Hmm. An old thread. I tried to read some of it, but 32 pages?

I'll give my take:

For the shared cinematic universe to work there needs to be a sense of relative reality. From the movies I've seen, I didn't get that. Man of Steel is a good movie, that tells the Superman story from an angle that the other movies and TV shows hadn't. But it rushed through so much of Clark's life, that the relative reality is lost.

BVS tries to give us this, but didn't work for me. The narrative is still too rushed, and the aftermath from the previous movie is stuck too much with the perspective of the primary characters. They have to get out of their orbit, and build the world up for the audience.

Suicide Squad moves out to the secondary characters, but without the being familiar with the histories of the characters in the comics (I don't regularly read DC) the bits of backstory aren't enough.

The MCU has multiple platforms to add to this, and has strung out the characters' progression over longer arcs. The DCEU doesn't have that yet. The TV shows, from the little I could stand to watch, aren't built around the movies' direction. The CW shows, to me, are stuck playing to a specific teen audience. (I'm glad Supernatural grew out of that.) I've never gotten into watching Supergirl, having been put off by the promos. Gotham is the only DC TV show that I have really enjoyed, but as a prologue story it doesn't really help here.

The DCEU needs a show (more than one would be better) that directly connects to the happenings of the movies, to help flesh out the universe and give a wider perspective.

DC could have had this years ago, if Smallville had been built upon (it is part of why I like Gotham). I know the show began with a lot of teen focus, but the writing and story direction grew out of that with the characters. There was a shared logic to the existence of powered people, and wider character viewpoints. It also had a grounding in normal peoples' lives that the DCEU movies don't really achieve. If the DCEU can get this kind of commitment, then it may grow into what it is trying to match, namely the MCU.

I hope they get better.

No one thought the new trailer was great? :look:

I loved it. Comedy was great, action sequences look good and Jason Momoa seems to be perfect choice for Aquaman.

I liked the trailer. It had a lot of good moments. But my first problem with it is the CGI, Aquaman just looked really off to me... Along with a few other effects. Second is why is Batman on a horse? I swear these heroes enjoy wasting their time travelling... In the BvS extended cut Superman takes a boat and a bus to Gotham... REALLY!? Thirdly I feel like they keep reusing the same shots of Wonderwoman kicking bad guys over and over again... Can she not do anything else? Fourth thing is I don't want to retread the same things I've already seen on the Flash TV show. I literally have no interest in seeing Barry visit his father and try to come up with ways to prove his innocence.

But overall great trailer

Argh, I really, really, want to be excited for this, but it's hard for me to do so, and I don't think it's necessarily because I've always been a bit more of a Marvel fan. I loved the Justice League animated shows and movies, but I watch these trailers and it just doesn't do it for me. Mostly, I feel the footage looks too gray, and the characters aren't colorful enough. I guess it's also hard to get excited when their last movies have been disappointing, and when Zack Snyder has already proven he shouldn't be directing these films. I'll have to wait and see, but I'm not holding my breath.

Well not everything can be bright and colorful like Marvel. DC likes to take a different approach thats a bit darker. Not everything has to be the same. And sure the last few movies havent been on par, but at least they are trying to fix their mistakes. I can also guarentee they will not repeat the flash tv show storyline with his fathers jail sentence. Zack Snyder has proven he can make exceptional cinematography for these movies just not the best plot. The acting is great and the cgi is mostly on point. The scenary is 10/10. From the trailer, I am 10 times more excited for this movie.

I agree with that. In this video, they actually argue that he should be a cinematographer and not a director. (Link isn't wrong, they have several discussions in a single video, and I've linked to the appropriate time in the video). I understand your point about them not having to do the same as Marvel, but I don't think what I'm saying is Marvel-specific, but mostly about how to translate comics to films. Both Marvel and DC comics have more color. It's a matter of taste, though, and I recognize that, but to me it's like looking at a bunch of grimy costumes.

Snyder made Superman a killer and Batman a mass murderer.  Not having a lot of faith in him.

The trailer looks amazing, almost like they listened to all the criticism of BvS! I'm really hoping it won't be a let-down like Suicide Squad...

I heard that this might be it for Snyder in the DCEU.

My friends alway say to me that Wonder Woman and Justice League are the make or break films. If they fail to please the mass audience, then DC might as well reboot before they waste their money like Fantastic Four 2015 did

Also I've seen so many people complaining about Cyborg being CGI... like sorry, were you expecting tin foil with a bike light or something?

I haven't seen the new trailer yet, but @Quicksilver838 I agree Wonder Woman and Justice League will be make or break it moments for DC and Warner Brothers. If they both fail, the franchise might as well be dead until the next reboot.

It's not quite that straightforward; so far, all three DCEU films have been profitable, with a strong enough support base (despite being so divisive). Even if these next two films follow the pattern, they will still turn a buck and have defenders. They would have to truly crash and burn at the box office for Warner Bros to consider derailing their many (many) plans for upcoming films. And while I can't guarantee this far out what Justice League hype will be on release, Wonder Woman being the first female-lead superhero movie since Elektra in 2005 (twelve years, dang!) is likely to have a strong draw to it on that front, not to mention any other number of factors.

As a big fan of what DC is doing with their films, I don't foresee a reboot any time soon. I hope JL will be the turning point that will bring more fans on-board but it will still make enough money to justify more movies and they are clearly confident enough in their direction to be jumpstarting so many new projects (Gotham Sirens, Nightwing, Batgirl, JL Dark, etc.). If they thought the DCEU was doomed as many keep saying, then they would've cut it off already like with Green Lantern (2011).

hmmmmm I just am not impressed with most of the movies.

