Posted August 3, 201212 yr I have looked around interenet auctions and found some exellent deals for old classics. (Looks like someone needs some money and fast) These include: 8868 Air tech claw rig 8880 Supercar 8865 Testcar 8448 Super street sensation 8458 Silver champion Which one/ones would you recommed buying/bidding? 8868 and 8880 appeal to me the most, but the 8865 is ridiculously cheap.
August 3, 201212 yr You really cannot go wrong with any of these excellent Lego Technic sets. Recommend reading the set reviews on http://www.Brickset.com ; just type in the set number in the top-right box and see what others say about them. Edited August 3, 201212 yr by DLuders
August 3, 201212 yr Wouldn't boter with silver champ. 8448 is good but 8880 is way better. 8868 is just awesome. 8865 was great for it's time, the steering is still better than any of todays "super"cars. Still worth the money if you can find one at a good price. So for me, out of these 5 it's between 8880 and 8868. Both are awesome tho i'de probably lean towards 8868. August 3, 201212 yr Author Yeah I'm leaning towards 8868 and 8880. These will be mostly collectibles but some mods will probably occur. If i'm lucky and nobody else finds these (which is likely, being a small auction site) I might get them both at a decent price. Thanks for the advice!
August 3, 201212 yr I have got the 8868, the 8865 and the 8880. In my opinion the last one is the best but the 8448 has got a gearbox with reverse and the best wheels to build large scale supercars... it is difficult...
August 3, 201212 yr I just picked up a cheap 8448 the other day! (woohoo.. after only 5 years of looking) for the bargain price of AUD$120! It came assembled, but dusty.. so it's been pulled apart for cleaning.. was interesting looking at the design of it! I have a dusty 8880 sitting on the bench behind me, and a 8868 on the shelf next to me... that I'm thinking of finally building the B model for, soon. Not sure if I'll ever get a Silver Champion, as they always go for so much. By all means, buy as much as you can afford.... but do keep your eyes out for an 8480 Shuttle... which is still my favourite old flagship, purely because of the mechanics, and the uniqueness of it (plus it's super fun to play with!) RB
August 3, 201212 yr Here's the easy solution: Buy all of them! If you've got enough cash, buy them all. If not, 8868 and 8880 should be your priorities.
August 3, 201212 yr 8868. You get a lot of useful parts, and this truck was unique in the '90s because of the very clever upper structure rotating, and compressor powered pneumatic.
August 3, 201212 yr I have all of those It depends where you want to go with your Technic building. If you just want to build cars then a car will do. 8865 has the old hard-to-remove black pegs. Otherwise take your pick of the type of car you would like - F1, Ferrari or 4x4. If you want to design complex systems and your interest is primarily in engineering then it's 8868 all the way. 8868 was the father of LEGO pneumatic logic systems. Its second model, the refuse truck, introduced an automatic loop into pneumatics for the first time. From there many automated pneumatic models were created by AFOLs. My whole Brickshelf pneumatics section can testify to that! Strange that TLG has never repeated the pneumatic automation in a set since. It's high time they did. BTW daniele have you tried Brickset for turning set numbers into pictures? Mark

August 3, 201212 yr Check german ebay for international sellers, 8448 and 8868 both regularly go for under 50 euros, havn't been watching the others much. (And I picked up the technic ferrari for 65 the other day, cant wait to rebuild it) Edited August 3, 201212 yr by S.I
August 7, 201212 yr In my eyes you should buy 8880 from your list. I have all of the sets listed and this one is really the best, i think. /Martin
August 10, 201212 yr Maybe I should thank skppo for starting this topic. It was a reminder for myself to check local auctions for technic sets and I believe that we are watching the very same site! Or maybe it was coincidence, but I found those same sets. Since I already own 8868 and 8880 from time before my dark ages, my choice was 8448. With all parts, instruction books, box and even those small boxes inside the large one, 105€ didn't seem like too much for this great looking car. Should look very nice on my shelf along with 8880 and 8070!

I live near Pori.
August 10, 201212 yr Unless it simply has to be a technic set, 8157 Ferrari is a far superior model to Silver Champion.
August 10, 201212 yr 8865 is the only one of the 5 i haven't got. just a bit pre my collecting times from years back.
August 14, 201212 yr Just got my 8448 and... WOW! This really seems like something unique, all those little boxes and instruction books thick as... well, something very thick. Can't wait to get building. On 8/10/2012 at 4:08 PM, skppo said: May I ask what part of the country are you located? I live near Pori. Yes, I live at south coast, in city of Kotka.
August 15, 201212 yr I bought a bulk load of LEGO bricks off eBay the other day, to my surprise there were 4 wheels from 8880. I could not believe my luck when I checked the rest of the hoard to find nearly all the bits needed for the set. Amazing, this set came out in my dark ages and is a really nice set to have, so if you have not got it and you can find a good one, get it. Nice stud based build with a cool 4 speed gearbox, all wheel drive and steer, yes a nice set to add to the list
