Posted August 11, 201212 yr What's the deal with those? I've seen sets on eBay from the 60s and early 70s so complex that they rival modern Lego Technic sets. I've seen beautiful Meccano models at toy-train expos, and invariably they are presented by men in their 60s, who doubtless built this from their collection they've had since they were kids. But whenever I see them in toy shops, they SUCK! They're small, have next to zero mechanisms inside, and include lots of plastic parts. And the variety is awful as well. I know that this probably owes to the fact that the Meccano company has been through a lot of buyouts/hostile takeovers in its history, but still. You'd think that the world's leading METAL based construction toy would put more effort into their products.
August 12, 201212 yr I totally agree, I never owned any Meccano myself but I remember building with friend's sets and creating all sorts of machines with winches, pulleys and cogs. The newer sets just seem somewhat lacking. I do love the new Gears of War sets though, but that's because i'm a sucker for everything Gears .
August 12, 201212 yr What's the deal with those? I've seen sets on eBay from the 60s and early 70s so complex that they rival modern Lego Technic sets. I was way more interested in Erector Sets when I was a kid (70s) than in Lego. Lego really didn't have all that much going in doing interesting builds, or anything mechanical at all. It was just bricks! With Erector, you could build anything you could imagine. I loved tinkering with it and making all kinds of machines. It was ugly as hell, but mechanically AMAZING. From what I've seen in the stores, the situation is now completely reversed. I haven't seen a single Erector Set that appealed to me at all, and Lego - well, do I even have to say?
August 12, 201212 yr Author I just went to meccano.com and they have jumped the Lego/Megabloks/Kre-o bandwagon and got themselves a licensed theme! But.... Tintin? http://www.meccano.com/models/tintin/
August 12, 201212 yr They have also got Gears of War for some strange reason. I'm surprised they aren't on the website yet seeing as how I bought the APC a couple of days ago.
August 12, 201212 yr Author ... as an answer to Megabloks' Halo license! And now just found out they also got a Sonic the Hedgehog license! (No doubt as an answer to K'nex Mario license)
August 13, 201212 yr They still have some set more related to the ones sold in the past, but they're just a little part of the whole Meccano production and very expensive . http://www.meccano.com/models/super-construction-set.html/ Edited August 13, 201212 yr by Plastic Nurak
