Mr Man Posted November 2, 2013 Posted November 2, 2013 ...New Zealand travelogue of Dwarves running over landscape. But that's the best bit . I wonder what colour the extended box will be. Perhaps green like FotR. Quote
Spider-Man Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 Smaug's voice is just too awesome Hopefully when we eventually get a LEGO version it will be just as epic! Quote
The_Chosen_1 Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 The new trailer is just too cool!!! Can't wait for December!! Quote
Masked Builder Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 Did anyone else watch the live event yesterday? I thought it was pretty good, glad to see him interacting with the fans. Quote
Fives Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 PJ released this just a few minutes ago. Its the closing credits song for DOS, courtesy of Ed Sheeran. Quote
Leo604 Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 Even if DoS isn't good, it'll be worth sitting through the credits just to listen to this in theatres. Perfect song. Quote
Faefrost Posted November 6, 2013 Posted November 6, 2013 Some minor spoilers from the AUJ extended edition. Overall the added scenes really do change the movie, mainly by giving reasons that make sense. They bring out into the open stuff that was only hinted at. Things that then tie directly and smoothly into LotR. It shows why Thranduil turned away from the Dwarves when Smaug attacked (and no he wasn't simply being megablocks). It clearly lays out why Elrond and the White Council do not want THORIN returning to Erebor. And on the same note it implies what drew Smaug to Erebor in the first place. (Of the seven, four were devoured by dragons, two returned to Sauron before his defeat, the fate of the last Thror's remains unknown). It is wonderful to see this talked about and brought into the lore. The extended Rivendell scenes are particularly rich in new lore and character goodies, although the included musical number is a bit uneven. The Goblin town scenes now play out much more closely to the book or if you prefer the old Rankin Bass movie. A bit deeper bit of the Goblin King interrogating the dwarves, and the books traditional musical number. It's a bit surreal, and I can kinda see why the musical didn't make the theatrical cut. Although it is cool to see for the Tolkien fan. Quote
SheepEater Posted November 6, 2013 Author Posted November 6, 2013 (edited) I really want to watch the AUJ extended edition NOW, but I know a boxset is inevitable in 2015, so I guess I'll wait. Still... These movies are really The Hobbit + The Appendices + a bunch of other stuff we deduced from other Tolkien's writings + purely made up stuff (rabbit sled, Tauriel) Edited November 6, 2013 by SheepEater Quote
Faefrost Posted November 7, 2013 Posted November 7, 2013 One question for those others that have seen the AUJ EE Am I imagining things, or did Gandalf seem just a bit more "friendly" with Bilbo's Mom than we were expecting? Quote
TheLegoDr Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 I didn't care for the first Hobbit movie, but I bought it anyway (mostly for Bilbo). But it sounds like this extended edition blows it out of the water, so maybe I'll rebuy them all when they all come out in extended editions. I have the extended edition LOTR and those are significantly better than the standard editions. Quote
Leo604 Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Would it be a better deal financially and content-wise to wait for the whole boxed collection rather than buying DoS and TABA right when they come out on DVD/Blu-Ray? Quote
Professor Flitwick Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 Would it be a better deal financially and content-wise to wait for the whole boxed collection rather than buying DoS and TABA right when they come out on DVD/Blu-Ray? Nobody knows; we have zero information on the price for the regular DoS DVD/blu-ray, let alone the extended edition, let alone for TABA, let alone the whole collection. It'll be a game of waiting and seeing. Quote
SandMirror38 Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 SPOLER WARNING Smaug will die in film 3.... Quote
Mandate Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 I don't think that classifies as spoilers, other than that the Battle of Five Armies will take place in the 3rd film (which was already widely speculated anyway). Most people already know that Smaug dies in the Hobbit, and those who haven't read the book or heard of the books have realized it anyway, Smaug is the antagonist and the antagonist usually dies, and being a massive dragon it would be almost certain Smaug would die. Quote
Mr Man Posted November 20, 2013 Posted November 20, 2013 Also Smaug isn't in LOTR, you would think that Sauron would like a dragon on side. Quote
Fives Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 We haven't gotten any confirmation on when Smaug will die in the films. He could die at the end of DOS, which to me makes the most sense. PJ left the ends of FOTR and TTT on emotional notes, with the bigger conflicts/battles done. Same with AUJ. I doubt he'd end DOS with a huge dragon flying around. That just isn't a good place to end it, I think. Quote
Mandate Posted November 22, 2013 Posted November 22, 2013 Yeah, but we know he will die sooner or later, so it's not like it's completely unexpected and when the movies premier everyone will know by how the plot takes place whether or not Smaug dies. It's a climatic point, releasing Smaug on a cliffhanger to destroy the Laketown and then starting the next movie off with the biggest foe suddenly dying probably won't happen. Quote
Floundie Posted November 23, 2013 Posted November 23, 2013 I think Smaug's attack on Lake Town might hold off till TABA. There are 18 chapters in the book. AUJ covered 6 chapters + extra material, so the next films should do the same. Chapter 12 ends with Smaug flying off to wreak havoc. Quote
DarthPotato Posted November 24, 2013 Posted November 24, 2013 I think Smaug's attack on Lake Town might hold off till TABA. There are 18 chapters in the book. AUJ covered 6 chapters + extra material, so the next films should do the same. Chapter 12 ends with Smaug flying off to wreak havoc. I completely agree. It would also really suck to have Smaug die in the same movie he's first fully introduced in (and the middle movie of the trilogy at that). The Desolation of Smaug already has so much going on and we've already seen in the trailers that the dwarves will have some sort of fight with Smaug, so that will probably be the finale for DOS. There and Back Again could then probably get away with not even killing off Smaug until they're half an hour in. Quote