Unlike a lot of people I like this interpretation of Superman. Superman has a lot of interpretations. I hate the Jesus ones. This one was less Jesus and more Boy Scout. Imperfect. And unlike some people I don't mind that he killed Zod. Superman in my mind is still willing to kill but only as a last resort so this fits. It obviously pained him to do that. I liked Man of Steel (though the mass destruction of the city was too much).

I haven't liked another movie since then. I had hopes for Batman vs Superman but they made Batman absolutely insane. He was just murdering everyone left and right without caring. WAT? If anything Batman is soooo against killing (so much more than even Superman) he's almost mentally ill. I mean, a universe where Batman just casually kills everyone doesn't make sense assuming that ANY of his villains are still alive. Is the Joker dead? Doesn't seem to be. All those Batman characters you saw in Suicide Squad should be murdered. Batman should have killed them in this universe. Especially since they probably murder, escape from jail, murder, escape from jail, etc (not confirmed but I think it's a somewhat safe bet). Batman should have killed them all. He clearly has no qualms with murderous rampages. IT MAKES NO SENSE! If he's the Punisher he should be killing not ONLY minions but the Super Villains themselves... :/

The TLDR version is just that Batman's character was the worst thing in the world in BvS. Ignoring the muddled story, the terrible Lex Luthor (for the love of God stop giving us this idiotic crazy Lex, give us business man Lex in the style of some of the comics and cartoons), etc... even if the rest was just great I'm not sure I could ignore a MURDEROUS RAMPAGER Batman. It's ridiculous. Half of Batman's character is that he's almost as crazy as his villains and one reason is he lets them freakin' live. lol

Justice League? Meeaaaaahrrrggh..... I think DC did wrong exactly what everyone expected too. They're SKIPPING all the introductory movies and going straight for the group ones. They're trying to fast forward on the success of the Avengers. They haven't laid the foundations in this universe well enough yet. Superman I liked but most people still seem to hate him. Batman's first appearance almost everyone hated. Wonder Woman got some good attention but lets be honest, we saw very little of her but luckily her movie is coming out before Justice League.

Maybe if Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman ALL got good introductions they'd be set. Superman's was mixed. Batman's was terrible. Wonder Woman's is still unproven. (Suicide Squad is ignoreable). I guess I'll become more excited for Justice League if Wonder Woman is good. But at this rate I won't get my hopes up. She needs some good Thor'ish, Captain America'ish treatment. Coming from a world similar to Thor's and being a warrior, but not knowing much of anything about this world (though she's been around for like freakin' 100 years so maybe they're not going to get the opportunity to show this... I'd like to see her struggle with a computer or something Captain America'ish where he just doesn't understand all the references).

It's not been a great universe so far but it might be recoverable... but I'm still probably never going to like Batman in this universe. He just is a terrible murderous person now. At least when half of Metropolis was destroyed it wasn't Superman doing it directly. Batman is just a terrible person now.

As where it stands now, Aquaman is 2018's only slated DCEU film, scheduled for a December 21st release. The DCEU Flash film originally scheduled for sometime 2018 is now on indefinite hold.

Thinking about this Flash film reminded me of this article back from June last year about Jeffrey Dean Morgan expressing his interest in portraying Flashpoint Batman, primarily for CW's Flash. He already portrayed Thomas Wayne in BVS, so although there is nothing to suggest a role in the DCEU Flash film, a Jeffrey Dean Morgan Batman in a Flashpoint inspired Flash movie would be quite something. Besides, Ray Fisher was said to be returning as Cyborg in the movie, maybe that suggests something?

On a different note regarding Lego, the lack of multiple DCEU movies for the middle of 2018 means we'll probably get plenty of comic based sets to compensate, which isn't a bad thing. :classic:

That's a valid point. With studios upping the ante, releasing all of these movies and all, it means that we'll be getting fewer and fewer comic-based waves. That totally stinks as the comic based stuff is typically better than the movie lines. With the brighter colour palate and all.

Back in 2015, when WB announced the DCEU release date lineup, I knew that comic based sets released there on would be little to none. 2018 I thought would have more room maybe, with Aquaman and Flash movies maybe only giving us single retailer exclusive sets.

Now with Aquaman alone being released at the tail end of 2018, it sort of is kind of a relief, giving us plenty of open space. Winter 2018 though may be limited for DC to give room for a presumed third TLBM wave and rumored second minifigure series.

How can someone step down as director at this point in the game. Like don't get me wrong glad to see him gone and my condolences to his family. But this to me is astonishing...

Also how many directors has the DCEU lost in the past year? The Flash one, then the other Flash one, Ben for Batman, then the replacement for Ben and now the guy who's movies has already been filmed and is now stepping down. I don't know if I should be laughing or crying :sceptic:

Wow that is actually rather sad Zack lost his daughter. Although supper strange that Joss Whedon of all people has been tapped to finish the film! Apparently Joss is to Super Hero films to what JJ is for Star Trek and Star Wars; Joss has meddled with both DC and Marvel! In a strange way it makes me wonder if Joss will be trying to top his own Avengers films with Justice League.

In other rumors, Wonder Woman buzz right now is positive suggesting it will be critically a far more successful film critically than the other DCEU films have been so far.
