Posted August 2, 201212 yr Looks like the Lego Group is celebrating their 80th birthday with a promo Cake set. The set is the usual polybag promo available with a $50 purchase. http://shop.lego.com/en-US/Birthday;jsessionid=j+UFbckNu5LfVAzVReQgug**.lego-ps-2-1?icmp=SHSitewide_BirthdayGWP Personally, I think it's pretty cool, though I'd probably be able to use a commemorative figure alittle bit more. Considering I have some Legos to buy this month anyway, it works out pretty well. So, what does everyone think of the Lego Cake and more importantly the 80th anniversary of Lego?
August 2, 201212 yr Haha that's a cool little novelty. Nothing special, but it is a nice gesture Better than nothing. Edited August 2, 201212 yr by prateek
August 2, 201212 yr Has it been confirmed if the cake was made to celebrate the 80 years. That's kinda a strange question since the link goes to shop@home and specifically states that it is for LEGO's 80th birthday.
August 2, 201212 yr I think it looks neat with a cute little design. I'll probably end up putting it on my desk at work.
August 2, 201212 yr Around here they're currently repeating the promo Hulk figure. Which I'm perfectly fine with, since I didn't get it the first time around, and might just have a number of Lego sets to get my hands on. =)
August 2, 201212 yr Happy birthday to me! :) A nice freebie, but would of have preferred it if the cake was an actual slice.
August 2, 201212 yr I'm puzzled as to how people can get excited over something like this. It's a tiny white LEGO square with a couple of other random bricks on it! Honestly, if I didn't know what it was, I'd never guess 'cake'...
August 2, 201212 yr I'm puzzled as to how people can get excited over something like this. It's a tiny white LEGO square with a couple of other random bricks on it! Honestly, if I didn't know what it was, I'd never guess 'cake'... Mm, I think I'd recognize it as a slice of cake, albeit a squarish slice cut from a rectangular cake instead of the more archetypal wedge-shaped piece cut from a round one. And how can people get excited? Well, judging from this thread, people aren't exactly "excited" ("...I think it's pretty cool, though I'd probably be able to use a commemorative figure alittle bit more," "Nothing special," "I think it looks neat with a cute little design," "A nice freebie, but would of have preferred it if...," etc.); it's just a nice little surprise (i.e., getting what you pay for plus a small free additional set > getting what you pay for and nothing else). And personally, I think the element being used for the plate, at least, is rare and desirable enough to make it worth buying this set on its own, anyway. Edited August 2, 201212 yr by Blondie-Wan
August 2, 201212 yr I like it - the design is nice. Nothing I would really want to buy, and I'd rather see a minifig with, say, a party hat on.
August 2, 201212 yr It's designed pretty well. I do like it, I'm happy to see it being offered, but I probably wouldn't pay for it if it didn't come free with a purchase. I've gotta agree with JackJonespaw and say I'd rather see a minifig. Party hats all the way!
August 2, 201212 yr Is this something just in the USA then as when I go to the website and change location to UK it no longer appears? It seems that we are not getting anything or will there be something up soon, anyone know?
August 2, 201212 yr There is another gift or anyone who order $50+ on the Lego store online. It is the Lego 80th celebration birthday cake. It looks kinda plain and small, what do you think? http://shop.lego.com/en-US/Birthday?icmp=SHSitewide_BirthdayGWP Edited August 2, 201212 yr by Miren
August 2, 201212 yr You can also get the cake in all German Lego stores between 1 and 10 August if you spend more than €30,- Luckily, I've already planned (before I knew of the cake) to go tomorrow to the store in Oberhausen
August 2, 201212 yr I do have to say that it does look pretty plain for the big 80. Looks like a build a kid could have made at home but at least you get something.
August 2, 201212 yr As a matter of fact, it's already being discussed over in the General Discussion forum... although this is probably the better forum for it, actually. I think it's nifty (of course, freebies inherently are). And welcome to Eurobricks!
August 2, 201212 yr Looks like the Lego Group is celebrating their 80th birthday with a promo Cake set. The set is the usual polybag promo available with a $50 purchase. Slightly off-topic, but the offering seems to vary from country to country: In Scandinavian countries (at least the few I checked), the promotion is a Hulk minifigure in orders exceeding 30 euros or equivalent krone. In Germany it is the cake in orders exceeding 30 euro. Is this something just in the USA then as when I go to the website and change location to UK it no longer appears? It seems that we are not getting anything or will there be something up soon, anyone know? It seems to vary, some countries (including the UK) get The Hulk, others the cake. To see what you get, here are a couple of ways: - On the Shop Home page, select a region and hold mouse over MY BAG and it will tell you what, e.g. for UK: "Spend £25 and get a free, LEGO® Marvel Super Heroes The Hulk™ minifigure!" - The other way is to go to http://shop.lego.com/en-GB/cart/shoppingCart.jsp (or put something in your bag and click MY BAG), where it will tell you the same info on the top of the page. The latter method allows quickly changing regions and seeing how the text changes as the shopping cart page is updated for the region.
August 2, 201212 yr This isn't a set to get excited about, I doubt that was TLGs intentions. Its just like any of their other mini builds-a fun little set. It's just like the watermelon slice from this month, nothing exciting about it, it's a neat little set.
August 4, 201212 yr Author True, this Cake set is nothing to get overly excited about, which is why I'm in no hurry to hit the Lego store for it. I might be passing by that way this weekend, in which case I'll try to stop by for it. Still wish it was some type of minifigure - even if it were some generic figure with "80th" printed on the shirt or something. And I'm still surprised that some regions are getting the Hulk polybag instead.
August 4, 201212 yr Author It is a nice gesture, but I'm going to wait a month for the zombie car promo There's a Zombie Car promo next month? Edit: Nevermind. I should have done a bit of research before asking, as it's posted in the Monster Fighters section. Edited August 4, 201212 yr by Hawkman
August 4, 201212 yr This would be great to commemorate Lego's anniversary. I just can't believe that Lego's been around for 80 years. There have been so many extraordinary Lego sets throughout Lego's time and Lego has inspired so many people over the years like all the dedicated AFOLs here on Eurobricks. Happy Birthday Lego! In Australia, it's still the Hulk Minifigure promo.. Edited August 4, 201212 yr by Ferrik
August 6, 201212 yr Author I recieved the Cake Set with my LOTR/SW puchase today at the Lego store. I was thinking of trying my hand at a review of it, but I don't think there's enough interest in it really. The circular blue plate is cool, though.
August 6, 201212 yr I like the set - heck I got the Lego email about it on the 1st and went to the Lego Store that night to spend $50! I tend to only buy when there is incentive as well. Call it great marketing, but it worked. I didn't open mine either. With exclusives and promos I tend not too. Might one day when I have kids and a few dozen rare sets kicking around. That might be fun! TLG are just trying to get people to spend, and with snazzy little promos like these, it works. Edited August 6, 201212 yr by legomaniac83
