be difficult to pull off). Quote

Multiverse Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 There's obviously the Spartan and the Gladiator. I'd also love to see a theme built on the dwarf or elf, or even on the leprechaun. And just because it'd be hilarious, the Bunny Suit Guy. =P Quote
Jareth Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 I'd like a Greek/roman Mythology series, but a return to Fantasy Era castle with elves would also be very appreciated. Argh! Can't decide between the two! Quote
Lightning Dragon Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 (edited) I remember when many Lego fans thought that TLG was going to do an Elves theme. I still would like that to happen. I also would like it if TLG made a Time-Travel theme which others have mentioned. However, I do think too many themes hurts the uniqueness of the CMFs, maybe just one or two would be OK. ticktockclock Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 I mean like exploring Ancient Civilizations, like the Chinese, Romans, Greeks, etc. Yeah Time Cruisers was not anything like that. But perhaps our desire for a REAL time travel theme is a bit overzealous, similar to cuusoo projects for Stormtrooper armies. tlg likely wouldn't load up one theme with so much diversity among sets. Gotta keep options open for the desirability of each era for future themes by themselves I'm sure. Quote

Gotta keep options open for the desirability of each era for future themes by themselves I'm sure. I think there's a serious chance of it. Just look at the advantages - the possibility of reusing various moulds, both historical and sci-fi, from other current themes as well as from the CMFs; the option of creating one or two sets within the theme as a try-out for basically any potential new theme; the ease with which the 'collectability' aspect could be added into the storyline; the fact that time travel is a concept that fascinates an extreme number of persons, children and adults alike, all over the world, making for a sizeable target audience already. Besides, I don't think that sheer diversity within a theme is too much of a problem. Take a look at Atlantis, for example - I don't know about you, but I'd say that my favourite sets were also those which differed mostly from the rest of them - the Portal to Atlantis, the City of Atlantis and even the Squid Gateway (or whatever those were called). If they can keep the collectability aspect, I don't think diversity is going to be a problem. And I think the general fandom would only be keener on an entire theme based on any historical era if it was given a single set representing it. I think the only reasons we haven't had anything like this, outside of Time Cruisers, is that the sales for that line weren't great (and somebody please correct me if they were; I'm just guessing here), since they used that line as a trash bin for all of their extra parts. With good design and proper marketing, I think there's real and definite potential for a Time Travelling theme. =) Quote
fred67 Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 Well if you had asked a year ago i would have said monsters with zombies, vampires and werewolves but now we have that theme (horray). I like monster fighters to a certain extent, but I'm more interested in the monsters than the hokey "theme" of finding moon stones (or whatever they are) and ghost trains and such. One of the things that's inspired me over the course of the CMF series is how many movie themes are possible - and it wouldn't be limited to monsters, you've also got Cleopatra and robots (as you mentioned) - a lot of fun 50's B-movie style sets could be made. Enough that it inspired me to start collecting the LEGO cameras and tape tiles and thinking about making MOCs of movie sets and such. IOW, I think they should revisit the LEGO Studios theme with an expanded universe of movie types. I remember when many Lego fans thought that TLG was going to do an Elves theme. I still would like that to happen. It was a good guess - they did everything but elves (well, not true - the "maps" from fantasy era showed an elf area... best guess is it was obviously cut short by LEGO getting the LOTR license, so they did everything but elves that they showed on the map). They quickly dumped the fantasy era line (which could possibly be seen as a competitor to LOTR), and replaced it with a more "generic," non-fantasy, short-lived castle theme while they developed LOTR sets. Since we're on the subject, though, I always liked fantasy era - it's what got me into the castle theme; and while I'd always wanted them to do LOTR, fantasy era was "good enough" for me, and I wish they'd continued it to include elves (and halflings would have eventually been nice). Since they did do a CMF elf, I'd add that I certainly wouldn't mind seeing a new fantasy era, but it's kind of a catch-22. I want LOTR to continue as long as possible, but I also don't think another fantasy era and LOTR would be done together. So, eventually, when the LOTR/Hobbit theme is over (and since there's not an ongoing TV series like Star Wars, I imagine it will happen not too long after Hobbit part 2 is released), I'd like to see fantasy era creep back in... I know many castle fans don't like the fantasy sets, but I, on the other hand, ONLY liked the fantasy sets, otherwise I'm not a big fan of castle. I also thing a fantasy era line could be expanded - we've already had skeletons (which I wasn't too fond of), dwarves, orcs, and trolls along with the humans - you even had "ridable" fell-beasts (ostensibly dragons), but not only could you add elves and halflings, but any other fantasy characters, too - including fairies and such (an interesting twist, IMO, after reading the first two books of the King killer chronicles). That could include satyrs and centaurs and such. I know I'm reaching, here, but it all starts with the elf - the elf and dwarf were the only figures I collected more than a handful of. Quote
Faefrost Posted July 24, 2012 Posted July 24, 2012 The obvious one is a Galaxy Patrol / Space Marines Space sub theme. I think some sort of Fairy tail theme would work. Or at the minimum a Witches Gingerbread Cottage in a similar type set to the new upcoming Haunted House. An Age of Exploration theme might have issues. Ie the problem with making a theme about Conquistadors is what they are. Conquerors. I'm thinking from the Central and South American standpoint there may be some issues. Granted Lego did manage to step carefully around the whole idea with how they managed to sub divide their Western theme, so you never know. Quote

Jargo Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 Winter sports would be good. Ice rink, dual purpose. First for figure skating and second for ice hockey. Slalom ski slope with a ski lift along the side. Little winding lever at each end to make the lift go up and and down . Smooth surface for the skiers to whizz down on. Snowboard halfpipe, They could redo the gravity games stuff with a bit more flair and inventiveness. A tobogan ice track would also be cool and bring in a harmless competitive game sort of vibe. Shove a tobogan down the track and see who gets furthest. Would require new pieces to make the track but straight and curved in combinations would work and not be cost prohibitive I suppose. Dog sledding team would be cool too. With some sort of rubbery harness and collar thingy to attach a few dogs to the front of the sled. Ski lodge, essential to have a base to head out from and somewhere to warm up after being on the piste etc. Snowmobile, A small set with a couple of those and some conifers. Snowcat, Need to get supplies to the lodge somehow. A fat sled tacked on the back with crates and stuff covered by a cargo net and a plough attachment that can be fitted to the front. Dual purpose vehicle. Pontoon plane, For bringing those winter sports persons up the mountain. Though a helicopter would work too. Pontoon plane seems more fun though. more swooshable. Mountaineering team, because there's always some people idiotic brave enough to climb a mountain when it's pretty much vertical ice. Mountain rescue team, for those idiots brave mountaineers who fall off mountains into ravines and crevasses. Or avalanche search and rescue missions. Plus the winter village theme would tag onto it quite nicely. Sit alongside the lodge and add some hustle and bustle. Have to say I've never been up an alpine mountain in my life but this is what winter sports conjures up to me. If I was an under 12 year old I'd want this stuff. Quote
Oky Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 I think I'd want a Galaxy Patrol theme. Something with the great designs from SP3 and AQ, but with a dark-blue and trans-orange color scheme! They could fight against hostile robots or aliens. I also like the time travel idea that was mentioned, something along the lines of Monster Fighters, but with different time periods instead of different monster themes. The problem with that, however, would be that you would only get one or two sets from one time period, which I can't really call a "proper theme". A fairy tale theme sounds nice too, but I think I'd prefer a line based on classic Disney movies. It was a good guess - they did everything but elves (well, not true - the "maps" from fantasy era showed an elf area... best guess is it was obviously cut short by LEGO getting the LOTR license, so they did everything but elves that they showed on the map). I doubt that. Fantasy Era Castle was ended back in 2009, and the LOTR license was announced only less than a year ago. Quote

They could fight against hostile robots or aliens. One thing going for this Galaxy Patrol/Space Marine theme idea is that there is no new rumored theme in the horizon for the Sci-Fi genre, so it's very plausible that they will make this as the new Sci-Fi theme following SP3 and AQ in the near future. Unlike the suggested Roman theme, no matter how promising, which may have to take a backseat until the current LOTR/Hobbit line in the Historic theme is finished. One theme I'd like to see be developed from the CMFs is a sports theme. This aspect has been consistent throughout the CMF series, as we've gotten at least one sports-based minifigure in each of the series. Just imagine sets featuring, "a Tennis Grand Slam Match", "American Football Touchdown", "Boxing Championship Bout", "a Baseball Pitch/Batting scene", or even a reboot of the soccer/football and/or a basketball themes (still hoping for a basketball player CMF), not to mention the winter sports. I don't know how well this theme would be received by LEGO fans though I thought it's a good idea to throw out there for future consideration. Quote

No offense, Kiel, but I don't think those are good ideas. The sports themes Lego has done in the past (soccer, basketball, hockey, Gravity Games) worked because you could actually recreate the sport with the minifigs somewhat. With themes like tennis and baseball, all you can do is imagine the minifigs to hit a ball back and forth, and with themes like boxing and football, you can only move the minifigs around and bump them into each other. Not exactly great playability, which is why I think Lego hasn't done them yet and probably never will. But maybe it's just because I don't like sports. Quote

Yeah no worries I understand what you're saying about the lack of playability, and I also have a feeling it wouldn't register much to FOLs, it was just a long-shot suggestion/idea coming from the huge sports fan in me. (though now I'm curious about how many LEGO fans are sports fans also, but that is a topic for another discussion...) Quote
icy brick Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 Gangster, Detective and Salesman (the series 8 one). TLG could (well, they won't ) make a theme of 1930's: the people, houses, cars etc. Here is a few ideas for the sets: - Private Eye's Office: a 18 wide, tan two storey building with an alley next to it. In the upstairs there could be a detective's office with a desk and a hatrack, and the alley could have few of those grey thrashcans and a junkie. Includes: Detective, Citizen and Junkie.(Price: 39.99$) - Diner: quite small old-style american diner with kitchen and thlse old-style booths. Includes: 4 citizens, 2 gangsters on a luch, waiter and a cook. (Price: 33.99$) - Pursuit: an old car with gangsters driving it chased by an cop car. Includes: 2 gangsters and a cop. (Price. 19.99$) - Butchers & Tony's Deli: 2 stores, with cops on a lunch break at the deli, and gangsters extorting protection money from butcher. Includes: Tony(deli owner), Butcher, 2 cops and 2 gangsters other with a baseball bat. (Price: 39.99$) - Godfathers Mansion: a big white mansion with 2 black cars outside with old furniture. Police might be outside to make a bust. Includes: 4 regular gangsters, 2 bodyguards, 6 family members and 8 cops. (Price: 129.99$) - Coleectable Minifigures: 10 figs to collect! Includes: a cop, gangster, butcher, bussinesman, hitman, bodyguard, extorter, and three different citizens. (Price: 2.50$ each) - Cops vs. Gangsters Battle-Pack: battle pack with 2 cops and 2 gangsters. (like the Alien Conquest one) (Price: 9.99$) That's my wish! Quote
